I loved the 40man raid days, but I came from old school everquest, where they had 72 man pug raids, with no vent. Was used to it. Agreed with number 1 especially. One of the best personal moments in wow was where I and 4 very good friends of mine spent months--literally months working to achieve the 45 minute baron run in stratholme--and finally winning. We were yelling, cheering, screaming with joy! Dorky I know but we had such a good time--it was amazing to finally pull it off! :)

That shot of the first room in Molten Core before you pull the two giants just reminds me of Saturday mornings. We'd pass out the new lava forged gear made during the week. Groups of classes standing together chatting about technique. I'd forgotten all about class officers, and how we'd have our own channels. As a rogue we'd bitch about hunters wanting our gear, and during the week we rogues banded together to stealth hit DM, BRD, farm FR materials together and put our heads together for ways to sneak past bosses to make an easy loot. With only the one auction house which was in Ironforge it was the gathering place where everyone knew everyone by a few degrees and the infamous told tales and gear was envied.

"Start buffing!" le 4 minutes later "ok we are done buffing the raid now start buffing again!" and of course having a paladin or two stay out of combat so they could rez during a fight lol.

DEAD ON BROTHER!!!! I Sooooo miss 40 mans. It made guilds and guild leaders more receptive to new guys in the level cap since they were always having to keep a huge raid roster available in the guild. People didn't mind dragging you along and teaching you the ropes when you were the newb because you were just one of 40 people, it wasn't such a huge loss. Now days, everyone one just want's 10 people in the guild and if they loose someone, it's a much bigger loss, and if they have to bring someone in, they want them at the level they are already at, which is highly unlikely, and then they have to gear the person up. Then of course when one or two people have an issue with one or two other people, everyone else just sits by and watches the guild fracture. When you do bring in new people to replace those that left, those guys feel like the odd man out because the one's already in the guild have built such a close bond. Huge guilds were awesome, you had more resources to pull from, you had more people play with, so if a few people got on each other's nerves, it wasn't as big a deal. And the best part, nothing, and I mean NOTHING compared to having 40+ of your guildies storming through a zone on their way to a world boss fight. Word spreading like wild fire, the zone's chat lighting up and tons of little noobies chasing after you to watch the fight and just get in on the sheer excitement of the night's events. Man those were the days.

i loved vanilla wow specially nerf fight i was a hunter and my guild never advised of class call, they always used to do that to new people, but they gave me dragonstalker piece i forgot which one it was but it was the best feeling ever, my guild was actually nice and we still are going strong.. 15 core raiders remain now as the others got married or moved with real life.. Ahhh good old days.. i was just lucky i found the right guild and thats what it fell down to.

40-man was so good when I played it with my three roomies back in college. It eventually burned me out (5-7 hours raids twice a week every week), but it was still fun while I could stand it. Staying up til 2am to clear BWL and the first half of AQ then going to iHop. Awesome stuff. Oh, and class chat. The priest channel in our guild wasn't super active but we had some characters in it. Everyone had to get their Benediction or you couldn't sit at the cool kid's table.

Having watched both video's and been in a guild that raided pre-BC. i can say that the epicness of downing bosses with 39 other people was extreme. THe guild i raided with on Kirin Tor on our first night in MC did it in three hours to Rag next night first time we dropped him our tank got gear. From that point on we geared anyone and everyone that wanted to try out raids. THis was due to leveling together in PVP and in dungeons. and spending a week in UBRS taking out the boss just to get used to raiding. i think that this is what the game is missing. Have 10 man then have 25 man then have a 40 man raiding platform. so people learn to work as a team. in our PvPing we almost never lost a match other than AC but when we did win AC it was because we stuck together and made the horde hurt quickly. This being said the game has slowly turned into a Me me me it all about me and how UBER. I am returning to the game having not played since before BC and i have to tell you that i am saddened by the player base here. i love the lore the game and the old ways now this new way feels like a sea of pod people.

I started playing three months before TBC was released and my first character was only in the low 50s by time the expansion came out. Missing 40-man raiding makes me hugely regret not starting to play the game when a friend had asked me to in WoW's first year. Even though I never had the 40-man experience, I still believe that every one of the points Preach makes apply to the transition from 25-man to most raiding guilds being 10-man. None of the 10-man raiding I've done in the past five years comes even close to the great times I had in my 25-man guilds during TBC.

I was really dishearted during the Wow 10 year anniversary. I had a fucking blast doing MC with 40 people. But the bitching that came out of most players that did the event sickened me. The only thing that made it worse was that the event was so short. I kept running MC over and over,even though I already got the 1 drop and the mount,I was going to milk every bit of fun I could out of the event. Best moments of Wod 1-The MC event. 2-The leveling [At least horde,And at least in Frostfire] 3- Nothing!

it was fun, but having a bunch of noobs for it sucked. it was nothing like OG 40 man's, or even the 25 man's of BC. in my opinion BC was better than Vanilla, but that's because I went from casual raider if they needed me in vanilla to being off tank then main tank in BC. plus it's so much harder to get 40 people, especially with the LFR idiots to be a team player instead of just clicking buttons without paying attention to mechanics

Fully agree man! As someone who played in Vanilla and came back during Cata, it really irked me that guild status and what not was gone. I remember the days of looking up to raiders when I was leveling up to 60 back on US-Staghelm. Seeing guilds like Omicron, Heavens Judgement, Attrition, Aion, etc. really inspired me to get into PVE, and luckily I got a taste of it through my old guild (Phoenix). World of Warcraft during vanilla was the pinnacle of my gaming experience, and I really miss it.

Vanilla WoW showed what the epic was supposed to be. 40 people trying to down difficult bosses and only getting a few items, which you had to fight with 10-20 other players to get. I remember when you used to see a 60 raider wearing full epics on their epic mount, everyone would crowd around him inspecting him and treating him like a rock star.

I liked it better in the old days, there was a sense of accomplishment and things felt rewarding. The social side of a 40 man guild was very appealing to me and the friendly battle on the instance general chat of the guilds to see who progresses faster. And you actually knew the names of the other guilds who were on the same level as you. Now nobody even recognizes or remembers guilds that are not the rank 1 on the server.

you're totally right about number 2 . I quit playing wow a LONG time ago (I played for 4 years and it's been 7 years since I quit) but guilds really meant something back in vanilla. I could still name the top 15 guilds on my server from that period, even after all this time. and if I had to pick a moment when WoW started to die for me personally , it would be when our server's top guild transfered onto another server in early TBC, even though I was never a part of the guild and didn't even know the majority of them personally ( I mostly knew the PvPers because of the premades, dueling outside of IF etc.) after that it just felt like a hole was created in the server's community and little by little everything just went through that whole and into oblivion over the course of the next few years, and 90% of what was left was an underpopulated server with some guilds not particularly notable for anything whatsoever.

Preach always knows exactly what I think about WoW today! I wish they would reintroduce 40 man raids in WoD and I wish people would do the guilds they used to. I remember Vanilla WoW, guilds were actually elite groups on the server. Everybody on the realm knew who one guy was because he was the guild leader for a major guild, among other people for similar reasons. The sense of community /etc just made it more enjoyable. I also wish they would get rid of flying mounts in most places. They're faster, sure, but it ruins the massive feel the world had and the exploring bit. I could still tell you walking directions around most of Azeroth just from leveling characters & going to dungeons etc. but it's totally useless now, nobody needs directions to a place when you can just fly a straight line to it.

I was too young to be in a guild for 40 man vanilla raids, but I can say that voice communication added an entirely new depth to the game for 25's. Something about being accepted into the raid group and joining in on the voice call then feeling as if you were part of the team was really something else. Not to mention the fact that hearing a persons voice added a new layer to who the character "blademasterxx" was.

Great video as always Preach. 40 man raiding was one of the best times I had playing WoW in 8 years. I really doubt we will ever see it again in WoW given the direction Blizzard is going and how they rarely state how anything was better before a change. I never really got the privilege to join a 40 man dungeon, but I did go to AV quite often and it was EPIC! I think everyone from the vanilla days, has a story of going into Alterac Valley one day, logging off for the night and going back in the next day to the very same match with very little having changed, it was awesome! If Blizz made AV like that again, personally, I would probably go on more often than buying a gamer card every 8 months or so.

I've been playing on a level 60 server for about the past year now. infact I play in the guild that used to be final exit which you used some of their footage in the video, Daggzor #1. But I enjoy the 40 man raiding far more than the smaller groups of retail now, and the class channels are fantastic. When I try to go back to retail sort of every major patch I attempt LFR but it takes me almost the entire patch to get it done because I just can't be arsed to deal with the LFR groups, especially playing a tank.

40man was tuned for 25-30 people knowing what there doing, the others being shit or afk. So if you did organise 40 really good players the raids were easy, very few mechanics. People back then didn't min-max like they do now, and didn't theorycraft as much, plus some raids you had to wear resist gear. I can remeber getting a set of mp5 gear, or doing healing rotations due to the 5 second rule. Most fun I had was taking people into srat or scholo and learning themthe bosses, being a priest I was always needed.

I totally agree, but also I just think WoW was a bit more innocent and community minded back then. One of the best gaming experiences of my life was a 6 hour stint, repeatedly wiping, but eventually clearing both sides of Stratholme with a really great random PUG - back when it was designed for 10, but we did the complete quest line with 5. You just don't get that now. The community... well... there is no real community now. It's just a bunch of punk kids swearing at each other and grabbing all they can grab

same to me best instance run stuck in my memorry is not firstdown of Ragi/Nef/huru in aq40 (never got past the twins in vanilla) its a 4 man 6+ hours wailing caverns run with a lv 16 schaman as our healer, way to low ;), and me as a 18-20 tank. At some point we had to make a brake so that one of our grp could get his kids ready for shool, we startet around 00:00 and finished with sucsess at aournd 7 am. Several wipes, trashrespawn, lags, manual /rnd, corpseruns from CX but hell today nobody would even consider joining such a group but we had FUN and it was all random no guild. it sadens me when i see grps disband after just one wipe or even after 2 players die. im not saying everithing was better but sure some things were. and 40 man is just more eppic than 25 or even 10

I vividly remember one time during a raid, in molten core, our raid leader had something of a disagreement with his wife and never noticed he still had his headset on, and being the raidleader, his mic was set to be always open upon hearing sound, instead of press to speak for the rest. Suffice to say a 40 man raid chuckled hard as we got to hear the entire conversation. Hilarity ensued after as some we're on the wifes side and some on the RL's side.. You didnt have that in later days with 10 man raids.. Sure there was a thrill when you server first heroic 10 LK by stacking 8 dps instead of 5, but it wasnt the same as clearing naxx or AQ40 the first time. I have no idea how i got on this video or why YT recommended it... But it was a nice blast from the past anyhow.

Ohhh yeah.. I remember the old Class rivalries.. Waay back in vanilla and BC, US warlocks were Always rivalling with THEM mages on who would get the most people in the top 10 DPS list. Even going so far as that we'd had warlock/mage powows where we'd all got together and talked about what we could do as a group to improve our dps, and help out our less effective members on how to be better, so we'd show those damn warlocks without balls ( aka Mages ) what spellslinging was all about.

I remember the 40 man days, especially the warrior chat. I was quite a bad player back then. My spec was odd, my gear also, quests were boring to me. Once I got invited to the guild my clan buddies were playing, I was given lots of advice (in both good mannered aswell as swearword-filled ways ^^) especially about what certain abilities could do besides giving a buff (anyone remembers battle shout generating threat?). The guild got me as far as not needing the odd "wait 5 secs for the tank to grab aggro" rule and I could literally go and grab a drink and come back 1 minute later while tanking Maexxna. I even got rid of my "bad habit" of clicking the action bar. The sweat was real at first, and I never thought that I could be a "great player" with even a reputation on the server I used to play. Guilds from other friends I made throughout vanilla spammed me to have me MT their MC and BWL runs, or even a simple question how to improve their gameplay. Besides, I even got some gold for my precious time, which was greatly appreciated since there was no dual-spec and farming as a tank, even in mostly T3 was just painful. Today, all you get for playing sub-par is a kick from the group.

If Blizzard set up their game like it used to be we could have those social aspects back. I don't just miss 40 mans, I miss guilds that all had to fight the same level of difficulty content. To me it changed the entire atmsophere of the game when they added multiple difficulties. Gamers tend to blame the players for the toxic attitudes, I say it's caused by Blizzards Antisocial approach to MMO's. I really hope Everquest Next gets it right because I don't think Blizzard will ever go back!

I agree with #2 to no ends. I missed all of the 40 man content, but I remember my soul purpose in BC/Wrath was to get geared and knowledgeable enough just so I could APPLY to Renegade Soldiers - Vek'nilash US, and stand a chance at being accepted.

I remember 40 man raiding. It was a freaken great time! However, I also remember being dead for half an hour while people fill the floor with piss waging their dicks around trying to place blame for the wipe instead of getting their heads out of their ass and giving it another go. I loved my Priest and Rogue (my) officer. They were the peace keepers that got people back on track. It's crazy how a class officer's attitude overflows to their underlings. Priest or Rogue was the "best" place to be in the guild for nurturing and less bullshit.

First time I fought Onyxia I remember how awesome it felt to have 40 people going to kill this massive dragon. Then I realized, this is my first raid, my first boss 40 people and we are doing nothing to it, how can we possibly kill this. Remember when you first got to hellfire Peninsula, questing in constant fear of a fel reaver turning up. When I first killed the lich king it was after the nerf and at no point did I think we couldn't win. Wtf this is the main guy in warcraft, the biggest baddest guy out there and it was a huge letdown

Raiding completely died for me in wrath... I joined a guild to try out some raiding 'cause I hadn't raided since Karazhan, but my gear (I played a off-tank DK a the time) wasn't good enough to go with the big boys in the guild. I didn't think much of it at first, then one officer started a "b-team" consisting of alts and those who didn't have time to raid on the regualar raiding schedual, and I got to go and we all had a blast. Did Naxx 10 man, got 3/4 wings in one night. Ofc the officers from the "a-team" was surprised that we managed so well on our first go, so next time 2 of them went along, and ofc they were in charge. We got to Grand Widow Faerlina (second boss of the evening) and things ahdn't gone too smoothly so the officers were annoyed, I off-tanked her adds and suddenly they started dying. turned out a hunter was there for the first time and none had told him what to do. So when we got acrossed to him not to touch the adds we had 2 adds left as she started to berserk. When we had no more adds she still had some life left and we prayed we'd get her before she 'zerked a third time. But she did, so I did what a good off-tank does, I taunt her off the main tank, and by sheer luck I'm dodgeing and parrying for a while. Then BOOM! I'm dead. She turns over to the main tank still in 'zerk mode, and dies. I was the only one to die in that encounter. Did we get praised for a job well done? No we get yelled at for not doing the fight by the fucking wiki says we should've. I nearly rage-quited the guild for that. We didn't raid again. Those to officers killed the joy we had, and the third officer who started the b-team stopped raiding aswell and took a long break from WoW.

Man, I remember having 2 different push-to-talk buttons in teamspeak (or was it ventrilo back then?), one to talk to the other 6 or 7 priests in the priest channel, and the other to talk to the raid. Of course hilarity ensued when pressing the wrong button while talking smash about those damn druids spending innervates on themselves or other stuff. Man, good times.

I loved the 40 player raids. Sure they had their problem but still it just felt so epic. As you killed that boss with 39 other players next to you. While the 10 player raids. I have to ask. Why am I ever here? Also I loved riding around org in my t3 warrior armor. My lock having T2 and a dreadsteed. Having all types of players running up to me. Drooling over my shiny armor. Cheering for me. I truly felt like a champion of the horde. Now I ride into org and just feel like some Average Joe. Even with full epics. It feels pointless and dishearting.

GoodTimeBuddies omfg not this argument again. Look. How about you actually try heroic raiding. Or even normal raiding. I can assure you. When you actually down the last boss of the tier after a week of trying and 5 threats of leaving the guild if people don't shape up it feels pretty fucking special. And that's pretty much true for every difficulty that is not LFR.

@TheEduardo81
@TheEduardo81 11 жыл бұрын
GoodTimeBuddies besides strategy I guess lol. Riiiight. So you must have had tons of Ra-Den kills then. And let's be honest when wasn't like that with gearing when you have the tier on farm. You always got upgrades from one tier from another, or when jumping from one difficulty to the next, but it's not like it ever rained new items a few weeks after the raid was released. But who cares. The video itself says that the reason why 40-man was awesome is the people. The banther. The murloc sounds on vent,. People screaming. Singing Backstreet Boys. Being frustrated they wipe. Dancing in Joy after they get that final boss. And those things still happen. That's why I raid. Not because of an item which I'll replace in a couple of months. Sure it feels good to replace that last normal mode item and be full heroic gear, but at the end of the day, it's the people you raid with that matters.

I never even got to play vanilla and was still lvling during the end of TBC so I missed all 40 mans... but let me say I want them to bring it back. The first time I did a raid was World PVP (For The Horde) and having 40+ yes there were 6-7 other smaller groups that tagged along. My whole entire guild was in on it. I was even bubbling my friend a lvl 37 rogue through Stormwind and it was AMAZING. It was then I wanted to raid only to be upset that it wasn't the same and that was back in wrath. PLEASE blizzard bring 40 mans back!

Ok when I seen the title of this I thought I remember how they use to be hell and thought there was no way you could tell me other wise. Point 3 is where I stop this video and Agree with you. While I prefer less people I do think Normals and Heroics next Expac should scale from 10 to 40man. I love the idea of bring friends and carrying them. There are a lot of friends in my guild who can't raid due to they don't have the skill. Don't get me wrong being a 10man guild and next expac will give some of that benefit, but 40mans should still at least should be an option. I know Blizzard said they don't trust there scaling for that big of a range... well start of with the new normal and slowly learn to balance it for heroic. 20 mythic will make the hards happy still.
