Hit the nail on the head. I always feel like eating alone is dramatized by others more than it is in reality. It's not a big deal- people are so self-absorbed. Who cares if a solo traveler eats alone. Eating is a necessity, right?

I travel frequently, so eating alone has become the norm for me. I use my 'eating alone time' to quiet my spirit, reflect, and of course enjoy the food. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

In lieu of eating alone, sometimes I will people watch, those that might be counting their pennies and buy them a meal. I make friends, learn about them, their country, some language and I walk away knowing I made an impact on someone"s life. :) Thanks Christine for sharing your valuable life lessons.

Good tips! The first time I ate alone in a restaurant I did it as a social experiment if you will. I would have enjoyed it very much if I could have been seated somewhere less visible where I could have people watched. Instead I was seated in the middle around couples who would not stop staring at me. Lol! Also the waiter was not sure what to do with me. Luckily I had something to read which is helpful. 😊

I was expecting this video for long. I used to travel alone before and the one thing I hated and was not mentioned here is the fact that I was constantly placed in the least desirables tables ( the ones next to the toilet) or way on the back even when streets looking tables were available. Then I decided to start eating street food or simply ordering food to take away. Always watch your videos. I am preparing a trip to India in a few weeks and they have all been so helpful in my planning. Thanks a lot.
@grrrltraveler7 жыл бұрын
That's one I've heard a lot actually but forgot about it. I'd say this is the day and age where you can request your seating and being that any person (single person) could ultimately be a secret shopper or food critic, that might make waiters bend to your demand (ahem, request). Enjoy India!!! Did I already ask-- what route?

Delhi-Agra-Jaipur. Only have one week to go there. Maybe another week in June to go to Thailand and later in the year maybe Nepal. Greetings from Jakarta. Will be in this part of the world for 3 years and want to maximize the experience by traveling all around this area.

I'd tell the waiter to place you where you want. I almost always choose my dining spot unless a room is crowded and if its crowded and there's only a shit spot, I might wait for a good spot to open. I never let anyone shove me in a corner. I like to have a good seat. To not speak up is a choice.

This helped me so much! When I travel solo, I always feel like I’m in a fish bowl when I eat at a restaurant alone. I think it’s harder for some people vs. others. I know I have to work myself up for it, so your tips help put everything into perspective! Thanks!

You've given me a lot of confidence to go out and eat alone. I literally do everything alone other than eat alone out at a restaurant. I've never done it before even though I promise I'll do it eventually. I'm going to do it tomorrow - I just have to take medication first haha.

When I'm traveling solo, I like to write in my journal or go over my travel plans while eating out. Occasionally I do meet some pretty great people, like the young woman who ran the kissaten where I went for breakfast every morning while in Kyoto. If things were quiet she would sit with me while I ate and we'd talk about my plans for the day. She helped make my trip very memorable.

I did this 6 weeks long in Thailand while solo roadtripping with a car. Watching poeple in different places while eating is really fun XD. The only reason I could do this is because my grandpa/grandma lives in Thailand and they own a car there that I could lend.

Ido 't get why is such a big deal for people to eat alone! If you live alone you eat alone so what is the difference?
@grrrltraveler7 жыл бұрын
True, but I think the scary part for some is eating alone in public and at a restaurant. Social norms and stuff.
@guapovagabondztales95867 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's not a big deal. Although I know people who can't be alone in general and always need to be in a relationship. So that might be one part of the population. =)

Fortunately I'm good with doing most things by myself, so I have no issues with eating by myself. But, that being said...the nice thing about staying in a hostel when traveling is that you have lots of other travelers that are also by themselves and so if a person isn't good with eating alone, they can meet other people to go with them. I agree with you on all of your points, though. They are great ways to help people get over their fear of going out and eating by themselves.
@grrrltraveler4 жыл бұрын

I find that when I eat alone the staff is rude to me or ignores me. This is why I usually get take out and bring it back to my room.
@grrrltraveler7 жыл бұрын
As a paying customer, you should always be made to feel like you're important. Having worked in customers service, single customers are the easiest and quickest to tend to. Tips are smaller but there's considerably less work and stress to deal with. but two things-- either you've got a busy waitstaff whos overwhelmed with work and tired. Or you could putting that 'don't bother me' vibe out too. People respond to how we feel and if I ever got a customer who looked like they didn't want to be bothered, I get that vibe and tend to them less out of respect their need for privacy.
