Every time I mention wanting to be a psych nurse I get the start in med surg speech and it’s honestly frustrating. I want to take what other nurses have to say into consideration but I also want to follow my heart! I was one of the only ones in my psych clinical rotation that absolutely loved the floor and the environment. Everyone else was ready to get out of there and I feel like that shows something. This video just gave me confidence to follow my heart! Thank you ❤️

I love this video and your channel! I'm a new grad and I just accepted my first RN job on an inpatient child & adolescent psych unit. I have been passionate about mental health for years and I'm SO excited! I can already hear the voices of nursing friends, former coworkers, instructors, etc. telling me I should do med-surg first, that I'm going to "lose skills," that psych is "too dangerous," etc. etc. However, I know I will love this job, especially because I'm interested in becoming a SANE in the future (and potentially an NP of some sort). Thanks for being so motivating and inspiring!

If communication is 🔑 key I have that so this is a great video and boosted my confidence because like you mentioned you can learn those things again and learn to put in an IV a foley, but communication is with you for life! I am becoming a nurse but was wondering what my specialty should be in, and just like you said and people in the comment section others try to tell you to go med surge or ER etc but I’m not an adrenaline junky I was going to look into nurse like case management or something were it is less like bedside I want to still help people

Agreed! My original plan was be an ED RN, but in my city it’s so hard to get in as a new grad. I ended up loving psych in nursing school, so I decided to go for it. I was bummed not to be an ED nurse, but omg I’m so glad I started in psych! I work at a large city county safety net hospital, so we serve the vulnerable and anyone who walks through the door. We are also the only Level 1 trauma hospital for 5 states. Our pt population is a lot of post suicide attempts with lots of wound care, ortho care, and medical care still to be done when transferred to us. Soooo I get the best of both worlds, being able to continue using my medical skills as a nurse and build up my psych skills. I’m continuing with my dream to be an ED nurse, but I’m always going to take what I’ve learned in psych for the rest of my career no matter where I end up.

I live in Texas. I'm currently a nursing student in my last semester and have mental health clinicals this semester. Where I have done clinicals at I have seen that the RNs are the charge nurses and mainly do the "paperwork & management" on the floor and the LVN/LPN pass medications. I'm interested in it but I have been so used to working on my feet and prefer to be moving around more like in a hospital setting.

I’ve been in psych for the last 5 years as a LPN now I’m a RN and I got talked into going to med surg😩 when I was in my interview the manager said my psych experience is good because it means I probably know how to deal with difficult ppl. She seemed a little impressed by my experience. But also being on the floor for only one month now I see how my experience has helped me. I had a patient one night who told me I was very calm and it was nice because the other nurses made her feel nervous because they weren’t calm. Being on a med surg floor we’re so busy and we don’t always realize how we come off to the patients but they definitely pick up everything

I had a university placement in child and adolescent psychiatry and right away I took to it and knew psych was what I wanted to do. However, upon graduation I couldn’t find a job, so I went into retirement and then went into general rehabilitation which is basically medicine. If you are being told to go medicine first and you already know you hate it, don’t do it. I’m grateful to have learned the skills that I have but what’s the point in wasting your time in a career you don’t want? Not only that, if you do med/surg then psych and stay there, you’ll naturally lose your ability to do those skills ANYWAY. I’m not good at medicine, it’s back breaking and even after 8 months I’m still so slow and I can’t keep up like the other nurses can. Currently searching for a psych position because that’s where my skills lay. Advice from a 1 year post grad BScN

Thank you for this! I just graduated a week ago and I have always loved psych.. No interest whatsoever in running around a hospital floor hanging fluids, pushing meds and no real direct patient care. I believe after Maslow's hierarchy of needs have been met, the mind is a priority. It is essentially where health (good or bad) begins. Quick question.. What's your opinion on combining naturopathic and holistic treatment with psych practice? Once again, thank you so much for what you're doing!!

Hi! I'm in nursing school and will be an RN early 2020. I totally think holistic treatment would add so much to a psych practice. @@sallyjane8274 I worked the last 18 months as a psych RN on an inpatient unit at a hospital. Yes, the LMT is for licensed massage therapist (in FL). Since this post I've pivoted and applied to grad school to be a licensed clinical social worker to be a "talk therapist." I found I was more interested in the counseling aspect than in medicine. Sometimes you got to try something to really know if it's for you or not. Being a RN helped me see that next step for me is to learn to be a counselor. 😁
