@@scottinman5788 Look into an LP cleaning system like Spin Clean, or perhaps an ultrasonic cleaning system. I use the KARC-1 from Kirmuss Audio. If the smell is coming from the LP jackets, though, I regret that I don’t have any suggestions that might help, but I wonder if leaving the jackets outdoors in the sun for a day might kill the mildew/mold. I haven’t tried this, but it couldn’t hurt.

How about the best ways to test anti-skating and correct for it. I know that you have the RT85, Jarrett. So do I, and I love mine. Fluance, like most manufacturers say to set the anti-skating dial to the same value as the tracking force, but that’s not necessarily precise enough. I have a couple of old LaserDiscs, and they are perfectly suited for testing ant-skating. They are precisely flat and cannot warp, and have a smooth surface (no physical grooves). When I dropped the needle, I found that the tonearm skated toward the spindle. Observing this, I would move the anti-skating dial while the stylus was on the surface of the LaserDisc, until it remained motionless. That’s how I tuned my RT85 so that the anti-skating force was exact. Had I not done this, and if I had followed the instructions, there would be more pressure from the stylus on the inner wall of each groove, and it might cause more wear or distortion. There are some audiophile TEST LPs that have blank sections for anti-skate testing, but using a LaserDisc allows someone to drop the needle any place on the surface to test the anti-skating force. LaserDiscs can be found in thrift shops and online for under $2 or less. I have a local source that sells them for $5 apiece.

In your situation you can also slightly unscrew one of the screws on the back of your receiver and slide the ground wire in there before tightening. Slightly better option than taping.

If your receiver doesn't have a grounding post you can always loosen a screw on it's cover and use it instead. Any metal cover on a receiver will be grounded, so any screw attaching it will also be grounded too. Taping it isn't a good idea, because if it loosens or contact is intermittent it could cause a grounding hum, which can blow speaker drivers if it occurs at a high enough volume level.

Actually, the original product specifications of a vinyl record were put at withstanding up to 8 grams. I'd say that if your tracking force is over 5 grams, your records will wear out faster (speaking from experience and research). But not be "carved up", more like your surface noise will very slowly increase.

Well LP records were designed to withstand 6 grams. Yes they will wear down your records faster the heavier the tracking force is, but people exaggerate with this a lot. I have a teac lpr550 player at my summer home which tracks at 5.0 grams and i have played some records with it over 40 times and they still sound great. It also depends on your stylus a lot, i ordered a LP Gear Cerapreme Blue stylus for it which is a great stylus.

I recently hooked up my Technics SL-DB35 to my Yamaha RX-V663. Since the needle on the TT was missing, I replaced the cartridge with a Realistic-Shure RXT6. I also had to order the ground cable and the belt. Now I am waiting for the pre-amp to be able to have the system running the way it should, given that the Yamaha receiver does not have phono inputs. I also have many records that range from the '50s to the '80s, and when played, you cannot hear any crack or pop on them (yes, I take very good care of them LPs). Great video!

I recently purchased a new preamp which I am now very happy with, however grounding the thing was a chore. I have never had any problems grounding my turntable but this one was a bugger. Eventually by pure chance I grounded myself between the chassis of my receiver and the ground on the preamp, I noticed the hum lessened. To remove it completely I have the ground wire from the turtable to the preamp ground and a separate wire running from the ground to a screw on the receiver - which is a little annoying.

Well....I have a Thorens 295 MK IV that I bought in 2009. About 3 years ago, the motor starting making a loud buzzing noise when I'd reach the next to the last track of side two. Sometimes it would start earlier, but it would usually always start in about the same place at the same time. After being away from my turntable for over a year, I finally got it hooked back up and yes....the noise continues. However, just today, the noise came on real early (on my copy of "His Band And The Street Choir" by Van Morrison) and then died out. When I stopped the record and then tried to start the turntable back up, the platter wouldn't move. I had to spin it to get it to start rotating! But that's not the weirdest thing. When I went to go play another record....the platter started spinning BACKWARD! And it's still doing it. I'm thinking some type of sensor is screwed up inside.

Volume too low ?? It should be mentioned that one's preamp (regardless of where it is) should be matched for the output of the cartridge. Everything could be properly set up, but should the cartridge have too low an output signal for the preamp being used you'll never get enough volume. Many higher end cartridges require preamps with 60+ dB of gain in order to sound good. So if you're looking to get a nice high end cartridge one day (many put out only ~ 0.4 mV) it's important to check and see if your preamp is up to it.

So when I increase the volume as soon as it gets a certain level a high pitch sounds start coming out of the speakers as if it has something to do with the tonearm. I plugged in other devices to the speakers to see if it was just the speakers but no dice. It only demonstrates that sound when playing the record player.

You can not apply a specific tracking force for every cartridge such as you mention in your video if it is more than 3.5 grams it is too heavy. Different cartridge and stylus configurations have different tracking force recommendations by the manufacturer. I have used Shure M44-C cartridges for decades and the tracking spec is 3 to 5 Grams. I track at 4 grams with no ill effect to the same records I have been playing for decades ! I also have some Ortofon cartridges with a tracking force spec of 1.5 to 3 grams. These do not play well on many of my older records that do show signs of wear. A 4 gram tracking pressure will NOT damage or destroy records as you imply on your video provided that the manufacturers spec is adhered to and the stylus is properly alligned and in good condition.

A problem I personally encounter is the cracks and pops on vinyl, but not for the reasons you pointed out. Usually some vinyl that are brand spanking new from the factory, for some reason from the get-go upon playing it sound very (or occasionally) crack and poppy, and there are not scratches either, even upon properly cleaning them, even upon using an anti-static brush, those weird sounds didn't go away. From what I heard I think they're called "Dimples".

Low volume can also be caused by a mismatch between the gain in the phono preamp and the output of the cartridge. For example, even if your cartridge puts out 5 millivolts, if you pre only has 36 dB of gain, you will only get 315 millivolts of output. Many line-level devices like a CD players put out 800 or 900 millivolts of output, which will make make you analogue sound quiet. So you should always buy a phono pre with the right gain for the cartridge you are going to be using. Don't try to use a high-output moving coil with a moving-magnet phono stage, which is something I have seen many many beginners try. Even if there is enough output, the 47 kOhm load is completely wrong for an MC.
@thecarman36935 жыл бұрын
Correct. Moving coil cartridges have much less moving mass than moving magnet ones and therefore need more damping on the cantilever, otherwise it can over vibrate. 500 to ~1000 ohms of damping (vs. 47,000) is more to their liking.

Hello Vinyl Eyezz! I posted this question in your "Answering ALL Record Player Questions in One HUGE Video" video but it now seems more appropriate here. So here goes again... I've got a Pro-Ject debut Carbon turntable that I purchased new, so it was all set-up straight outta the box. I've got the anti-skid weight set in the proper groove and the tracking force at Pro-Ject's stated 1.8 grams. I've replaced the original felt mat with an acrylic one from Hudson Hi-Fi and use a 280 gram "50Hz" clamp from ViBorg. The tonearm as well as the turntable itself are level and my records are all clean & well maintained (prized actually). Still, I'm experiencing instances of the needle jumping out of the groove. It doesn't "skate" across the record. It more like "bounces" out then falls back in. There's nothing going on that would make this happen (no large trucks driving by, no cats jumping on the player, etc.) yet this is happening. What could I be missing? Song of the Day: Destroying Angels by Garbage Oh, and thanks for the videos!!!
@byronmacdowell37325 жыл бұрын
@UCbl4Lud6aCIli-dB3YrHlmw Thanks. I'm gonna try that. Do I also have to bump up the anti-skate weight to match? The Pro-Ject doesn't have a typical dial that I can infinitely adjust to dial-in. It just has three notches where you attach the weight. I believe they set for 1g, 1.5g & 2g.
