Moved to small town central Kentucky a year ago from Washington state. So much more affordable, peaceful and beautiful. Decided on Danville/Harrodsburg areas (Boyle county) and ended up buying a house in little historic Perryville. Cute, small and extremely safe small town with a highly rated elementary school. Less than half (actually about one third of the cost) than home prices in Washington. Property taxes are so much less too. Friendly people and no more hours sitting in traffic. Highly recommend central Kentucky for a more peaceful and slower pace of life.

Another con (pun intended) is that if I buy your car, I pay taxes. If you buy it back the same day or anytime , you pay taxes again on that same vehicle. Over and over and over that vehicle gets taxed every time it changes hands. Oh heres another one for you. Not sure if other states do this but KY does. Little towns can impose additional taxes on things like fast food. For instance the state tax in KY currently is 6% but is some small towns you will pay at least 9% at the drive through. My thought is if you need more cash flow to run your town , reduce the size of your government first. Dont steal from your citizens.

We moved from CO to KY seven years ago, and we'll never be going back. For a wide range of reasons, from the cost of living to ultra-progressive politics, it was time to move. The weather is a lot milder here than I was expecting. During the winter, I do miss the sun. It always seems to be gloomy, but there are not a lot of super cold, snowy days. On the positive side, the summer isn't too humid or too hot. The fall is simply my favorite time of year here. Kentucky has been a great state in which to raise our family, with very accommodating homeschooling laws. So we actually looked favorably on KY was far as educating our kids. We also got a lot more bang for our buck in KY when it comes to a home. We probably would have spent well over $500k for the same house in CO we got here at an affordable price with a pond to fish on too. By the way, your bookshelf has some great books by Sproul and Piper.

The one thing Kentucky needs to do is copy the state tax structure used in Tennessee. The two states are extremely similar, but most of the differences comes back to Kentucky's historically more restrictive way of operating. There's no reason for a modern society to have something as backward and draconian as a state income tax. That's caveman thinking.

I can tell people this... taxes are actually not that cheap. It depends on the county you live in. Many counties have lot's of regulations and require permits to build or add about anything such as a shed etc. The there are regulations as to where you can out that shed on your property. I know the county I live in close to the OH river if you use an outside of the county builder or contractor they give you crap and fail your inspections a lot. The in county contractors can be even double what you can find outside the county. Everything requires a permit. Also if your thinking solar in the county I live in as well as surrounding counties you can not go off grid. You have to stay connected to the company. Just lot's to consider and research before you buy here..

@@Retetop Usually those are areas way out from any towns way down in KY. Not much level spots to build on either. Straight up and down mountains. Usually to far for water and getting electric will cost you more than affordable and that's even if you can get close enough to hook to it. . LOL But even then you have to be careful and check it out yourself cause they list it that way but when you research it actually has some restrictions.

What this doesn’t tell you… the poverty. Living in a holler with a trailer is the way of life in most of Kentucky unless you live in one of those cities he mentioned. Nobody here goes to the derby because nobody here can really afford it. And just know when you go to the mom and pop shops, those people are still probably making $7.25 an hour. There’s very few selections of entertainment other than bars and wildlife.

As a Kentuckian I think that depends in Large part on your behavior. Northern Kentucky is probably less suspicious of outsiders than Eastern Kentucky. And alot of that comes down to the areas experience with outsider's. Southeast Kentucky has alot of bad experience with outsiders. Still for the most part, if you behave with some decency and not a snob trying to tell everyone what to do do, you have a good chance of getting along alright in most of Kentucky.

I moved from CA almost five years ago and I'm never moving back. KY is beautiful. I lived in Frankfort (Franklin County) for 3-1/2 yrs; now living in Winchester (Clark County). The friendliness of the people can't be beaten. Except for Winter, it's green ALL the time. I've said that KY could be known as the National Park State. KY is very historical in relation to the founding of the country. The air quality is much cleaner than in CA, IMHO. There are decent-paying jobs galore, too. I've told many of my friends in CA that they could sell their home, pay it off, move here and buy at least 50 acres, and build the same size house they sold, and have plenty of money left over. I can find everything here that I had in CA, except the ocean. But I wasn't a big beach-goer, anyway. I moved here after learning of a familial ancestral connection.

I've been living in the high rockies of Colorado for the last 15 years. Beautiful, but as of late it's becoming VERY expensive. But anyway, I've been thinking about moving somewhere a little more slower paced and with more Christian values, but for my biggest concern, I have a question you may be able to answer as a fisherman. I prefer to live in rural areas (a bit of a disadvantage to myself because I'm a chef) and I love being in the forest and go on hikes regularly. I generally try to find trails that don't have a lot of traffic from other people so I can get some solitude and don't have leash restrictions so my dogs can run freely. How often do people encounter venomous snakes in the wild, and if I was hiking in the forests with my dogs off leash a few days a week, how likely are they to eventually get bitten?
