I picked a hell of a week to reach Genbu for the first time ever. :D This is a first rate video, I will not lie. And certain parts felt like miniature lessons than just a simple "top 5" vid. I found myself listening and nodding away to the match analysis examples and the concepts being explained in them. Happy to find that some things I have been doing/thinking about in games, though others not. I really suck with throw breaks and responding to strings correctly however. Gotten as far as I have by just playing the game, but now I'm struggling and I need to start labbing characters, and practicing specific things if I want to improve further. Thanks for the video!

Throw breaking also comes with matchup experience. Once you have eaten enough shining wizards, you start to see them coming and having reads. Same goes with throws that do things like start wall combos or do anything special. You might want to be aware of the overall situation to be prepared for a possible throw.
@PeterYMao4 жыл бұрын
This is true. Sometimes you just get a feeling.
@disruptor65504 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally agree. One example is King's ground throws after certain wall combos. At some point you don't even break them on reaction anymore. You just anticipate them and spam the break button in advance.
@maskidle4 жыл бұрын
this is true I can vouch for this. Sometimes u don’t even realize you’re breaking throws and you’re just like “oh that’s a shining wizard” It must because I’ve eaten lots of those already back in the days that I just got used to it I guess. You just get the feeling 😹

Definitely struggling with throw countering and common strings. But I use ranked as my practice mode so the learning is bloody and painful, but hey, I at least learn fast enough to maintain my red rank. I do struggle with throw breaking a lot and I'm extremely lazy to hit the practice mode, so I tried to do the next best thing. When I see a throw I try to break the most dangerous option disregarding the animation I see, because I'm a slowpoke. So for example if my back is to the wall and Kazumi tries to throw me I always try to break with 1+2 as it poses the most threat at the moment.

This is interesting to show the polarities between 2d and 3d fighters. In 2d fighters it's usually newer players are moving around too much with big movements and they have to learn to stay still or create smaller, micro movements. In 3d fighters because the space you fight is much more enclosed, side walking is your vertical movement and the movement is more manual, newer players usually are really stiff and have to learn to create bigger movements.
@PeterYMao4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's an interesting point to bring up the difference between 2D and 3D fighters. I mean based on the stages you can mostly tell that movement will be key for 3D fighters at least the ability to create space. Thanks for the comment my dude!

Great Vid! for those who still struggle with throw breaks (this requires match up knowledge) get use to character typical throws. for example akuma only has generic throws, meaning you don't have to watch out for command throws (you can always react with 1 or 2 as it doesn't matter), or throw patterns like armor king, mostly using Giant swing (1 break) after 2 1 on block.

it is very difficult to break command throws online. I break throws based on the habit of my opponent. For hwoarang, just hit 2 to escape his most damage and follow up throw. For Paul, hit 1+2 if the stage has floor break or 1 when Paul is near the wall. For King, just hit 1 to avoid most of King most damage throws.

Great video, and great content in general. You got a new subscriber. However, given the footage, red rankers play differently in my region. I'm in the purple ranks here. Anyone beyond that is extremely rare because we have no one to play against. So, I mostly play against people below my rank, and I only rank up nowadays by farming them. From reds, I expect strong 3d movement in general, strong backdashing, consistent block punishment and decent throw breaking. I really hope the new update will allow me to play against people from other regions, as I really want to see whether I am truly a purple according to the general expectations.

I think there is rank inflation, but what happens is that more people these days are playing Tekken than ever before, the netcode in T7 is better than TTT2 so more people are interested in trying the game, and as a result a lot of people gloss over the basics and skip to for lack of a better word... "winning" as their metric. Or you could say they get caught up in ranked and climbing. I try to bring players back to basics and improving on fundamentals.

I've been trying to do a kbd for years and I *still* can't do it. The best I've got is that back dash, mini side step thing which helps, but obviously isn't the same. The fact I still can't do something that "easy" despite all the practice drives me nuts. Side switching does bug me a little because I can't do Kazumi's "Laser Scraper" facing the left and I sometimes do the wrong diagonal motion. Though I really shouldn't be watching this video, because according to season 4, I'm a Vanquisher again. Really thought my Genbu would be safe...

I play on a stick. It helped me a lot to practice just 1 KBD when waiting for games. 1KBD and then dash forward or a whiff punish move and then another KBD. It's ok if it looks very clunky or slow motion it doesn't matter. Once I was able to do 1 smoothly turning it into several was just a matter of time. Mistake that I was often making was that I was trying to do them fast and the stick was not going back to neutral. Try implementing KBD in games. Place it somewhere on purpose. Plan to KBD after an attack or something. Make sure your muscles are relaxed when practicing. This is super important. Your arm/shoulder should be relaxed when playing and so on. If you're tense your are handicapping yourself. Make sure that you practice the technique when your arm is relaxed. If you will teach yourself to do it with a tense arm you're wasting your time. Once you got it down on one side go through the same process on the other side. Best video I have seen about it was done by Speedkicks and Anakin.

I think three most common mistakes that people are stuck in red and purple ranks are 1) match-up knowledge 2) stage knowledge, and 3) predictable. Match-up knowledge is to know your opponent string and plus frame setup. They will abuse you if you don't know how to punish their moves. Stage knowledge is to estimate the range of your combos so you can maximize the damage and bring your opponent to wall. Last thing is do not be predictable. In conclusion, everything comes down to how much time u dedicate for this game. The more time you spend, the more instinct you gain and know what to do to deal with particular situation.
@PeterYMao4 жыл бұрын
Match-up knowledge is not enough. Knowing is only part of the battle. The other half of the battle is practicing it and getting it down into muscle memory. Some of the punishes have to be practiced to the point where it is almost instinct.

This is honestly blue ranked advice. People still cant break throws. I get it against Kings and Marduk, maybe Julia and one or two throws here and there but blue ranks can't escape throws. Blue ranks also play 2d. They still aint SSing and have no wall awareness. They stay linear vs Bryan when they're one SS away from taking his back or SS launcher. Anna and Nina players are still spamming low highs and im ducking every single one of them. Same with Asuka. You can tell they panic afterwards cuz they just start walking backwards lmao i love baiting out Jins quick strings led with his left hand. Always take his back when he tries to fight bach against my own pressure. They over commit, lead with a quick left hand and commit to a string. Yes, i know this video is old but very true for blue ranks as well except for maybe the player side. I've never noticed that at blue ranks.

Honestly sometimes... These red rank players are disappointing, ive went up against a lot of them on my smurf account and geeeeezuz almost all of them rely on cheesy flowcharts, and when they get figured, they dont know what to do or just rage quit

Sometimes it do be like that. Other times you run into a good red rank player, and you realize he's just missing match up knowledge.

If these are the common mistakes of red ranks, then all the fellow green ranks I play against are secret TGPs. Perfect side step launch punishing, whiff punishing, every-throw-breaking, max damage combo TGPs.

I don’t know your friends you play against so I can’t say. Haha if a green rank is doing all the things you say, then they very well could be a Smurf

I think a lot of people don't understand throw breaking due to still developing an understanding of netcode and the timing as well as Tekken's unique tech system. I was very bad at throw teching. Coming from 2D fighters I just always assumed you tech by just hitting any form of grab button. With Tekken this isn't the case. If someone does a 1+2 grab, which is generally the most overused throw due to people not knowing how to tech it, YOU HAVE to input 1+2 to tech the throw. This is not the same however for 1+3 or 2+4 throws. To tech those, respectively is 1 for 1+2 and 2 for 2+4 (side swap throw). Also assume most of King's throws are going to be a 2 break initially. If you fail to break it initially, mash 1. It's not the best approach to King but it is what works for me until I learn what throws the King player is generally using.
@PeterYMao4 жыл бұрын
If you press 2 initially and then 1 the game only registers one of those inputs on the initial throws. Whichever was pressed 1st is what the game reads. So that will be the input the game reads. You can not get both inputs, nor can you option select the throws.
@RealBrysae4 жыл бұрын
@@PeterYMao Right his chain throws is more what I was gearing towards when I said if the 2 doesn't break that initial grab, generally speaking mashing 1 will get you out. Like the death roll I believe. 😁
