Matthew -Thank you for this information - I am going to refill all of my reels before fishing next year and you have covered all of the questions I was thinking about. Best wishes and kind regards Clay.

i’m surprised (shocked even) by your recommendation to change mono 3-4 times a year. I fish 0.30mm line regularly for carp here in the US and haven’t changed some of it for more than 5 years. I thought it ages quickly but i see no difference when i test it. I can also say that i’ve never had a problem with the line breaking while fighting a fish. Instead of throwing away good line, I’d recommend people test their line before deciding whether to replace it.

It all depends where you are fishing, how often and whether the line is picking up damage through use due to touching weed or gravel or rocks. I guess the fishing I do always damages my line so I have to change it frequently. Although I can cut off the damage, I have to replace it because the spool is under filled. You’re right, it’s essential to inspect and test your line to make sure it’s up to the job 👍

i really like your technical videos, always something new or something i forgot. i personally like to use my distance sticks for respooling. i take of around 240m of line by counting the wraps, so a 1000m spool is good for 4 spools. i fish only 2 rods and just cast them, thats enough line. with backing line i tend to like finer diameters like 0.30, because its a better linelay. if you starting all wobbly to begin with its not good.

Hi mate, that's interesting... I've never thought about using thin line as backing line, but as you say, fine line spools tighter and neater, so that's a good idea, thanks 👍

Today i have changed line on marker and spod rod. Used calcline app because reels have big line capacity. Problem is that mono line that is under the braid is thicker than it says to be. So little less turns for mono and for braid than it shoud be according to app and reels are completely full to the ege of the lip (maybe even more on spod rod). Hopefully this thrick with splashing the braid before casting will help to avoid windknots

I always check my line and strip off any damaged line, only changing the line when it's so low on the spool it affects casting distance.

Beste matthew welke hoofdlijn zou u aanraden ik zoek een hoofdlijn met zo weinig mogelijk rek erin alvast bedankt

Hi there, if you don't want any stretch, you need to use a braided mainline, I use the 40lb Nash highline on the river, it's a neutral buoyancy braid.

I watched in a previous vid of yours about spooling where you mentioned not soaking mono overnight as it can crack the plastic spool it’s loaded on - for anyone who has watched that video and then this one, could you go into your change of mind on this? This isn’t a dig it is more to do with explaining the variables to consider in spooling
@matthewcollinsanglerАй бұрын
Hmm I’ll try! Soaking is ideal but if you leave it too long it can crack the spool. If I’m pushed for time (which I usually am), I just chuck the spool in a bucket and load it up and it’s fine. The bottom line is don’t get hung up about it as it doesn't matter that much but over soaking can create a real headache.

I've used the same line for 3 years, but to change 3 times a year, is over the top. I will just reverse the line I have on.

It all depends where I'm fishing, how often and whether the line is picking up damage from weed or gravel or rocks. That's the fishing I do so I replace more often because of that.
