Sound advice Simon. I have been playing a long time, but am limited in competition experience.I have learned so much from defeats more than wins. The fitness element is massive,as is consistency and tactics. The players who I lose to usually have all the previous skills mentioned but above all have played many more competitions than me so there is no short cut. However, I will enjoy the steep learning curve whilst my body can still handle it. Good on you for playing competitions again.

Hi Simon some gold advice here. As a tournament player myself I can attest that consistency, fitness and playing smart are the keys to winning a lot of matches and tournaments. Often I find the players who win tennis matches and tournaments are the ones who are consistent and play smart and intelligent tennis. If you gave me a pound for every player I saw who had a huge game but their inconsistency and lack of smarts meant they lost a ton of matches, I'd be a very rich man. I cant wait to see yours and Alex's continuing journey getting back into competitive tennis👍

Exactly, a good example of that is Daniel Evans. He doesn't have big weapons, but oh does he play smartly!
@grantdelmege27242 жыл бұрын
@@MrBolaextra actually it is surprising how hard Evans hits the ball off the forehand and serve. I've seen him hit a serve at 139mph before. But yes I agree, compared to the heavy hitters out there he is a little light weight but he's so smart he out thinks many of them👍

Simon, what you say about not overtraining is important. I was hitting tennis balls every day. I hit twice on many days (so 4 hours or so) and the days I didn't hit twice I went to the gym for fairly heavy weightlifting. It was too much for my 50+ year old body. I drove my immune system down and ended up with mononucleosis. It took two years to get over it. I actually felt perfectly fine until I suddenly got really dizzy during a match. Not playing for 2 years sucks, so all should remember not to overtrain. You can't necessarily do what you did in your 20's and 30's when you get older.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Overtraining is a real problem as we age. I’ve pushed myself too hard since playing again, numerous times and ended up injured. It’s a marathon, not a sprint 👍

Thank you Simon Those are great advices I am definitely taking them in. What would be your best advice to get over match nerves(when the match starts)? Sometimes I feel like I play 10% and could not get over it.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Match nerves are often the way players play better. It’s a case of competing often enough until you get familiar with that feeling and learn how to deal with it. I still get extremely nervous before matches, and I’ve been playing them since I was 4
@cypcbp2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it may seem to be more stressful coaching than playing, but ultimately the player has to stick with the game plan and control their actions and, by default, influence control on the opponent actions. The player in control will normally win. Great match videos and thought - provoking, informative takeaways from your match experiences.

Great video and some super tips. Well done for posting and answering queires personally. Please I was struggling the same with gasping in long rallies, to the extent the opponent was complaining about time wasting, even though my games are not in any league situations. I started to do press ups, I have gotten to 16 press ups in one go, once a day, after 2 weeks. I checked my blood pressure immediately after these pressups and recorded 199/83 with 79 heart rate and 186/76 with 67 heart rate. I was a bit concerned by the numbers but felt fine, as the pressups take about 30 seconds to do. I am checking my last tennis games, which I record and upload when I have time, noticing during a long game 7-5 to me, that I was not gasping so much, in rallies. I imagine the pressups done daily, are similar to HIT training but I will keep an eye on the pressure readings, as I am 60 years and like to play tennis games when I can. Thanks, I would love a 2 hander backhand but too scared to play it in a game....

Absolutely spot on insights !.. Surprisingly for myself ( i am not a tournament player - but am now considering playing in 55 and over - i play tennis almost every day for the past 3 years . Training methodically - totally focused practise ) some of the points you made in this video align with my comments on your match against George. So it helps me understand that perhaps I am on the right track. Thank you. ! 1 more point I would like to perhaps humbly say is that you probably need to get to about 180 lbs in weight for even better results. I was able to drop 13 pounds in 6 weeks when I started my intensive tennis journey in 2018 Aug. All i did was ( play every evening - 45 mins . Wall practise mostly - high intensity - replaced lunch with a green salad and some nuts ). results were amazing - dropped from 193lbs to 180lbs And am able to maintain it for the past 3 years with tennis !.. The game has gotten better - hitting partner ( played in an academy for 4 years is 28 yrs old - phd student ) . I can play ten points with him and get 6 or 7 occassionaly but he will easily beat me on speed and power and massive topspin in sets .. But I am watching a lot of your and Alex videos and bringing it into my game . So thank you ! thank You !.. Also started watching some tips from Pat. Muratogolu and the game is changing for sure.. ! :-)

It's better to drop balls at different spots on the court and range in your shots deep inside out deep inside in FH. Down the line FH and BH. Shallow inside service line shots to either corner and acute angles at ever depth. This works better than wall. Wall you basically practice up the middle racket angle. It's ok for getting the feel of straight away shots but not much for variety and range memory. Your probably in UK but in America baseball players practice soft toss ad tedium to develop smooth swings at various locations. Tennis is just as adaptable. Do this for starters. Stand in deuce court corner with bucket of balls drop them and hit the acute angle cross court FH over and over till you own it. Then stay there and go down the line over and over till you own it hit a couple hundred of each. Every day. Then watch how you own it in a set or match. The try the BH with same pattern. And all the different shots that arise. Of course it's better with a partner feeding you but often guys just want to hit or play sets and don't work on their components. Try it be experimental.

Something you don’t really see on KZbin is #5. It would be pretty interesting if you took the idea of constructing points to the masses - ideas, plays, theories, drills to build them, how to find out how to use your strengths to win and to minimise your weaknesses. Most ideas are generic like “cross-court, deep” etc. No pressure on you there then Simon 😁
