I love all motorcycles, but I prefer Harleys. Here's why...

I love how people bash Harley reliability....I have 40,000 TROUBLE FREE miles on my heritage classic. I plan to put another 40,000 on it, and then rebuild the engine and go even more. Honestly I think that much of the Harley hate is hypocritical; people bashing other people's choice of wheels...sort of like the Ford vs. Chevy pissing match that people get in to. Most of the hate seems to come from the sport bike side...accusing Harley guys of not waving, when in reality it's the sport bike riders that rarely wave (in my own experience) I ride a Harley, not because i'm going through a mid-life crisis, and not because I'm trying to act like some kind of bad ass; I just love the sound, look, and feel of a Harley. And I don't care what anybody else thinks.

40k trouble free miles, sounds like a BMW, then a rebuild, that's where you lost me pal.

The only thing I would add, is the sound. A Harley's sound is unmistakable. I liken it to an old muscle car with a built engine that lopes at idle. Also the heritage. Harley Davidson is an American Company that is 115 years old. For me, there's just no other option. But that's just me.

I like harley motorcycles, Italian motorcycles, Japanese motorcycles, hell i like all motorcycles. Every motorcycle has history and engineering feat. You also mentioned you're a new rider, which means you haven't obsessed with other brands and technology and you don't have experience to even know what works in certain situations. I agree Harley has heritage and a massive following. People like the character, the size, the rumble, and the history. But that's the case with every motorcycle. It's naive to think it's the best. It's the best for YOU. And that's what matters. When getting a motorcycle, it's most important that the buyer wants to get it, simple as that. To support my claim, theres moto guzzi, the oldest euro, big 4 Japanese with the 90s speed wars and technology breaking innovation, there's triumph with triples and pop culture, there's Aprilia with it's finessed rsv4. Motorcycles have a chair for ALL people. Plain and simple, just ride and enjoy life.

Thanks for sharing. I have been riding for 50 years and have owned many bikes. I still have 3 that I ride, My first is a 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim. It is probably my favorite of the three. The other two are Harleys. I don't think I would give any of them up as long as my health let's me continue my love affair with motorcycles. Other than my wife of 44 years I can't say I have I have had anything in my life quite as long. Thanks for sharing and ride safe brother.

I am 79, and my first Harley was a 1942 flat head 45 that I traded some stuff for when I was 14. My current ride is a 99 FXSTC which I love and will probably keep. I love the carbed EVO motor. Just me as I am old school. Drag pipes and all. Harleys have something that no other bikes have and you really can not put a finger on it. A Harley is a Harley and others are just motorcycles.

This just adds value to an already value packed motorcycle. I'm 64 years old, started riding at 15. 20 Japanese bikes, 1 Spanish, 2 Harleys. People say Harley's have a soul. It sounds cliche but guess what, that's the feeling you get going down the road. Like you and it somehow have formed a bond - I know, I know how that sounds. Best thing you can do is wait for the demo day and try a few, see how they fit. I still have my Ultra and it and I are one on the road. I will not be parting with it anytime soon.

You make some good points. I own a dyna Lowrider s myself. I wouldn’t say I’m a topical Harley rider. But I wouldn’t say a Lowrider is a typical Harley. Because it’s fast and the brakes are superb it corners better than most sport bikes because of its low centre of gravity and it’s one of the last full American Milwaukee Harleys. I have no brand loyalty to Harley either. Most Harley s do nothing for me. The only reason I haven’t bought the newer version is because it’s a cheaper version than what I own. Mine keeps going up in value. The new version no one seems to want. You shouldn’t call other manufacturers it’s each person’s choice. If they don’t want to buy Harley it’s probably down to high prices getting less for your money. So they don’t even give them a second look. I also own Ducati’s Hondas Yamahas and kawasaki. But my Harley is my go to bike when the sun is out.

Well, you nailed it all especially the commonality factor. Except for the hard core 1% types and their bad attitudes toward non-club members there is a common core of friendliness and comradeship between Harley riders and those are the points you laid out; the ownership of a Harley, the pride factor of riding a Harley and the feeling a Harley gives you. You say you are new to riding a Harley but given a little time your blood will turn to 50 weight. In past videos I've butted heads with many Jap bike lovers and tried to explain just what you eloquently said. Good job, Art. H-D Forever!

The initial investment, the timing chain tensioner issue, and the excessive wind flow during cold months due to the cold engine prevents me from buying a Harley. Other than that, I'll say it's amazing how smooth the engine is on acceleration. I'm used to a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 VN Classic and jumped on my brother's 2007 Softail custom. The engine smoothness on acceleration was the only impressive thing I noticed. It handled like crap and was uncomfortable compared to my Vulcan. Of course, maybe that's not a good comparison considering the style difference. I would like to try a Road King to see how it rides.

Once you learn to ride and exceed those bad riding habits,you'll find the Harley superior handling. That's why it;s best to learn on a cheaper bike before upgrading. Watch some Ride Like A Pro" videos and you'll see what I mean
@dickjohnson5025
@dickjohnson5025 5 жыл бұрын
Martin Cvitkovich Superior handling? Bahahahahah, that’s a good one. Now, they Dyna’s were the best handling Harley’s, but they discontinued that line. I am a Harley owner, have a Fatboy and I’ve ridden all their models. From the performance perspective handling and power are at the bottom of the cruiser list. They have not kept up with technology. Sure, the M8 motor is a step in the right direction and the newer softails are better handling, but still behind the curve with other modern bikes.

Build quality is a good point. However, I challenge you to find a foreign made bike that even costs $30,000. If you do, I think you will probably find the build quality is just as good as your beloved HD. At that price point, technology of the HD will be far outclassed. Speed wobble, horrible brakes, 5500 rpm redline, 'entry level' bikes that weigh 600lbs, and so on...

i'm a harely owner, but to be honest harley is not the best bike that ever made specifically in terms of advanced tech. but i still own one though, the best bike for you is what you are looking for in riding and what type of experience and joy you are after, i'm 36 years old, average body and ride a road king, can you believe it LOL, i like long rides and i chose a touring from harley for 2 reasons, first the community (huge factor you should consider) and the second reason is that harley is not that fast :D i''m not huge fan of speed and the adrenaline rush, i just like cruising and chilling.
@brettleisy356
@brettleisy356 6 жыл бұрын
so many points wrong in this video. you are soooo buying into brand name. (WARNING LONG POST) 1: Build quality: yes, Harley has great fit and finish (paint, welds) however, they come in #5 on reliability with around a 25% "major issue" in the fist couple years of ownership of a new bike. these are items costing more than 300 dollars to fix. the top spots in reliability (usable quality) are Yamaha, Honda, suzuki, and kawasaki. your comparison on HD to being an iPhone... you realize iPhone is an apple product and their base is not originality but use what others are and program them for only their OS? iPhone is often barely keeping up with the samsung and is usually priced 15-20% higher than their competitors for nothing other than name brand. Harley has made little advancements of their own and refuse to make changes in some areas, they had afaik one bike with water cooling, someone told me there was one other one but they couldn't tell me which one it was... imagine that... another HD sale rep told me they will NEVER do water cooling cause it effects the HD sound... then why was Honda sued for infringement on the "HD" sound when they put out their shadows (which are watercooled btw) you keep referring to plastic and parts on the sport bikes. which I get, but there are GREAT all metal cruisers from those companies too, such as my VTX 1800R. if you want to compare, then compare the same style of bikes to each other. each class has their own uses and attractions to buyers. also HD has a large amount of recalls, some of them related to safety.. there is a reason they call it a "Harley Death Wobble" cause it effects their models at a much higher rate than other brands. 2: Personalization/customization: yes more people make parts for HD... why not they know the owner has money and they will bump their prices on similar products they may have out for other bikes and label it "HD" specific. however, many of the metric bikes can use HD parts when customizing if they so desire to go that route. again, my VTX can use lots of parts from other HD models. fairings, saddlebags, backrests, trunks, stereos. not to mention having their own parts like rake kits, pneumatic pump suspensions, so many options.... I cant think of anything that a Harley can have that a metric cant have of their own or use a HD "specific" part. Again you are using the sport bike comparison, really... they make other classes of bikes too. 3:holding its value: this is my favorite part of discussion. you buy a harley and compared it 10-15-20 years down the road... ok this is perfect, my VTX is 15 years old! so we will use that. 15 years ago the closest comparison HD was in the ballpark of 20,000 USD. the VTX 1800R MSRP was ballpark of 13,000... ok, 15 years later and the HD is going for 6-7 grand the VTX is just shy of 4 grand. but dont jump on that "see see see" boat just yet, lets do some MATH! the HD owner that held onto his bike LOST 13,000 and the VTX owner LOST 9,000... not to mention again... but the higher insurance rates (higher MSRP= higher cost) and also the higher rate of repairs and the higher COST of repairs. a typical service runs around 700-900 bucks, the VTX 350-600... and requires less maintenance services. adding all those things up and the HD will lose you way more. its not the price you get at the end but what you SPENT is the real value. 4: brotherhood: ok yes they have a large group of people specifically centered around the brand name, wearing HD clothing, HD souvenirs. and diverse... to a point, they usually are people in the "well off" category, and they like to show off their money, while not always obvious they scoff at eating at lower end places, talk about their large house, their 3 other vehicles, or their other bikes. I ride with lots of them on a regular bases, and look down their nose at me when I say I cant buy this piece of gear or that piece, or have some extravagant item added onto my bike so I fit in more with their "appearance". its image to them, not brotherhood. the brotherhood USED to exist, yes they were even more elitist back then but it wasn't about wearing HD cloths, or rich man toys. HD wasn't always outrageously priced. higher? a little, but not like it is now. that extra 10-20 grand is buying into a membership without getting the membership card now. would I own one? yes, for the right price, and I am VERY picky about the few of them I would own and use. Given the date you put this out and you mention you have a 2017 and looking for another one fits you into the money to burn category, THAT is why you fit in with them. personally my pick if I could get one would be a Victory. all my runners ups are Hondas (at least in cruiser categories).

First...all motorcycles can be costly to repair every situation is different and every person out there takes care of their motorcycle and maintenances their motorcycle at different intervals and in different ways and let’s not forget those of us out there who beat on the motorcycle and are lazy with our maintenance. Reliability is something that I’m going to say out of 10 at least half meaning a score of five can be controlled by the owner. a motorcycle is a machine like any other and needs to be taken care of basically when you jump on the bike and just go and you never take the time in your garage or before you leave to look at things that leads to bigger problems. Second.... there is no right or wrong reason to purchase any and I do mean any brand name of motorcycle. the simple fact is if more people would stop worrying about what they should buy as opposed to what makes them happy ,and what they want to spend their hard earned money on you might just be a little bit less disappointed in what you have and just learn to appreciate it instead. Third...I’m not saying that there is not any disputable facts about certain motorcycle manufacturers but the simple fact is as consumers we place some pretty crazy expectations on what comes out every year now basically what I think that means is that you need to research the motorcycle that you want carefully. Everybody has different wants and needs when it comes to their riding. Do not and I repeat do not be brand loyal for the simple fact that you get stuck in an endless cycle of disappointment what I’ve learned from motorcycle riding is I change year-to-year whether it’s because my confidence grows or my needs change you need to learn to be flexible it has nothing to do with brand loyalty everything to do with getting the satisfaction out of the motorcycle that you purchase with your hard earned money and being happy when you throw your leg over it. Fourth...... this isn’t high school anymore don’t think that just because you buy a Harley you’re going to be in the club and everybody’s going to high-five you and call you bro. Riding a Harley Davidson is not an instant invitation to popularity nor is it an instant invitation to being cool grow up. Riding a sport bike does not mean that you’re a professional track and/or stunt rider and you should be doing 155 miles an hour down a public street. I don’t care how sporty it is this isn’t a movie it’s real life ride responsibly.! Ride what you like don’t worry about what everyone else has to say about your bike it’s yours who gives a shit about other peoples opinions.

easier? how so, you change something like the radio or the amplifier and you have to have it taken in to a HD specific shop and have it flashed just to use it (certain brands of radios), other bikes you put them in and go. as far as mechanical work, the basics are the same, granted the tech level on HD is lower, doesnt mean the metrics are really that much harder or not harder at all in most cases.
@brettleisy356
@brettleisy356 6 жыл бұрын
ummm, no, you dont, Ive worked on my bike, my nephew works on his, most of our friends do most if not all their own work on their bikes. so stop spreading false information. the only time you have to take a "jap" bike to a shop are the same reasons youd be taking a Harley in. in my case it'd be boring cylinders etc. also, most metric shops are cheaper than harley shops, and Im not talkng just a little. if I am feeling lazy, or I dont have time, I drop mine off at a shop that runs 45 and hour, my step father takes his to a Harley Dealership and its 115 and hour.
@brettleisy356
@brettleisy356 6 жыл бұрын
not sure what bikes you had, the basics are the same, I knew very little last year, and I already know how to do the fork seals, clutch, stators, regulators, tune ups, oil changes, adjusting lifters and checking head spaces, adjusting chains, replacing headlights, signals (swapped out to full LED on the bikes I picked up last year), literally all the same basics unless you are talking some sport bike or goldwing style bike which really are not that hard either. Ive had more "interesting" dilemmas on my stepfathers 2015 ultralow with things requiring a HD tech to deal with. only thing I can think of.. buy metric tools? only "special" tool on any of the bikes is the rear shock spanner to adjust the suspension for load capacity.

I guess the person that make this video did not own any harley bcoz mybe he cant afford it and harley only been his dreambike in his fantasy world.. i dare to bet that he also never been experience in riding any kind of bike... because on my persnsl experience after been riding a lot of types and brand of motorcycle, but one that i disagree and dissapointed me is the harley... where is the things of comfort of riding harley in real life if the suspension and front fork system is super really horrible things with no technology on it.. the cheaper than harley vulcan 1600 efi will serves better on any road situation ... i been riding even only little windy road type but but the harley seems to lose control due to unreliable suspension for that kind of bike weight.... the weight also not relevant to be comfort.. the quality of workmanship and material ? Can u please explain it the defination of quality ?. Why the screw always lost during riding if they use quality material ?.. and why harley cant maintain on highspeed highway cruising time for a long time on hot tropic weather place ?. If do so u can feel that engines power been drop off and if been forcing it u be experienced on overheating jammed engine or piston... why only compared steel of harley with others plastic bike ?. If u want to compare, why not compare about internal engine parts also... i want to see where is that quality parts inside the engines... also why in the world is harley engine displacement is far big compare to other japnese bike but why that engine cant perform anything ? Sadly that on acceleration also is far behind from other bike that has smaller engine.
@brettleisy356

I agree with most your statements even tho it is a little hard to read. but I will answer your question about smaller engines being more "powerful" than the larger engines. the smaller engines you are referring to I am guessing are the sport bikes. sport bikes engine TYPE is completely different, longer stroke of the piston but smaller piston head. they will "wrap" higher, another words they rpm range is much higher, which is more suited to racing style riding, also those bikes are made much lighter to be more agile and have better acceleration performance. the cruisers TYPICALLY have V-Twins, which V-Twins TYPICALLY (not always tho) have a shorter stroke but much larger piston, which will be a lower RPM engine. does not mean you cant have good acceleration from a V-Twin. the sport bikes are more balanced to have more horse power than torque. so will have higher top speeds. the V-Twins will provide you with more Torque. and Torque is what gives your your acceleration. cruisers just weight much more than the sport bikes. its about what style of riding you prefer, cruiser, sport, touring, etc.

Bmw is one of the best if not the best bikes and cars ever made! I know a 76 year old dude who bought a BMW bike from the 50's when he was young and he's son rides it to this day without any trouble and the only things changed on it are the basic parts that became worn down over the years as tires, chain, cogwheels etc. And once it had a full block restoration and it has more than 200.000 km's in it and in quality and reliability BMW is the best bike out there.

Resale value? Try buying a Honda CBX or a BMW R100 or a '69 Triumph Bonneville or a Vintage Ducati, how about a '73 900Z? Used Harley's are all over the place for cheap and getting cheaper. Most have been butchered by the previous owners and can't be sold for market value. It appears handling, braking, acceleration and electronics aren't major priority for you either. I too had Harley's when I started out until I rode my buddy's Gs1000e and discovered what an inferior product a Harley really is and after you've low sided into a car cutting you off because your brakes are shit or overshot an outside lane in a curve scraping your "comfy" foot boards, you'll understand what I mean.

Let's see, I've got a comfortable, fast, good looking bike made out of quality parts, with all the options I could hope for and I made a lot of friends while riding...but It's not a Harley. I don't care what people think or being "excepted" and jump on the bandwagon like so many others have. I don't bow to the Harley gods and spend huge sums of money for upkeep on my bike either. I've been riding over 45 years and can't find a Harley that I like. A Harley to me would be a step down for so many reasons I can't list them all.
@draganm7823

Painter D you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. Harley doesn't cost more to upkeep, it's mostly non Harley owners that say Harley needs lots of repair, because they don't have any ligitamate complaints, only because they don't know, they "jump on the band wagon" as you put it, and trash talk Harley. Basically you are saying that the world's most respected and most renowned custom bike builders use Harley Davidsons because they don't know any better lol, just listen to how idiotic your statement is. I've owned multiple brands, Honda,Yamaha, and finally Harley Davidson. Quality is close on all, except Harley is better due to strength of materials, steel instead of plastic. I say to each his own, ride what you like but just ride man, just ride, and ride safe. Unlike a lot of non Harley owners, I won't trash talk other brands or insult their owners because I know I have the arguably best bike in the world.

I drove a cbr600f4i and a cbr600rr 03, and i drove allot kilometers and i never had complains about comfort. So to me that is complete bs, how about those monkey bars and taking allot of wind? I bet you take allot more drag in the wind with a harley davidson than with any other bike. Lets talk about power vs fuel consumption, it is also crap on a harley davidson, and how about corners? I bet those aftermarket forks and stuff are purely made for the looks and not for improving handling or performance. And whats wrong with plastic fairings? If you crash a harley all ur heavy metal parts will also need replacement if they hit the ground and you can throw them in ur plastic recycle bin then lol. Go on and spread your bullcrap, the only people who will buy them are those who like it for the looks or the ones who are dumb enough to believe the load of bs youre telling in this vid

First of all: I am a Harley-fan myself and own a 2016 LRS (which I love), BUT I have to disagree in 3 of 5 of your reasons. The only ones I agree is resale value and personalization. - Build quality and premium-finish? You're joking, right? The bolts on a Harley look like 5c-bolts from the warehouse; the controls on the handlebars look like cheap plastik (and they are), the footpegs look like 5$-aftermarket-china-stuff. Even the tires are cheap crap without any serious grip-level. Just take a look at a Ducati Diavel (X), if you want to see a cruiser with real premium finish and build-quality. Or take a look at some MV Agustas or Aprilias. You can see, that the engineers LOVED their job, every detail is beautifully made. Or look at something like Yamahas FJR 1300. That thing will survive a nuclear war without a scratch. Rock solid build-quality. Yes, there's plastik, but it's put together very very very well. - Comfort? That'S ridiculous. I've ridden many many bikes for many years and houndreds of thousands of miles and I have to say: Comfort is none of the strong-sides of a Harley. Except for the fat Touring-models. BUT if you take a look at other touring bikes like the BMW R1200RT, K1600GT, Honda GoldWing, Yamaha FJR 1300, etcpp.. Those bikes offer at least the same level of comfort BUT add some extra agility and daily usability to it (~100kg less weight; a reverse-gear, etc.). If you're looking at Dynas, it's hard to find a bike that's less comfy. Even a VFR 800, F 800GT or Tiger Sport 1050 are way more comfortable. And tell me how you get "blown around by the wind" on a bike with a fairing, but don't get blown around by the wind on a bike like your LowRider S with no wind-protection at all? That's just a false argument. - Community... That's a hard one.. I am not a fan of communities that are based on a specific brand in general. There are basically two types of people in the "Harley-community" over here: old, wealthy, arrogant man that want to feel cool again and young(er) hipsters who are just hopping from one bar / coffee-shop / ice cream-shop to another and pretend to be real bikers and mechanics (even though they just threw money at a real mechanic to build the bike). Maybe that depends on the area you live in. idk. I'm not saying that there are no cool people riding Harleys. But those guys usually don't hang around in the "Harley-community". The are not narrowed down to a single brand. They just enjoy bikes in general. Over all, I think you just compare your LRS to a sports bike and call it a day. That's ok. But don't do a video generalizing ALL kinds of motorcycles.

SO, there ARE many non-harleys that are comfortable. There are some that may have great build quality. But i cannot find a single non-harley that has ALL 5 categories covered. No doubt, you give up some things when you get a harley, like pure speed. But speed isn't really that important to me. And I disagree, I think HD are built very well and that there is a huge amount of attention to detail in them. I am not comparing the build quality of a HD to that of a Rolex. I am comparing it to other motorcycles. And I find HD comfortable, compared to most other bikes (most not all). But I appreciate your opinion! And I really appreciate your comment. I love all motorcycles. I just love HD more.

And BTW, being a member of a MOTORCYCLE CLUB isn't cool, it criminal. Oh yea, BTW son, here's a lil FYI, about your shaky claim on American Harley pride,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Technically speaking, Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold in the United States are not actually made here, but assembled here. Harley contracts manufacturing of parts to plants located all over the world, including Germany, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, and Mexico. Those parts are then shipped to Harley factories here.Jul 14, 2014 ;;;;;;;;;;; So um yea, poor lil rich boy who wants to fit in, your money is going to Eurasia. BAM SON! Ya just been schooled.

Top five brainwashing lies is a better name for this video. You have a two cylinder paint shaker and that's it. Harley is black and white TV, and wind up record players and tube radios. They can't build fast bike that can handle or compete or race at the isle of man. Buell had the right idea, Harley is a late model antique, cars went faster every year and wheres Harley? with their tail between their legs and sucking it for bailout money or loans to pay shareholders. Reagan put tariffs on Japan when they were kicking Harleys ass and they still are but that was okay. Now the attention whore failure is moving overseas and it's a different spin. Japan doesn't copy Harley they look and wonder and how people buy a Harley and then they build a better motorcycle. No American cycle has a 6 cylinder like Honda. Polaris should have used a Yamaha V-4', futuristic, and Indian using two cylinders? wow.
