The most basic zone. Blizzard made everything here extra easy since its most likely the most played through zone. But nothing interesting happens, and all the quests are standard and boring. Which makes it quick to level through. The zone looks neat though, no complaints on that front.

pretty neat zone, I almost gave it full marks in looks because its very unique. But I personally dont care for it very much. The quests are pretty varied, but not very good on a whole, and the lore is mediocre.

Tied with DK in total score. But DK's have a better lore score so it made the list and DH did not. The lore is neat for the first half, and very mediocre for the 2nd. The quests are varied but not super great. And it looks good enough.

Mulgore is the reason I'm a longlife Tauren. It's just ... beautiful. Yes, questing sucks, and mobs are so scarce that some quests take forever to complete, but sometimes I just sat on top of Thunder Bluff and watch the sunrise, or the night stars. Cataclysm destroyed The Barrens for me though (literally and figuratively).

I will ignore that fail with Undead, so Worgen's starting zone won and I am happy about that. Lorewise it's 5/5, according to your own rules. You would know why, if you would actually finnish the zone, as you would see that storyline there ends not with convincing people you are a good worgen, but with a huge fight for Gilneas city against Sylvanas, creating the whole Genn x Sylvanas hatered and blowing up the Horde's zeppelin. Now imagine, if Eversong Woods had the same update as other vanilla zones went through. That would be epic.

Ok, I understand you have a hard on fetish for Lillian Voss, and her story is fun and interesting, but with the rest of the quests in the zone, being bland and boring the real score for lore unweighted for your fetish is only a three out of five. Also the worst zone in the game for questing beyond LV so fun is really a 1/5. looks like any other place the craptastic undead have infected so 1/5. This puts the real value into perspective and shows just how much you really spend too much time thinking Lillian Voss is the bee's knees. Fun and interesting character in the dungeons yes, but not enough to save an entire zone from crappiness. 5/13 making it one of the worst in reality. This is my opinion as your list is yours.

I completely agree with you, sure Lilian Voss is an interesting character but it's not like she's the best character in WoW or anything, definitely not the kind of character that can save a bland zone (both in terms of looks and quests - I can't say much about lore as I don't know too much regarding that part of the area). The likes of Tyrion, Darion, and the obviously the Lich King are hands down cooler characters to quest for and with. And isn't the undead zone just a bunch of Scarlet Crusade quests? How is that any different than the theme of the DK questline? And how is it better? Because one semi interesting character shows up from time to time? Yeah no thanks... I'd rather fly an undead dragon and raid lights hope again. I know I focused on the comparisons to the DK starting zone but in truth I could argue these points for every zone on this list (eg. Voljin > Lilian Voss / Genn Graymane and Crowley > Lilian Voss, etc.) and for a handful of other starting zones throughout the game.

i absolutely agree with #1. i'm an alliance player, but i absolutely love the forsaken questing, aesthetics and storyline. even more so, i loved the quests where you go head to head with worgen under sylvanas in silverpine forest. the undead story is really well thought out, esp when garrosh cusses out sylvanas when she shows him her way of creating more undead for the horde. undead and their queen being shunned by the warchief for just trying to remain alive. i'm all velen, but sylvanas just gives out big phylosophical questions about existence and it makes leveling undead amazing

No offense, but it was hard to take your thoughts on the Undead Zone fairly. You had a huge bias, and while it is true that this is a personal thoughts type of list, it still makes me wonder how much your personal bias effected the listing. Was this list made simply to talk more about Lillian Voss, or was it simply a consequence of this list? While I won't be so callous as to demand a retrial, as I don't think it'd change the outcome, it would be nice to know how much bias was put into this in regards to the Undead zone

Which is fair, I wouldn't ever think to call your opinion on the character bad, even if I personally dislike the character; if she were universally hated, they'd of left her dead back in Scholomance. I dunno, I personally don't see the hype around the character, with her powers being as vague as they are, they come off as borderline mary sue, and it feels like she's being set up as a character that'll replace Sylvanas, but then either just axe the entire Forsaken, or remove everything that makes the faction unique amongst the Horde. I'd like her better as her own entity

Oh I getcha, you have valid complaints about her character. Shes luckily a fan favorite character as well as a personal favorite, so I doubt to many people will be surprised to see thats shes a big reason the undead starting zone is high on the list. Also, Lillian isnt part of the Forsaken as far as I know. She does just kinda do her own thing.

My favorite zone would be night elfs. I'm not going to be judging it based on lore or anything, its just so beautiful and the music is amazing I sometimes just never want to leave the place. Plus, the first character I ever made was a night elf so that zone has a very special place in my heart. As you said about if WoW ever died, I would sit in the Nelf starting zone until servers shut down. :)

Hiruma, after Godfrey throws himself off the cliff in the Worgen starting zone, he and the two men you assassinate in that stealth mission end up getting raised by Sylvanas and are a major part of the questline in Silverpine for the undead, before becoming the bosses of Shadowfang keep. I really think that should have tipped the lore for the worgen zone to 5/5

I value good quests over Lore because almost no one actually reads the quests and think of the lore, they just do they quests as fast as possible and think if the quests are fun and how fast you can do it. Some places, like the Worgeg starting zone and the Goblin one takes forever, while some, like Human and Night elf goes really fast

I remember when the goblin starting zone was first put in, trade prince Gallywatz resembled a regular goblin but a couple of years later they fattened him up. A few months back I rolled a new goblin and in the starting zone noticed that he was fattened up there as well. It's possible too that some of the quests from back then were removed as has happened in all the starting zones over the years. When Cata first came out, you were already marked as having done 14 quests, now if you start a level one alt you're listed as having already done 35 quests. Also back then with both goblins and worgen you did 110 quests by the time you finished the zone, unless you did the shortcut that got you out of the worgen zone at level 1. (there's a couple of youtube vids that show this trick.

One problem with Gilneas, the Battle for Gilneas bug. You go all the way round to the end of the quest only for it to freeze and you be portaled out. 10 years later its still broken!

mulgore will always be my favorite starting area just because of all the time I spent there on my first toon. the vanilla music in that zone is still stuck in my head. so calming yet theres so much adventure! new things you dont get to see in other places, like kodos which vastly outlevel the zone, and although they are passive if you attack a calf the whole group will attack you. i remember finally killing one and was so disappointed when it only dropped some kodo meat.

I could never choose a favorite myself, but the first one that comes to mind would be the blood elf starting zone. pretty much because Blood elves were pretty much the only race I played back when I started playing in cata, and I've done the zone a couple dozen times at least by now. its mostly just nostalgic for me and I have good memories from hanging out in that zone all the time with my friends 😛😛

Tbh, I never really liked Tirisfal all that much. Sure, Undead are my 3rd favourite Horde race and Lilian Voss questchain is cool, but I really don't like the way the zone looks (it gets repetitive and tiring after the first few minutes) and most of the quests were way too standard.

I'm kind of surprised to find myself in agreement for what you picked for the top five, though I would have ordered them differently based on my own experiences. I would have placed them (from least to greatest): Goblin, Troll, Death Knight, Undead, Worgen. I also think repeat-ability could have been a contributing factor (because who honestly doesn't have alts?), though not a large one or Pandaren would knock Goblins off the list for me. For those that didn't make the list, I have some disagreements, but can understand why you ranked them as you did. Personally, I found the Human and Orc starting zones to be the worst, with Orcs ranking higher than Humans only because the Orc's, aesthetically and lore-wise, is more interesting (plentiful but standard forest versus sparse and harsh canyon/desert).

5 - this is probably my favorite - only one or two could contest it in my mind(belf and DH) 4 - i only played through this once, and it wasn't memorable at all to me. i vaguely recall something about a naga in this section, but not much else. so that should give some indication of my thoughts on it... 3 - i don't like goblins anyway, so this already had a strike against it from the start - some of the quests were neat, but there are a fair number of crappy ones, and it comes back around to i just REALLY don't like goblins(they are a half-step up from gnomes, easily my most hated race. because gnomes can just hide in your tauren buddy and stab you without being targetable in vanilla...)personally, i don' t think this should have gotten full quest marks- at best 3, i just didn't enjoy most of them. i wasn't trying to power level, i just didn't enjoy them. 2 - i can give you this one, i am like you - i am a horde player - and it still was worth playing through. lore wise i actually think this should have taken a 5/5, you interact with several lore-important characters(similar to the DK zone, which recieved full marks). quest wise, i think maybe 4/5, alot of the context was interesting. hold on, now i'm confused - flags the DK zone for human architecture, but doesn't flag gilneas(which is a recolor of the same architecture, might i add) on the same thing. i didn't find the aesthetic to be all that good, and the DK zone easily eclipses it to me(especially with how it changes as the player progresses) 1 - i haven't actually played this one since cata dropped.

Having played both Alliance and Horde. I still like pre-cataclysm Elwyn Forrest the best. Second would probably be Undead starting zone and Third would be Death Knight. I really like those quests. The others are ok. The night elf starting zone makes me sleepy. lol My favorite music in a zone is Wintergrasp. I think TBC Nagrand is a cool zone too.

The DH startig Zone tied with DK. I really like how the DH starting zone is actually a suicide mission that Illidan sends you along with all the other DH to do. You also get to make a few choices during questing which in my opinion made it more fun.

Northshire abbey isn't exactly a thrilling zone, it's miniscule, Night elves have the really annoying running quests for the moonwells, dwarves have some better stuff, but nothing very big and lore related, and gnomes have a pretty good starting area, but gnomeregan becomes irrelevant after that since it never actually gets retaken

Maybe its just me but i always liked the dwarf and gnome starting zones. Yeah nothing major happens lore wise and the quests dont really vary but the zone itself is pretty and gives me a sense of nostalgia. Also im not a big fan of unique quests in starting zones cause i lile to hit 20 asap to get mounts and choose where i wanna quest next so the dwarf starting zone is perfect for that. I main an undead and agree its a great zone but really the quests arent the best tho i do agree lore wise its amazing now with sylvanas and aesthetically I'd give it a 1/3 im not a fan of dark zones.

I'd rank three of these as some of the _worst_ starting zones (though none of them is as bad as Pandaland), because they have no replay value. If you're going to make a second character of the same race, you want your levelling experience to be at least slightly different. The Goblin and Worgen zones force you to go through exactly the same huge quest chain (well, there's maybe 2 quests that change slightly, in a sequence of 60+). And the Troll starting zone just just bland. The DK zone also gets repetitive, but people are less likely to make multiple DKs than they are to make multiple characters of the same race with different classes.

Having just played the DK starting zone, I can attest to how annoying the torture quest is. I heard on another video that it's a Los chance because of the old hit leveling or something? Having to hit the crusaders so many times helped you level you weapon skill I think.

tbh i think worgen's should've gotten a better lore rating (yes I'm aware its high but the way it was rated is eh) yeah during the middle it gets a little boring but it's also a really long starter quest chain so not everything is going to be eventful. + the lore doesn't have to do with how fun the quest itself is rather than it's relevance to the story. Some super important characters like sylvanas and king greymane are involved and not only that but the story of gilnaes isn't even over yet which is kinda weird to think about. I'm also very biased towards worgen because yk its a really cool zone with super pretty designs and a good story

Lillian Voss is a great character. Unfortunately I have to give best starting zone to the Demon Hunters. I have struggled to maintain any interest in them since then, but I really loved the starting area. Also, why all the Troll hate. Fair warning I don't have this username because I enjoy pissing people off.

But that's the thing isn't it. It is his list. He loved the Voss storyline. If he loved killing kobolds in caves repeatedly it would be the human storyline. It is a personal thing. If you tried to make some kind of objective list it wouldn't work because everyone has a subjective opinion.

Gilneas is definitely me favorite zone, and I've actually created new worgens just to do the starting zone for fun. I too love the look of the zone, and the music goes perfectly with it! Fun fact! Lord Darius Crowley is voiced by David Thewlis who played Remus Lupin (a werewolf) in Harry Potter!

The first time leveling in that zone was great but ... after my third panda it became lame and annoying. I just hate it when you can't skip a zone. That's why I also don't like the Goblin, Worgen, demon hunter and DK zones. But the stories are good.

I have a soft spot for the BE starting zone because my first ever toon was a BE. I really love the bittersweet, nostalgic feel of the Eversong Woods. I've since switched to Alliance but just yesterday I went all the way to the woods just to be in the zone again.

Ennio Paone The quests in all pre-wotlk zones are boring. Even in this video, 4 zones are after cata, and DK zone is from wotlk. If blizzard ever decides to rework the old zones, I'm sure they would make the quests more fun.

Dk starting zone's quests to me, were really enjoyable, playing through it when it first came out (and being very young) it felt so cool to be the big bad evil guy, killing people and the interaction with the the lore characters made the quests feel extra special as you know your having quite a large impact on future events *Edit* Plus the last few quests with lights hope chapel and the purification of the Ashbringer is just epic

I mean, if you REALLY think about it, it's a pretty good tactic on the Lich King's part. Capture your best friend, make you kill them to prove your allegiance, if you don't kill you off. It's not as far of a stretch as you think. Especially with how much the lich king plans stuff out. Like the entire time, lore wise, you're only doing what you're doing to be sent to your death to bring out Tirion. That's an awful lot of planning. Capturing a dk's best friend in life wouldn't be anywhere close to that level.
