In addition to the Ghost or Glycerin, I'd recommend the Novablast, Adizero SL2, and Velocity Nitro. For a beginner, with one shoe, durability is important and those are versatile, too.

I have been running with the Asics Gel Nimbus 26 for a while now and love my shoes!!!!! Taking this into consideration, what would you suggest as a race shoe please?

I also run in the Nimbus for training runs. For faster runs and races I love running in the Superblast 2. I've tried other speed/racing shoes from Asics but they didnt feel as stable or comfortable as the Superblast for longer distances.

I heard that the Clifton 10 will have a 8mm drop which is totally different from the Clifton 9 which is a 5mm drop.

My picks would be: Ghost 16, Adidas Supernova Rise, Puma Velocity Nitro 3, Asics Gel-Cumulus 26, Nike Vomero 17, New Balance 860 V14 or 880 V14, Saucony Ride 17 and yes maybe the Tempus 2 . Why shouldn't a beginner want run a bit faster a times?
