The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course: rtw-adventures...
Why I always comeback home safe in one piece?
I guess that you expect me to tell you some secret riding techniques, but I will disappoint you and will tell you that I don’t have this in mind. I will try to explain as simple as possible what I do and how this always help me to come back home safe in one piece. I believe that when we try to convince someone, the personal experience worth more than thousands of hard to pronounce words and the typical clichés you already heard many times..
Tip N: 1 - Never put yourself in the situation you cannot handle alone.
Let me explain what I mean: Even if you are in a group, always do what you believe is right, or your skills aloud you to do. Do not try to imitate or to match with others. This could lead to thin ice and finish very bad.
Tip N: 2 - Travel alone or with maximum one friend.
Many people will disagree with me on that point, but it doesn’t matter. I am 100% convinced in this.
Tip N: 3 - Always wear full motorcycle gear.
I know that you have heard this many times, but most of you never listen. I keep seeing people riding motorcycles with hiking or army boots, because of the comfort. You have to understand one simple truth - comfort and protection never work together. I am not going even to discuss the situation in Asia when the people don’t know what is protection
Tip N: 4 - You are not a great rider, you have been lucky.
I am tired to listen from people how great riders they are. How they been to so many places, they rode so fast and dangerous roads and have so much experience…How they see everything and cannot be surprised because they riding from many years and their instincts are on different level, how they feel the danger and eliminate it without any problems and so on and so on…
Tip N: 5 - Ride the bike you can control.

derHerbman, have you heard the german hockey coach had an accident in Croatia two years ago? He's an old man but he's definetly on the brave side. The way he entered a serpentine was on a beginner level. He carried too much speed, damaged my father's car and he hurt himself bad. That's just one example of german old biker I know so fuck the aphorisms. 🙂

You are SO correct. I've recently downsized from a heavy 1200cc Harley to a light 250, and I'm much happier and feel more in control and this bike suits me perfectly. I ride mostly alone, on roads less travelled and I'm not trying to impress anyone. I want to have my own experiences and enjoyment, free of the encumbrance of other riders whims. So I stay as safe as I can, I wear all my gear and I ride totally in accordance with the conditions and my abilities.

Years ago as a young bloke I bought a classic bike and joined an Historic motorcycle club, most of the members were well into there sixties and seventies. After a few club runs I realised why all these old blokes were still alive and riding, it was because they all diligently followed those five tips there whole riding lives. Very good advice, and I agree on the luck factor, even the best rider in the worlds luck could run out, if it doesn't then he is indeed lucky!

second time ive watched this video -- its very important. I started motorcycling at the age of 52 and I know lots of experienced bikers. All of them have an opinion, all of then have advice that costs nothing -- and thats usually how much it's worth. Most often that's because they think I'm just like them and must want exactly the same things from biking that they do. And only one -- my oldest friend -- has ever said "I'm not a faultless rider, I've just been very lucky." Apart from you. And that, officially, makes you wise. Thank you for all you do on this channel.

If you break your leg and spend time in hospital, there's an opportunity to see other victims on the hospital ward that can be a lot worse off than you. Those images have stayed with me and made me very determined to take all the measures I can to ensure I'd never end up back there again. You don't need to be going fast to hurt yourself on a motorcycle, it's all in the way you hit the ground, or hit whatever is in your way when inertia takes over. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're not. Skill really doesn't come into it.

Very good points. I was always taught that just because someone has ridden 20 years doesn't make them a good or skilled rider. I have always said a proper Motorcycle Safety & Riding Course needs to be taken. In many countries it waves the need for a government riding test. Too many dangerous riders out there. Most insurance companies give discount for it. Everyone I know , no matter years of riding experience, thanked themselves for taking skill courses and learning something new. Same with online videos and go practice. 'Ride Like A Pro' has some online examples for riders. They teach the basic Police riding techniques. Never Stop Learning & All the Gear All the Time

about the going to work excuse, I have a decent sized tank bag that can hold a pair of shoes and a pair of pants and all the other trinkets one would take and it's perfectly fine. I arrive at work, go to the toilette and change in like 5 minutes and done. So, unless your work place requires some crazy suit & tie etiquette I really don't see why one would not fully dress in proper motorcycle gear when going to work. As a side bonus, you get some nice proper looks from people when coming in fully geared up :D

I agree with the video and with comments riders are making. Groups riding changes my riding style waaaaaay too much for my liking. I do a lot of group riding and a lot of lone riding. My lone riding trips are calmer, more interesting, safer and more comfortable. I have got to a point now where I have told my group I don't want to race to the next checkpoint I want to take in the scenery and experience the adventure the way I want to. Saying this has resulted in one other member saying the same and we now ride further back and enjoy our rides more. The other three race to the next checkpoint dangerously and we just meet them there 30 minutes later.

More good advice from YODA. I find mid capacity bikes a good compromise, they are more fun to ride, not over stressed so engines are more reliable than say a smaller capacity engine but not as expensive to service as a larger capacity engine like a 1000cc+ multi cylinder bike. Nothing is perfect so it all has to be a compromise, many people say they can lift a bigger heavier bike but ask the question of why they dropped it in the first place, was it too big and heavy to hold up ? A lighter bike is easier to hold up so less chance of dropping it, so less chance of having to pick it up. I seen an interesting thing on 44 teeth, one of the guys got done for speeding in Switzerland doing 150 in an 80 zone, instant 1 month ban and 4000 Euro fine, is more power and speed really needed in the age of hi tech speed detection equipment.

I would sum it up like this: Always use the bike you can handle properly on the terrain you chose for your adventure. I had a 600FZ6S for 15 years when living in Europe, and I loved this bike. But it is of no use in Romania where I live right not. Roads are in so bad conditions, so many potholes or even no roads at all. Why would I need a 100hp bike? I sold it 4 months ago without regrets to buy an MT 03 from 2006, same engine as the XT you own, just a bit more road oriented. And I have a 650 Freewind, and a TW 200. Depending on what I want to do, I change bikes. I'm lucky I can do that. But I always feel comfortable wherever I go, because I know I won't put myself in trouble at least with the inappropriate bike. And that makes all the difference! Ride long, ride safe!!!

Everything what u saying in this video and all your videos is true and help me so so much about my raiding experience and im so thankful to you about that. I only ride for 6 months in UK and i have 5000 miles thats all my experience is almost nothing to most raiders. But big part from my raiding time is practice, practice and practice slow raiding everything what u can imagine on parking lot. slow raide, full lock start, figure of 8 with full lock, U tuns with leaning bike, i made and practice over 100 emergency stops and avoidance on different surface and condition and speeds. Pretty much all slow raiding practice what u find on youtube i go and practice. Just to get used and learn my bike and physically to be able to control it. IS that count as RIDE the bike you can control ? the bike we speaking is kawasaki z900. Yes maybe 99% will say from nothing to 900cc are you crazy and i agree but i progressively learn the bike. i have never lost control on it so far or drop the bike or lose discipline or lose self control. Question is why i buy 900 as first bike is simple because i love it. i know you always say the bike is tool but i cant describe the experience what that bike give me. IS the best thing i ever buy in my life. I simple cant imagine my self ride something different and honestly i love all bikes ( on my CBT test i strugle alot on 125cc and on my training and test on 700cc was so much more easy ). My point is about tip 5 ride the bike u can control it. Is my experience count as Ride the bike you control or no.

It is to early to make any judgments about your riding skills. It is very good that you practice a lot, but as I said in the video the situations are countless. I also think that you get the wrong first bike, but I wish you all the best with it. Don't even think that you are good, because you are still far behind.... keep riding!

Thanks for the video! I wonder about the groups, I find they can be quite different depending on the leaders (when I traveled with professionals, it was much more pleasant than just a random person off the street, mostly because the professionals "laid down the law" when needed, many people don't know how and when to do that and often don't know what the best rules for group riding are either, not to mention an additional responsibility of the leader for the people in the back who have to ride much faster to catch up). An advantage of a group is, if you travel through remote areas, you have someone with you who can help you. When hiking, I heard about traveling in threes, in case of problem one person stays to help, the third can get an external help (helicopter etc.) if needed. If you travel alone and don't keep on the beaten path, it can take time for you to be discovered.

Excellent job! Every word was practical. However, at the end of the day everyone is going to ride their ride. Just as you say, if we are alive we are lucky. Period. But we choose to take that that risk. Most people would never ride a motorcycle no matter how much protective gear they put on. They can see that it is still very dangerous. It’s a choice we all make My Harley has a 6 gallon fuel tank. If that tank is full I can just about lift that bike up on level clean pavement. I am sure that I would never lift that bike if I was on gravel mud or sand. But if I chose not to ride a bike like that, I would have missed out on tens of thousands of miles of pure pleasure. I don’t want to take away from your words of wisdom. This is excellent advice, and everyone should be educated about the choices they face. But again it boils down to everyone making their own choice on what risk level they are willing to except. Safe riding brother. Keep up the good work of educating people the way you do. I love your straight forward videos and teaching style. Thanks

Lucky? Question; do all those miles without accident happen because of luck? Or is it the result of training, practice and riding within your limits? In it other words a sensible approach. I think training and practicing skills produces safe results. Sometimes we are all lucky, nobody perfect. But safety can be engineered into a journey. It's all about attitude. The right one. Just my two pence worth. Happy travels

@@motorcycleadventures Yes. Practice, training, good decision making, make you luckier, but that's all. When a kangaroo jumps out in the middle of the day, you're just out of luck. I've ridden with a guy who literally had 2 million km. He rode like a madman. Yeah, his luck ran out one day in India and he hit a car, breaking his leg.

@@motorcycleadventures In Poland we say: "If you're not lucky, a brick will fall on your head even in a wooden church." Despite of this, thinking and everyday training increases luck very much.
