1. other nurses will think you're lazy or crazy 2. lack of gratitude from patients 3. emotional stress 4. high burnout 5. may physically get hurt
@prosperthechancelloremeka45862 жыл бұрын
thats what make it so fun, burn out not really, physically hurt again not really, its why you have CPI so if talk goes out the window the action takes over, as for being lazy, lol they can think that but they are usually the ones to run when they see patients act up and call security cos they dont have the mental fortiitude to handle it

I was a psych nurse for 6 months right out of nursing school and I’m still so traumatized by it. I worked in the adult unit and we were so understaff. It would just be me and one other tech in one unit. We were both small girls and had 22 patients. There was riot like everyday. And I knew that I could never hold a grown man down. I know your never suppose to take these situations personally but I was so fearful of my life, I had to quit. If u can not handle hard core confrontation (e.g yelling, getting spit on, getting kicked, getting bit, stopping a fight) this is not the job for you.

I was a residential tech for adolescents in a psychiatric residential facility for years and it's so taxing. But soooo rewarding. Even if I didn't personally make a difference, the fact that the kiddos got to discharge and go home or go to independent living is so amazing. I've been hurt so many times, but I kept going back day in and day out, because these kiddos needed someone to keep showing up for them and teach them how to properly regulate and express their emotions. I'm so interested in going to nursing school to work in psych because of that experience

I'm a psych tech and everything you said is perfectly true. I would add..... dealing with heroin/meth addicts is harrowing... it is paychologically taxing to figure out this drug crisis, and watch young people kill themselves on these drugs. I dole out the most horrific pych meds to young people... they have become useless, non-functioning members of society. Mental health is heavily interwoven with drug addiction in a way that would astound the average citizen who hasn't worked in this field. *Sigh*

It doesn’t help that in a psych facility, we medicate people whenever they’re having a problem. It’s a double edged sword. You want to do it because it helps them with their pain, and it also can help control some very aggressive behaviors. But you also don’t want them to become so dependent on these drugs if you can avoid it.

Have you ever been/witnessed a scary or dangerous situation with a patient? For instance in movies when a patient becomes fixated on a provider and starts stalking them, is that something just of the movies or could this be a real danger?

fortunately I have not been in a situation where they became fixated on me. I have heard of some cases like that but mostly from PMHNP groups.

@carleighrousseau42263 жыл бұрын
I work on an act team and my team is pretty good at making everyone aware if we notice a “fixation” behavior towards one of our teammates. That teammate will then be taken off that assignment for a considerable amount of time. Overall though, it’s never escalated to anything too scary (in terms of fixation)

I understand that there are one thousand over cons for mental health nursing but do you've experience for acute bedside nursing? Please do a comparison!! I doing bedside nursing now and is so f* demanding. Patients can also be aggressive and confused post-op (not everyday) but still happened. I've been doing it for years but what I really hated the most is I felt like a servant. Patients told me to comb my hair, pull my undies up, charge my phone, get me water, etc.

Imagine being the family member providing the care ALONE no team no shift change and you have a family member who has been given 10-14 powerful meds then withdrawn off some given more combinations, try the sheriff, cops, EMT calls and emergency room visits... you don't sleep if they don't, u provide all their care even tho, they are so zombified...they no longer CAN self care, you are treated as non caring if you want them in a safe place, you also want to rest, but you're too busy trying to work while their in short acute revolving door care...sovyou can pay the light bill or but food. The ignorant length of stay dictated by insurance companies compromises my and my loved ones safety, try finding outpatient services, bigger joke, try getting prior dr approvals after the leave hospital without proper medications and left cold turkey on Chlozopine or other anti psychotic med, happens almost everytime because pharmacy can't keep up with all the drug changes these patients go through. Caregivers give 1, 9 or 10 years or even some a lifetime, all without pay or adequate diagnosis, meds or services, then made to feel guilt, your always blamed for not being compliant!!!!!! victim blaming is constant. Its never the bullshit med combinations and total cold turkey over and over...the system is run by these psychiatrists who are nothing but big p pushers....and you want them to bring you flowers and a cake 🎂lmao 🤣 😂 😆 ur kind and have big heart but ur in a broken 💔 system you cannot fight they want lifetime customers not cures and these families are collateral damage so are the NPs, RNs

I am willing to deal with these cons to get experience in psych as an RN to build my resume for grad school applications and to make sure I like it, but i don't know if i would be down for these cons throughout my career, if that's what it means to get my masters in psych NP.
