I did an on-site recording not long ago for a reggae band. Knowing ahead of time exactly what needs to be mic'd and making a chart of source -> mic -> input signal chain sped the entire process up a ton. At the end of the session, the keyboard player made a comment about how efficient everything was that day. It felt good. 😎

Great advice mate! I know from both sides of the studio as a drummer how to get the best out of people and also who I wouldn't work with again... Stress is the killer in life, I feel the true role of the engineer is to help the performer minimise that lol almost a councilor / therapist with mixing skills

Good points all around. The British Special Forces have a big sign in their mess hall saying: Remember the seven P´s! Stands for: Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Think it applies equally well to any studio session,- and in this I also feel that the studio and the engineers/producers have the right to ask the clients/musicians to arrive well rehearsed and well prepared. Nothing as frustrating as waiting around for people to sort themselves and their gear out,- or realizing that you´ve set up everything to make a perfect recording of people who are underrehearsed. Waste of time and money and time that could have been better spent,- not always enough to tell yourself that at least you´re making a little money,- it´s still frustrating to everybody involved.

You forget a copier so when someone scribbles out a sketch of a song you can make copies for others on the session. Restaurant menus and maps to close places. Storage area for cases outside the tracking room. media so if client want a flash drive of some roughs or they just filled their SSD you can sell them something to help them out. plenty of parking.

Hey! Andrew, excellent video on setting up a session. Sometimes it's the little things that make all of the difference. I have a question, do you have a video on haw you set up the Behringer monitor system with your interface and DAW? From what I've seen it works with the X32 but there isn't a lot of documentation on how to set it up with different systems.
@AndrewMasters2 жыл бұрын
It’s line level inputs. So you send line level to those inputs from anything that has line level outputs.

All super good tips; taking care of all this stuff just frees up your brain for the important stuff later. Also, you’re gonna feel damn good the first time someone is inspired, and grabs that pen and notebook😊 On a different subject, have you looked into this new interface from Neve, Andrew? I’d love to hear your thoughts?

I see you have the JHS Colour Box V2 Preamp Pedal. Would you ever try doing a review on it for drums? I have been curious for the longest time to try it on all of my drum channels at home. Is it worth the money? Does it sound good In comparison to your warm audio preamps/EP channel strip? Any advices is very much appreciated. Thank you for all of your super helpful context man! What about recording without click track, what's your view on it and experiences with it?
@AndrewMasters2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what the session is - but nearly every session I’ve worked on has used a click.
@sebastiansantrac2 жыл бұрын
Ok for experienced bands and artist but it usualy makes producing after recording a tough time. Hard to comp, hard to reuse chorus parts for more than one chorus… if you can talk to the band and persuade them to use it, do it!
@HollerAtcherBoi2 жыл бұрын
I prefer a “kick” track with the highs rolled off. Less annoying than a metronome click and less chance of headphone bleed into the mic.

I ended up going with the Art Pro Dual RDB just because it was 1/4 of the price. I’ll let you know how it works out for me.

yep about 2 hours before a session, i light a cookie scented candle and let it fill the air for around 45 minutes, then kill it. the scent lingers long enough that it's present, but not overwhelming, and subconsciously, I think the very faint cookie scent relaxes people--it's cookies, who doesn't love fresh baked cookie? :D
