Great review. I am days away from signing paper for one of these. This video helps confirm what I love about these bikes. As an older rider that remembers days when my Triumph wouldn't start, or when the carb slide would stick on my old Yamaha, or ..... it's funny listening to modern riders complain about these things. "The fuel gauge is not accurate" I had a Honda trail bike that went from Full to half tank in a mile. LOL.

Quickshifter "misfire" also happens on BMWs. And probably bikes from any brand. You just have to be "sure-footed" when pushing-pulling the lever.

You beat me to it, by 11 months. I have learned to be very decisive and firm when using the quick-shifter on my R1200RT. High revs. also helps with smoother changes.

Thanks Sam for this video. It seems like most of the issues you are experiencing are user issues, quick shifter causing the misfire , how the chain is lubricated, vibration, etc and not bike issues. I'm looking at replacing my 1400GTR and my concerns are longevity of the bike itself, how long does the chain and sprockets last and tyres. It seems the front tyre only touches the ground half as much as the back wheel and I would be the same in the first year of owning that bike. I currently do around 25,000km per year. My 1400GTR has 210,000km on it, is as reliable as an old dog and runs like a sewing machine. The shaft drive will be the hardest thing to go away from.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Most of them can be avoided once you learn what you need to do, like any new thing I guess! You can also ride around them. Nice choice on the 1400GTR! Lovely bikes to ride and kudos on that mileage! I would say that this is a different breed of bike though so I would go into it knowing that. My dad had 80/90,000kms on his 990 Adventure and that worked a dream still so hoping with love and the right maintenance, this will get up there. I can't speak for the chain and sprockets yet as I'm only 6500 miles in, but they look basically untouched. The original tyres on this lasted about 4800miles before I swapped them out. They had a good few thousand miles left in them before I would have needed to swap them, but I didnt like the tyres and has no confidence in them in the wet. It hasn't munched through my Anakee Adventure's anywhere near as quick as I thought though, and I've not been riding how they were intended so hopefully it won't be too bad! Getting rid of the shaft is going to be a big change! I do have a review coming on the 1250GS and hopefully the new Tiger 1200 in the new year which are both shaft too, so those might be worth a look. Thanks for watching!

I agree with you on the fuel gauge - its fickle and a bit vague. Very quick to drop from 230 miles range to 180 but as you say its just one of its quirks. I still wish they'd been more imaginative with the fuel tank design and made it a 30 litre capacity.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I've come to just expect 150 miles if I'm riding hard, and 250+ on a trip and go from there! Would be nice if it was a bit bigger, but I am happy it will do knocking on 300 miles. Might do a full range test one day to see what it can do before conking out!

Sam thanks for prompt reply. Yes 14.4 is exactly what I am seeing. I was expecting to see 14.7 . Bike is a 2022 version so still well within warranty. I had a GT some years ago and KTM told me the battery was a consumable part so had to pay myself. I will try my local KTM dealer and see what they have to say. All points to the battery I guess. I live in Almeria province Spain. The 300Km trip I told you about must have had over a hundred hairpins and countless big sweepers in the mountains. If you are in Southern Spain you will be welcome to come out with my local group most definatley biking heaven around here. Its still ALL YOUR FAULT cheers mate glad you talked me into it.

The highest I've seen mine while running is 14.6 I think but I have a set of denali's, Garmin, Hex Ezcan and everything running off the bike constantly. Plus my phones normally on charge in the front port too! The batteries seem to be a bit of a annoyance across the brands. A mate of mine just replaced his Tiger's battery from screen errors and trouble's starting! Triumph wouldn't replace it either! That sounds incredible! The bike is immense on those kind of roads isn't it! Like an oversized superduke!

@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh mate! That's so bad! What did KTM have to say about it? There's a few people I've been chatting to recently with different brands of bikes having the same issue too. Sometimes this much tech will only be a downfall eventually!
@srk9357
@srk9357 2 жыл бұрын
Faults/Issues I've noticed so far, Handlebar hits the glovebox lid when on lock. Most phones won't fit inside it. Can't adjust levers down due to mirrors hitting standard screen. SAR screen fixed that. Footpegs too small for standing, rally pegs feel great but will chew your boots without comforters. But I take a US size 13 boot. No USB ports outside, only 12v. Gearshift not great for riders with big feet, not long enough, lever adjustment only gives you really high(perfect for Tech 7's by the way), or a bit too low. Nothing in between. Also end is fixed and doesn't pivot like older KTM models. Standard exhaust sounds like a fart in a tin can. Can't use custom switches to go to suspension settings. ABS MTC settings always revert to on when you start the bike. Unless you buy the dongle. Heated grips aren't standard. Seat refuses to stay in the high position, falls down into low while riding. That's what I've noticed so far.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Good run down. Most of these I've managed to solve for myself pretty easily so not too bad considering. Put some below to see if they help. The first two I've managed to mostly solve by getting bar risers. I bought them anyway for better comfort and they increase the clearance. Still not perfect but better. SW motech ones. I was talking to my dealer about the handlebar blocking the glove box and he said it's so people can't steal your phone if you leave it in there. Not sure how true that is or if it's a happy coincidence, but getting my phone out even with bar risers isn't easy so it could well be on purpose. Doesn't seem like any manufacturer realises the size of phones but I didnt think KTM did too bad compared to others. The Multistrada v4 one would barely fit a burner phone... let alone a normal size smart phone. My Samsung S21 fits, but any plus size phone don't. Saying that, I could get my s10+ in there without its bulky case so not bad going. Got the SW Motech adventure pegs which are the same. I don't have the bolt in to secure them to its really quick to pop the insert in/out. I guess the issue with stock pegs is exacerbated with bigger feet. Bought a 12V to twin USB waterproof plug off amazon for about £15 which works a treat. I mainly use the glovebox, and only use the USB for powering my tankbag contents when on a trip. After seeing the fight my mate is going through with his Tiger trying to find a good micro-din socket adapter that's not £50, I'd take that all day long haha. I think the ABS turning back on is a legal thing. Stop people taking legal action when the ABS doesn't work in a crash. I ride in Rally mode (tech pack option) most of the time so I can leave MTC down very low without it defaulting The seat falling issue is apparently being solved by KTM. They have a solution for it but stalled by the global production shortages. So hopefully that won't be an issue for much longer. Apparently the powerparts seats don't do it though. I've got them but don't ride with it in the high position so couldn't confirm or deny. The exhaust... yeah... 2022 emissions suffocation! The Akrapovic sounds pretty much stock too which is a shame. I've got the Arrow Sonora now with removable dB killer... that sounds insane! Thanks for watching!

The fuel gauge can get in a kind of hurry suddenly once it has reached the last two bars. It once went from 90km to low fuel to blinking in a few minutes, depending on the road's gradient, it seemed. I kinda panicked the first time, but now I know that at least 5L are still in the tank.

The fuel gauge might be the algorithm, where frequency of measurement and averaging is used due to fuel slosh from braking and acceleration… it obviously needs a lot of time and measurements to then average out the level and then compute the distance to empty.

790 quickshifter does the same, especially under power. As you say, it's not a fault as such, it's just the rider not being positive enough with their gear shift. I have the previous gen 1290 S/A R. The bike is fantastic but has a few issues: Keyless ride sucks. I get key out of range errors even with a new battery in the fob. Keyless ride is overly complicated, expensive, and just not needed. Motorcycles have used regular ignition keys for decades with no issues. Same with the electronic gas cap. It's silly. Heat on my left leg is pretty bad; they need to fit a heat shield. The bars sweep back a little too much. The throttle has just a little too much free play and it's not adjustable.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
The keyless ride on this model is much improved. I remember a few people complaining about failures with the previous gen SA, but so far I've not had a single issue with this one. I agree though, it's not necessary. The one thing I am happy about is that everything is keyless. It bugs me when ignition is, but the fuel cap isn't.. defeats the point even more!

I disagree with you on the fuel gauge precision. Mine is fine. Yes, it adjusts its estimation based on your average fuel consumption. The other day, I went for a short ride to break in my new tires, and I was low on gas. Since I wasn’t far from a gas station close to my home, I decided to check the accuracy. The fuel autonomy went down, and I decided to go back when it showed 20 km remaining. By the time I arrived at the gas station, it showed 0 km. I put 22.1 litres in the tank. And to be honest, I had not tried to really top the fuel tank for the previous refill. So, that was pretty accurate if you ask me (I might have been able to do 10 more km, but nothing more). Also, I have never put chain lube on my exhaust: that could be a « you » thing. Cheers.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Good to hear. I'm over 14k miles in, and mine is still the same. It will read 180mile range, then I'll ride 30 miles with it still showing 180, then will suddenly drop to 150 range. So it's accurate in a sense, but doesn't count down like a lot of bikes as I mentioned. Nearly caught me out a few times commuting to work thinking I had 50 miles range but dropping to 30 as I get on the motorway. The chain lube seems to leak down when putting it on nearer the front sprocket on top of the swinging arm... but not further back or under the swinging arm. A few other owners have confirmed they have also had the same thing so means they alter where they apply lube.

I rarely take a pillion as my girlfriend has her own bike though. 2) I don't run side panniers at the moment, just stick to soft roll bags. 3) It's a Givi Trekker Dolomiti topbox with the matching plate. I think the plate code is something like SRA7713. Hope that helps!

Hi Sam - enjoying your channel - thank you... my 2021 SAS' worst problem is the factory seat on higher setting, will occasionally drop a notch (like when landing a wheelie) to the lower position. Minor heart attack the 1st time it happened. Ricardo Yeep has a work-around fix for it. KTM dealer doesn't acknowledge that it's an issue or even known by the factory. Also, phone compartment too small for plus size phones. Otherwise - all good like you... I also can't help giggling like a fool when on the noise ;) One question re your traction control setting - I see you consistently ride with it set to 1... have you not had any slides that felt too uncontrolled, at that setting?

Hi James! Thanks for watching! Yes I've heard of this. My latest update on that is KTM made a replacement seat for it, but in testing it occasionally did the same thing but they are hoping to get a redesigned part out early this year. Regarding the TC, I've never had it slide out from me on the road, unless I hit gravel or something. I normally dial it up to around 5 in wet condition which helps with any break in traction from acceleration etc. Thanks again for watching!

I had the same problem with the quick shifter. When I had thicker boots on (cold) I wasn't pressing the lever up enough so it was like a fake gear. Put normal boots back on and never did It again. Few questions. What do you think of the extender on your front windscreen as at the moment all the air is just going straight into my visor area which is not very comfortable with visor open. Also what's your thoughts on your arai, the only thing putting me on buying one is no internal sun visor, was there enough room also for speakers for intercom inside? I also have the same problem with fuel readings, annoying but get use to how many miles left roughly
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Thats when I first noticed it! Bought some new Sidi Adventure 2 boots and it happened on the way home from the shop! The visor on the windscreen makes a huge difference! I can ride along the motorway with visor open and rarely put my visor down. I know the clip ons are hit&miss. Some are really good, others don't really help so I'd suggest getting a good one that's wide enough too. Mines made by Puig. I love the Arai Tour X4. So many vents, nice fit and having that huge field of view is great. I found the speaker cut outs were way too far back which meant my speakers were pushing against my ear at the back so I trimmed the foam inside the cheek pad which made it much better. Would have been nice to have a drop down visor but I have a smoked visor so not the end of the world!
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Haha great taste in bikes and boots! The Tour X4 is really highly rated across the peaked lid choices. I just fancied seeing what it was like to have one. The field of view is enough of a selling point for me, and because I'd look odd wearing an Xspirit 3 on a SAS haha! I do yes. The free KTM app is absolute trash! Wouldnt connect to the bike, or recognise anything at all! The paid one is okay. I only use it for the turn-by-turn navigation which is decent. The thing that bugs me is it seems to randomly choose to avoid motorways. I set it to that once or twice and it just does it every now and then which is annoying. Other than that, it's decent.

Only thing now is the speaker problem, I have the cardo packtalk bold and I'd imagine I would have the same problem. Do you know if there is a way to get your mobile phone contacts on the dash to make calls? Just looking on the net and puig do a touring screen but for the previous model, presume they are different fitments?

If it helps, my dad has a packtalk with the bigger 40mm speakers and thats on his Tour X4. Mine is a Sena 30k but I'll switch that up for the packtalk when I stop spending my money on bike stuff! Worth trying it on if you can! You can't get phone contacts on the dash, or make calls out which is annoying. I do wish there was more control of the phone through it but I can still do it through the Sena. They are different screw holes for the screen. Measured it up when I was at the dealer and they were quite a way out

If, hypothetically, that , on a track not a road, you were, hypothetically, to get the wobbles at, hypothetically maybe 140mph is there something in the electronics package that might help this problem ?
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes Жыл бұрын
Haha! Is this track also In Mexico? Because I've definitely been to that track too 😂 A few bits to try on that. Electronics wise, bump up the rear preload to put more weight over the front wheel. Most of it seems to come from a light front end. Everyone seems to raise the forks in the triple clamps by about 5mm which helps, and by that I mean so you have more sticking out the top of the triple clamp and essentially lowering the front. Although one guy did the opposite and it helped too. Weird right?! Other than that, Tyres seem to be a big factor for a lot of people. Some seem to cause it and other don't. Headstock bearing being a tad loose is the next thing I'd check after that. Get KTM to nab it up as they know its a common question so should do it for free. Worst case scenario, upgrade the oil in the steering dampener, although that's more masking the issue than solving it! Topbox caused a lot of wobbles for me personally and its gone since taking that off

@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes Жыл бұрын
Ahh, that's irritating! I've just replaced my battery after just over 2 years. I started getting regular preload/MTC errors when starting it up, which started over the course or 2 or 3 weeks suddenly. The stock battery voltage when ignition is on, but the engine not running was 12v, which is too low. It ideally needs to be above 12.4v. When running, it sits at 14.3v or higher depending on how many accessories I have on. The bike needs about 15 minutes of riding to replenish the starting voltage loss, too. My new battery is exactly the same make and model as the old one, but the maintenance free gel AGM version and all errors have gone. "Yuasa YTZ14S MF" The batteries that come out of the factory can be fine as mine was for 2 years, but they aren't the most powerful, so will be temperamental if you dont ride the bike a lot, so a lot do upgrade. Apparently, Lithium doesn't work well with the 1290s, though, for some reason. Some upgrade to Motobatt, or the £200+ Antigravity battery, which are meant to be great but sod paying that much for a battery!! In your situation, I'd get KTM to replace the battery for you if possible under warranty and get them to take a look at the misfire to see if it is the flywheel sensor. I adjusted my lever and its never happened since so I must have been touching the gear lever without realising! Hope you get it sorted bud

Ok moved the gear change lever to the furthest position and was on my tippy toes on the foot rest. Guess what only two misfires. One was me , idiot , trying to wind it on in 6th gear. So one misfire in 300Km. I can live with this. Started putting the bike on a battery charger when in garage. This now seems to have sorted the caution warnings. Battery as fitted is a gel battery so no problem in theory but I seem to have cured it. As you said its just learning to live with it. Cheers mate.@@SamVBikes

@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I can only answer from a few test rides on the previous model I was tempted to buy, so don't take it too seriously haha! The heat was one of the reasons I didn't pull the trigger. This new one is still warm, but it's directed away from you with the twin radiators, so you don't feel like you're sitting on an oven! You can still feel it on hot days though. As for upgrading, this new model, to me, feels a lot more refined and has a few new toys which is nice. The engine, Quickshifter etc just feels a little smoother, although some previous gen owners say it's not as 'crazy' as the previous one. I ride in rally mode all the time which makes it a beast to me but definitely ride one to see if you still love it. The height and weight distribution is a lot better though. A lot less top heavy, and much better balanced which really helps. A few nice little touches like back-lit switchgear, radar cruise etc which does make it worth it for me. Sorry for the long reply!

@@SamVBikes the misfire problem has been more or less tracked down to the fact that the wire from the o2 sensor gets routed behind the gear shift linkage. Completely different bike unfortunately. The Busa is completely sport touring. I've not ridden the new one but it seems more leant over and cramped compared to an ADV bike so could be more taxing on a long tour. The thing I love about adventure bikes for touring is the amount of space you get to add stuff onto it. A sport touring bike is difficult to strap luggage to. Because I'm pretty clueless when it comes to financials 😂🤦‍♂️
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! There are a few very quick fixes if you do get one of those. For example some people have their bikes randomly stop running even though they have a full tank... the dealers forget to turn on both the fuel taps sometimes! There's 2... most bikes only have one! I'm by no means a financial guru, and it's definitely worth doing more research but with the PCP, you get cheaper monthly payments which are subject to interest, then you get a balloon payment at the end which is what they think the bike will be worth based on your agreed mileage. If you go over the mileage, they can change their valuation at the end. So for example, a PCP might be £150pm, and after 2 years, you have a balloon of £6k to pay if you agree 10k miles a year. That mileage only matters if you give the bike back and walk away. If you buy it, it doesn't matter. On a HP (Hire purchase), you're paying more per month, but no balloon or mileage limits etc. The interest is charged per year, so you want the lowest interest rate you can get, although a new law was passed saying dealers can't really change that rate anymore, so try get money off accessories to make up for it. If the bike is 10k, and you have a 5% interest rate with the agreement over 2 years, you'll pay 5% of whatever the total is left each year Hope that helps! Very rough overview!

I have a few smaller capacity bike reviews coming! None are 125cc, but definitely lower license compliant! I get dazzled by the shiny, powerful, expensive bikes and walk past the small capacity bikes too much so trying to make more of an effort with them 👌🏼

I cant believe they haven't managed to get bikes out yet. I assume its to do with the global silicone shortage and chip production issues!

Hi Sam. No issues with mine, we'll explained about the quick shifter as you do need to be positive with it. Same as the fuel reading once you learn its not a issue, I fill up every 150 to 180 miles anyway. My mt09 tracer was the same, full reading then straight to half no increments till then. Still absolutely love the bike, grin with every ride. When's the arrow coming ? and what one you getting titanium or the dark one.

Precisely! Really not issues at all, just bits you need to get used to. I really had to concentrate to think of negatives haha! I dont know! Shipping it saying end of Jan estimated which is painful to hear! I went for the silver titanium. Thought it looked more stock and matches the titanium sump guard

Ordered through Bikestop (my local bike shop) as they have good connections to get it hopefully sooner! I ordered it pretty late as I'd spent too much money elsewhere haha

I'm up in Welwyn in Hertfordshire. I find myself over in Finchingfield quite a lot in summer as they are good roads between me and there. Could be good!

I mean... that being the worst thing is pretty high praise to the bike haha! It's a crap design yeah, but you get used to it after a month. The new ones have been changed to a different switch

I'm 18k miles in and haven't had any major issues. A very occasional preload error if loaded up but nothing that stops the bike riding. BMW, Triumph, Ducati, Aprilia etc all have very similar issues. Annoying but I guess it's not the size of the car market

Great bike… WAY TOO TALL! KTM designs all of its bikes for basketball players.
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Haha agreed! Although this one is much better as you can drop the rear preload. I can flat foot at 5ft9 if the rear PL is down around 50%

my dislike - how hard is it to make a windscreen that prevents wind blast to the helmet at highway speeds? ktm - do you have engineers more that 5ft 2 in tall? ktm is staffed by short engineers. only explanation. Austrians are tiny ?
@SamVBikes
@SamVBikes 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! There's definitely enough surface area on that front end to make something effective without it looking out of place. The clip-on makes a huge difference but would be nice if it worked from factory. Mind you... a LOT of new bikes have the same issue when they are meant to be touring/adventure bikes!
