The Crisco spread sandwich deserves an honourable mention because it went straight from hand to garbage bin.

Interesting that Germans got aid packages after World War 2 from the United States that included Crisco or something similar. The Germans called it Affenfett, ape-fat, and though some Germans used it as shortening or cooking fat, others flavored it by cooking onions in it, let it cool, and ate it spread on bread. Clearly a desperate move, though.

Once again, I’m going to say I’d be fine with Barry capping the amount of Anchovy Paste per sandwich. If I’m doing the math right, looking up that Pimento sandwich, 1/4 cup per 12 sandwich batch is 1 tsp per sandwich, or 1/2 tsp per half sandwich. If that becomes a salt lick, perhaps a cap of 1/4 tsp per sandwich. Maybe that makes something which is still very salty, but stands a chance of not going straight into the bin. I know the point is exploring old sandwiches for the modern palate, but when you can look at a recipe and know it will be inedible from the amount of salt and anchovy paste, it just seems like throwing food away. Having a maximum level that’s still high but at least edible seems reasonable.

So looks like any sandwich recipe with canned pineapple is generally a bad idea....
@Isaac.Eiland-HallАй бұрын
Kinda makes sense, though. Pineapples back in colonial times had the ultimate social cachet. They rented them out so people could sit around and basically, "Holy ****, you have a pineapple!" So it makes sense that once canning happened, people would use this newfangled ingredient for some variety. Alas, along with the good ideas come the bad, and it does seem that pineapple features in some of the worst. lol

1:15 was it a nice novelty though? I wonder if perhaps some of the salt bombs of yesteryear had something to do with the comparative abundance of physical activity and lack of geographical lack of access to refreshment. Most people had strenous, physical labor jobs, they were often walking or even riding horses rather than driving to places, there wasn't a 7/11 or starbucks or mcdonalds every 500 feet, and our diets generally had much less preservatives. Is it possible people needed all that salt because they were sweating from all the activity? they certainly drank more water back then, because it was usually the only choice for beverage.
@jic1Ай бұрын
Except a lot of the hyper-salty vintage sandwich recipes (in general, not specifically the ones on this list) seem to be tea sandwiches, not really the kind of thing you would eat during or after strenuous manual work. I think the most likely explanation is simply a generational difference in taste, with less availability of refrigeration also probably playing a part.

In the 50's, in rural KY., my grandmother used to make a sugar sandwich. White or "light" bread spread with a thin layer of butter or shortening, topped with a teaspoon or two of granulated sugar. After assembled, hold the sandwich under running water before eating. Strange, no?
