Thanks a lot for this! To clarify, I was never Top500. I was like a Top10 Lucio, I believe, but overall I never got the Top500 emblem. I was barely in GM, though. Many, many moons ago. I really enjoyed watching this because it both confirmed some of the issues I thought I had and showed me some flaws I wasn't quite aware of. I'm glad though that you said I have the potential to get out of Plat again. I have been climbing recently and if I hadn't gotten a random disconnect yesterday that cost me 50SR and the drive to play more, there is a chance I'd be back in Diamond by now (I was like 100SR away and it was early in the day). Zarya is still a fairly new hero for me so a lot of the timings and such are something I still need to internalize. Some of the times when I wasn't fully committing to a push were because I was frankly overwhelmed and scared I would miss something so I had to catch my bearings a bit and would rather stay on the payload to do so and not C9 because I didn't look at the time. I am fairly certain that will kind of just go away with practice. Fear of misjudging the situation is also why I bubble early. As well as sometimes just wanting charge, I guess. That, as said in the email, is one of the things I am most actively working to get better at. Those last two gravs were kind of just defensive gravs. One because their Rein was nano'd and that's scary and also I was just kind of like "HOLY SHIT WHAT IS HAPPENING OH BOY I ACTUALLY GOT THE BUBBLE OFF ON OUR PINNED REIN!!" and the final one because he shattered and it was such a clutch situation, I thought I might as well just try to take Mercy and, hopefully, Rein out of the fight to level the playing field. Voice comms were very chaotic here too because it went from "lol no chance" to absolutely massive hype. I really wish I had recorded it all. But basically that was why I sometimes didn't take the extra second to decide, especially on those last two because I didn't wanna just lose a fight and walk back from spawn with grav while they push it all the way and win. Though I do grav quite often to just get like two picks or to counter a big ult, like Nano-blade or nano-rein. That might be the support-mindset showing itself since I basically grav at times when I would also use beat on Lucio. Anyway, enough excuses. Thanks a lot again for this. It's super helpful!

You also gotta keep in mind that this is me picking up a new hero after 2-ish years of low-SR autopilot gameplay so it's not really indicative of where I peaked. Not sure it would have looked any different if I WAS in actual T500 in Season 3.

Sounds a bit like my career in Overwatch, been playing since end of closed beta, but I use every hero so I have a very long learning curve. Now I am moving forward in the ranks and have hit plat and can sustain myself across almost all the heroes. (I always played Mystery Hero to learn everyone) Anyways I am creeping upwards in almost made it out of plat before a series of horrible games where my team just does there own thing. But Platinum games are starting to get very nonchalant attitudes it seams so I need to climb higher. I understand this persons woes.

I consider myself a Zarya main and I feel like this is just unfamiliarity with the character. Yes positioning and cooldown usage in general is a universal concept, but the way a Zarya positions and uses cooldowns is tremendously different. Playing Lucio, you can get out relatively safely most of the time and you control the engages, Zarya is a strange one because you really have to be observant of your Rein's playstyle and prioritize enabling your Rein early fight, and as you build charge, start toeing the line of aggression. Also if you are high charge and want to get aggressive you definitely need to be vocal and call for the team to push forward, and if they don't, you abandon that aggression. Zarya is pretty difficult to just pick up and succeed with, as evidenced by some of the best DPS in the world struggling on Zarya in the OWL GOATS meta.

Definitely. I haven't been playing Zarya all that much for long and, I went over this in the email, I kinda just spent the past year or two kind of just auto-piloting in the game in general. So in some ways it's like I have only been really playing the game actively again for a few weeks. And a lot of these habits come from how I play Lucio and some of it is from when I used to play with my Zarya-main friend back when he still played this game. I'm kind of just trying to go from smooth-brain muscle-memory player to someone who actually thinks again. And I think I am making progress there.

I recently started playing overwatch again after a long break and when I started to play and main Zarya (I was previously a pig and soldier main) I climbed about 500sr not really knowing how to play her. Idk why but I was able to pick up zarya pretty easily and get a lot of value

@@itsshadow4932 don't take this as an insult but what rank are you? Because I initially just picked up Zarya and climbed really fast and the plateaued because I had bad habits. In lower ranks, I got charge super easy and just bowled over people. The higher I climbed, it became much more about using bubbles in intelligent ways to support your team, than always trying to carry by melting people.

@@Pandsu that's kind of the the vibe I got from watching your play, it's really just having to adjust your tempo. In bad situations, Lucio can speed out, for Zarya, if the enemy is super aggressive, your escape clause is your bubbles. In a slower poke game, you can use them by rotating with your Rein to take poke damage and get high charge quickly, against aggressive teams, bubbles become more about bailing your team out and negating cooldowns (like using them to cleanse anti-heal off of your Rein). After I get high charge, ally bubbles are usually just used to "support" my team, and personal is used to get a little aggressive to get a big pick. I think being able to balance supporting and being aggressive is the biggest adjustment, because just doing one or the other will be unsuccessful. Good luck though, Zarya is soooo rewarding when you figure it out.

@@kevinkalani Thanks man! Yeah, I'm definitely getting there. It's really just a matter of bad habits from auto-piloting and really internalizing that I am not just a helpless, low-HP support lmao. I see a scary guy walk at us? My visceral reaction is to bubble even though I then immediately know that was dumb. It's already gotten better though, believe it or not. I think I am fast improving, this is just kind of me in the middle of all that. I originally wasn't even gonna send in a replay this early into the new climb but this match was just such a hype comeback after getting absolutely rolled that I had to send it. I also told him in the email that I was proud of myself for this one in particular because of mostly just me keeping the team's spirits up and keeping them from giving up when their mental was already completely down and they were sure we were gonna lose. I am super sad I didn't record this match directly for the voice comms because that part was really huge. Everyone was getting tilted, I stayed positive and cracked really, REALLY dumb jokes and then got people to keep trying and that way we won a game that literally everyone thought was an easy loss. It was very rewarding and by the final stretch voice was in full hype mode and you could barely hear yourself think lmao

Like "summary, you're giving permission for your teams comms to be heard in the replays" and each player can confirm or deny the request and their specific audio could be omitted/accepted for the recording. @Vessel I think the problem would be those groups where the group isn't in the team chat. If it's a group of 6 they wouldn't need to switch to team chat in which case recording /might/ be fine, it might not, but if it's not I'm sure they wouldn't want to be recorded if it's just like 2 friends chillin in the group voice chat. Gets complicated.

I just can't really get into any other game as much as I got into Overwatch. I don't even play CS anymore, partially because of the attitudes there sucking all the fun out of that one too. And when you're a disabled guy stuck at home 24/7 to the point where a global quarantine doesn't change your lifestyle one bit, you kinda end up just sticking to the game you enjoy, even if that enjoyment becomes harder and harder to keep. It's almost like an addiction or something. I don't have a problem, I swear! I can quit whenever I want!!

Yes and no. It's more like "I have been playing in lower ranks for dumb reasons while completely smoothbraining and being on auto-pilot for like 2 years and now I play like trash but I can learn to get better again and climb" which is what I am currently doing and the whole point of getting my gameplay analyzed and learning from it. I have been playing mostly with Bronze, Silver and sometimes Gold friends lately. That does things to your game sense.

@@Pandsu that's absolutely true and it just shows how much you depend on your team working together in Overwatch. I think you react very fast to a threat of incoming damage where there is none because people in plat are not organized enough to be that fast. Sty's tip to take a breath before you do anything might be exactly right, but you will have to drop that habit again when you hit dia or masters. My idea is: Maybe you can apply your skill better if you look for a team before you queue, so everything is more organized

But you gotta keep in mind that this is me only really trying to climb again and solo-q-ing for a few weeks and I never mained Zarya or tank before that (after smoothbrained autopilot play in low ranks for years where I was barely paying attention) so I do think I can improve. I honestly don't expect to ever get to GM again or anything but my current goal is to eventually just hit Master and while that might take a few seasons to happen, I think I can get there. Though, yes, it can also be that it's only downhill from here. I'm not very healthy (both mentally and physically) which definitely doesn't help and at 31 years old I'm not exactly the youngest anymore either so maybe it's just all downhill from here but it's still worth a try.

I feel this was more helpful than most of the other overanalyzed video's I've seen so far. It was super critical on bubble and ult usage, which I feel was only the case because the player says they used to be top 500. Most other video's seem to cover faily basic concepts. And this is coming from a low gold player. (I mean, you kind of said it yourself, watching it back you notice all the obvious mistakes, so for another person the same thing goes)

This is someone coming into the game at a decent level bringing skills from other games getting into T500 and getting comfortable and they just haven't improved. The entire playerbase is so much better now than what it was and some people just don't get better, (I know I'm one of them first year of Overwatch I was high diamond and I watch my gameplay and it's horrible), I've definitely improved but now I'm lucky to get over mid Plat.

I’ve sent my first clip in when we somehow won a 4v6. I played pharah and Mei who are probably 2 of the best characters to play at low ranks in my experience. They are easy to use and can ruin a team that are not very organised, like most teams below diamond. Just getting crucial picks on pharah and shutting down enemy carry hero’s on Mei.

3:22 I'd love voice comms too, but I think how replays work right now is that they record the match on either client end or server end as a bunch of inputs and those inputs are translated into all sorts of movements in the world. They really only have to track the inputs of all 6 players and put AI players in a world following those exact inputs. To record audio, and then play it back on top of the replay would require a lot more space... especially to keep the audio from losing it's quality. I think it would be a good idea but, I'd like to see it implemented as an option in settings and let the clients record it themselves. That way, you're not taking up waaaay more valuable space on the server and the clients and turn it off any time they liked. To finish off, I'm (obviously) not working with Blizzard or the OW team to know how big their many servers are or what their storage is like. So, this could be waaay more plausible than I think.

This guy has a lot of zarya beginner problems like i had for a long time. he is using bubble preemptively instead of reactionary. a good mindset for bubble usage is: dont use it too early. you gonna get charge in the fight or by saving people anyway. little tip for zarya vs dva: when dva pops out of the mech right click the top of the mech so dva gets damage when she pops out of the mech. ps: i think he should increase his sensitity to improve his tracking. it sounds counter intuitive but this made my tracking like WAAAAAY better. @stylosa this is typicall plat zarya play. my zarya is a lot better and im low diamond. he needs to get his bubble usage down in ordner to rank up

yes, this is even a 2400-2600 zarya play, buuuuuuut, as he used to be top500, he may be thinking he is better and the team dont know how to play (aka team is throwing) , as a 2800-3100 zarya player myself (i play on special circumstances and cant climb ), i think he is doing so many mistakes regarding game sense, game play, and even humilty as a person. and I disagree with Sty who thinks this player is diamond, true diamond players are better then me and ofcourse better then this zarya.

i had a zarya in 3100 who kept bubbling me prefight and didnt have bubble for me when i was swinging or purpled, then started flaming me for being a bad rein without being specific as to what mistake i was making? then i called him out on his bubble usage and he was like "no. ure bad". im actually so done with people in this game

@@Pandsu its incredibly important as tank to stay cool. you have to remember that you have a shi... ton of hp. even widow can't 1 shot you. so you can walk in front of reins shield (with care) to make them use cooldowns and then bubble yourself + retreat behind him instantly (its called leap frog btw). a good rein will stay directly behind you but you have 2 be carefull as A LOT of plat reins will hug the payload 24/7 instead of making space. you will need a lot of hrs to get the positioning and bubble usage down. i recommend watching the youtube channel of canasian. his videos are old but his vod reviews are very helpful as he breaks down every single bubble play + why it was good and why it wasnt.

@@mellamoJean in terms of gamesense he is actually better obviously. but learning every nounce of a hero is difficult. even as i had 100+hrs of zarya i was sometimes making the mistake to engange onto the enemy without having my own bubble. you have to learn step by step

No ur wrong. With Mercy you can't stay in one spot. With Ana you only have to choose a spot with great sight lines behind ur team. Mercy has to know when to move who to move to etc

To be fair to Sty, I kinda had some self-deprecating humor in my email and called myself a trash plat-border plat-hardstuck. So he just went with it, which I don't mind. Though yeah, attitudes were a big reason why I dropped and got much worse at the game than I could be by now. I wasn't even usually the one getting blamed (unless I played DPS or Rein, the latter I was genuinely terrible at and still am not that good with) but I was kind of a sponge for the overall mood in my matches. So even if people were just toxic at each other and went like "but you're cool, Pandsu. Keep doing what you're doing", that still ruined the match for me too and eventually it just kinda broke my spirit and made me lose my shit and then decide to disregard my rank and play with lower-SR friends instead.

I stopped actively trying to climb in competitive during the "throw 4 dafran" era. I was low gold initially and climbed to plat super fast but then got dropped back to low gold through the sheer amount of throwers. I got the same thrower 5 games in a row, and a thrower in general for 35 out of 50 games during that season. Ever since I've only been doing placement matches for the comp points and I've climbed to low diamond. I'm sure I could get to masters or at least high diamond on dps and maybe low diamond on the other 2 but I can't be bothered because I care far too much about comp. If shit isn't perfect I get super toxic, it's not hard to have minimal coordination yet people refuse to
