My only issue with these CPUs is that their motherboards are expensive. Half-decent X58 ones start at $100 on eBay and they're lacking a lot of features on newer ones.
@OzTalksHW
@OzTalksHW 8 жыл бұрын
***** I agree somewhat. If the price of the motherboards in your area is doable, then I would do it, because it will still be cheaper than purchasing a current gen i7 or i5 and you can OC it to current gen speeds. In your case, where the motherboards are very expensive, then I wouldn't do it. Haha

the e5450 motherboard are cheap in US should be around $30 i think and uk but and you can get 2 or even 3 pcie slots for the price but for a shitty on around £17 lol and the cpu is a beast.

I recently upgraded my i7 920 to a x5660 about a month ago. The 920 I could only get to about 3.2 GHz on a rampage 3 formula and ran that for 4 years. I was wanting to upgrade my CPU but just couldn't justify a 1151 price tag for the little improvement. So I got the x5660 for 50$ and couldn't be happier. I immediately over clocked it to 4.6 GHz and its stable. single core performance is a bit better than a 3770k and multi core is coming close to stock 5820k. Not bad for 50$ especially for just gaming.

The MSi X58 Pro was the cheapest I could find picked a new board for 70$. It overclocks surprisingly well, if you can live with SATA 2 and USB 2.0 that is, also the IOH is a little on the toasty side, however I managed to get it to run a lot cooler with a small 40mm fan on it. I have a Xeon X5650@4,3ghz sitting in it, multiplier of 20 and my BLCK is 215.

here is my top 5 CPU's (with future gaming support in mind) 1: i7-2600K 2: i5-2500K (usually you can get a 2500K with a decent Z68/Z77 mobo for well under $100 and maybe even bundle with a GTX 560/560 Ti/570 or Radeon HD 6950) 3: Q6600 (i dont recommend it for newer games, therefore it is not #1 - but it can play games just fine, and i own one myself so i can confirm that!) 4: FX-6100 5: i7-920 honorable mentions: AMD Athlon X4 750K, AMD A10-5800K, Intel Core i3 3220, Intel Core i5 750. thsi is just my opinion since i really dont care about the Xeon CPU's.

Trajan Augustus that is great to know and i do like my own "lulz machine" with a Q6600 @3GHz with an HD 7850 on, but not all games can use the Q6600 (many can, not all) and the 2500K and 2600K will do it much better. and because of the Skylake launch last year, there was a ton of those for cheap.

+cee128d Same here, especially as it's a dual processor. Two 8 core sixteen threaded cpus on one board?!? I have no idea how dual cpu's perform with gaming and rendering.
@cee128d
@cee128d 8 жыл бұрын
+HitManHey For gaming it would depend more on the clock speed than the number of cores once you get over 4 (notice how an equally clocked 4 core compared to a 4 core with hyperthreading of the same architecture isn't that significant) for gaming. When I disable HT on my 2600k I only lose about 1 or 2 fps. That and how PCI-E lanes available. But I will be watching this closely to see if I need to build one of these setups.
@FightCollective
@FightCollective 8 жыл бұрын
cee128d To be honest I am more interested in it's rendering performance. I shoot a lot of video of fight events that, when edited down, still leaves me with a 2-3 hour end edit that needs rendering... you can imagine rendering that file. Though my i7 3930k, 32gig ram and gtx 690 does a great job at rendering at 24fps in 1080. My older i7 2600, 16gig ram, gtx 760 is still rocking! Though I have given that to my son to use as a gaming pc. Was thinking of building a new editing pc (with used parts) next year (after Pascal gpu's has come out) so very interested in a dual cpu. I don't mind being a generation or two behind as hardware seems to be out pacing software and a five year old i7 seems just as capable today as it was five years ago (the i7 2600K being a point in case).
@techyescity
@techyescity 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah the only reason I jumped the gun is 4k editing is stupid.... i had to wait 5 hours to render that westmere PC build.... 5 hours... so ill take anything i can get, or better yet just have two rigs set up, so I can hit render and jump onto the other one and start editing arnie styles.

The Xeon E5 2670 is a neat cpu, 8-cores 2.6GHz which can turbo up to 3.3GHz, you can find them for around $200 AUD, only problem is the motherboard is a bit harder to find and not very cheap but for 8 cores intel cpu it still pretty good for $200, im glad you noticed how good it is, Great video.

Yo Brian (or do you pronounce it Bryan? omg) I have an Asus P9X79 Deluxe do you know if it would support the E5-2670? On Asus's website it says it supports the E5-2670 v2 but that's a 10-core CPU and it's Ivy bridge. It's absolutely incredible how cheap you can buy used computer hardware on ebay that still kicks ass today. I just don't know why people don't do it more often. The only reason I'm on x99 right now is because I can boot from NVME SSDs (can't do that with x79)

+Tech YES City X99 with E5-1650v3 would be awesome, as it can be overclocked quite a lot. And thanks for the E5-2670 tip, had no idea it was that cheap. Will it work with any X79 board or does it have to be certain model? As Westmere CPU's that have 6.4GT/s QPI need certain model of motherboard to work.
@circletech7745
@circletech7745 8 жыл бұрын
the xeon e5-2670 will work with any x79 motherboard (even if the board partner does not explicitly mention support for it) . Just make sure to update your bios before installing the CPU ;)

Dylan beat me to it, another big reason for jumping on this deal is the 64gb of ddr3 memory that I got for $110.... stupidly cheap for that amount of ram, ddr4 would cost me at least $350 for that amount. And I can pawn all the rest of the stuff off.

Definitely a unbeatable price to performance but damn they use a lot of power, but yeah I'm pretty sure when I bought my x58 motherboard they sent me one in the socket I'm assuming to protect the pins lol. I have the X5460 in a Dell Optiplex 380 (the desktop variant). Made a big difference to the Core2duo that was in it - the only issue is heat. It tops out in the high 70s when stress tested. It was a "proof of concept" shits and giggles experiment that has turned into a sweet GNS3 study PC. Delidded is a great resource - iirc that's where I got the link for a bios w/microcode to enable SSE4. Also have an E5540 running at 3.6. I'm tempted to try the E5650 or higher speed six core but I'm still running a Gtx750... So a better graphics card is the more sensible upgrade. :)

The 771 to 775 thing has really breathed new life into the 775 platform. Love that kind of stuff. Instead of having to recycle or re-purpose a platform, it get a little more life. One kid has an E5450 on 775 and GTX960 and he's doing pretty well on 1080P games. He can run fallout 4 on ultra at 1080P for example. Not bad for a motherboard from 2007.

Robin Vekety It's better than you might think. He had a HD7850 2GB and ran Fallout 4 at 1080. It choked on medium. With the 960, as mentioned it runs on ultra. Some games are a lot more CPU dependent. But it's way better than it should be considering the CPU is from 2007.

+Nadeem Shariff E5-2670 is in same performance league.... The tricky part is mobo. ECC only works in servermobo and these can be expensive, can have no audio or only 3v pci... He can slap unbuffered ecc in any asus desktop board. In route without ecc (regular unbuffered) in desktop board its again price factor of mb. Power consumption is about same, also when overclockin. AMD chip is officially unlocked.

Ehh, x5650 definitely is a much better value, surprisingly you can go for the Intel x58 board, now it definitely isn't the absolute best overclocking platform but I was able to get it to over 4ghz, now completely stable around 4ghz, the board was 130 the cpu was 60 and the thing was pulling around 10 in cinebench and 950 in the other cinebench, I can't remember which version is which lol, but anyway yeah you can't really beat that when an overclocked 6700k can barely beat that

Server components are not user friendly, lack consumer features and are typically more expensive. To use these xeons you need a server board and ECC memory... in effect reversing the "value" argument...

You do not need ECC memory to use Xeons, nor do you even really need server boards. So none of your components are going to be "for servers" except for the CPU, which will work the same as any other CPU anyway.

E5-2670 and X5650 makes sense if your going for a cheap dual socket workstation with a butt load of cores and ram. Otherwise I'd just go with new modern retail CPUs and motherboards for the warranty, support, upgrade paths etc. While I was looking into this, entire rackmount dual socket 771 systems can be had for $200-$300. So that includes ram, motherboard, psu, some type of chassis, etc. I guess the only good thing about Intel not being able to push the performance of next gen cpu is that used older ones still crash in price.

I just changed my X5450 for a 2600k last september(16Gb ram and the CPU can run at 4.6-4.8)... I hope I can use it for at least 3 years if I buy a better GPU(I have a 750Ti)
@MrInstinctGamer
@MrInstinctGamer 8 жыл бұрын
+Dhrazer Hard sell, the 2600k is already 5 years old and running behind 20% performance of the 6700k if they're both running at 4.4ghz. You might be able to get another 2 years out of it possibly, but it's kind of iffy and definitely falling behind I would say. Awesomesauce actually did a compartive video of his old 2600k rig at 4.6ghz w/ a 970 and 16gb of ram up against a rig with a 6700k at 4.4ghz with a 970. The consenus is pretty much if the game is cpu intensive you're gonna fall behind the 6700k, whereas if its GPU intensive (or playing at higher resolutions) the video card is far too busy and occupied to be sending out signals and processing faster than the 2600k can use to keep up. Or something like that not really sure. tl;dr depending on the games you're playing you could get 2 more years out of it. The 2600k would fall behind the 6700k at lower resolutions depending on the graphics card and the game since its far too old to be keeping up with how fast something like a 970/980/ti demolishes and renders 1080p outputs, catching up the 6700k when the gpu is being intensely used.
@Dhrazor
@Dhrazor 8 жыл бұрын
Bohunk Funk If I have any chance I'm not buying another Intel CPU... period... I also don't plan on buying anything below 8 core 16 thread in a desktop... I'm also not selling my 2600k in the next 3 years(and after it I won't be able to or it will not worth the hassle) ...I have a 750Ti, and I might swap it for an GTX 1170 or a R9 590 in late 2017 or in 2018... so yeah, if I had the money for a 6700k would would spend it on a GPU anyway...

these are good for budget kick around/mess around pc's, but i would never utilize older architecture for my main rig. For example the i7 6700k that I got OC'ed to 4.6ghz stable with my corsair ddr4 ram clocked at 3200hz and the minor oc i did on the r9 390x until i add a waterblock to it has a lot more going for it. Yes only 4 cores, but you cannot beat the future proof compatibility/ support they will get as well as the new architecture that provides better speed. That said I guess it really depends on your purposes. my old amd rig is now being used primarily for light video editing , but mostly for my 3d printers and other creative tasks and its aging hd 6870 coupled with a oc'ed 965 black edition and 32gb of ram is more than enough to handle what it needs. The chips you mentioned in your video might be better suited in my opinion towards maybe a server project or something outside of being a main rig. I just always have that preference in terms of a main gaming/daily tasks rig. Granted it did cost a lot more for the latest and greatest, but if you are on a tight budget or building a 2nd or 3rd pc with these budget chipsets I totally agree that a lot of value can be had for the money.
@techyescity

+lagoveride I am going to be utilizing #1 as my main rig, two of them together for 16 cores / 32 threads, that thing is going to mince 4k video editing. And gaming at 4k I only need 60fps, which at 3.3ghz (a bit more after bclk oc) should be perfectly fine.

I would inform you that the E5-2640 should be up there. There running for $39~$45 on ebay, and $50 on amazon (used of course & in US Dollars) the difference between them besides a even lover price is that the 2640 is nearly neck to neck with the 2670. Just slightly lower multi-core threading performance, but higher single thread performance. X5650 is nice, but it is really harder to find a x58 at a good price, even harder to find one that is not a server board. So for half (or nearly half) the cost of the X5650 you still get a 6 core 12 thread monster, but you will have a better time finding a Socket 2011 Motherboard (at a fair price even.) If I am wrong about this then please send me some benchmark score and enlighten me. :D

All of these processors need expensive legacy hardware, even a decent socket 775 board isn't cheap 2nd hand these days that has overclocking capability. I'd say the socket AM3 Athlon II x4 quads are the current best value for money chip. They work on socket AM2+, AM3 & current AM3+ boards and are compatible with DDR2 & DDR3 memory. They are usually about 20 quid on ebay but I got a complete HP PC for £10 that just needed a hard drive with one in. I threw the Athlon II x4 630 (2.8ghz) into my benching rig and had it running at 3.8ghz. A brand new AM3+ mobo is only £40 to put it in and it plays Fallout 4 well at stock speed.
