Rika Usami. Among those who are world champion, none meet her measure. She is the greatest ever. A magnificent athlete.

I love Rika, but how is she the "greatest ever" when there are several women who have been the [WKF] world champion more times than her? Her first time at the world championships (2010) she won bronze (lost to Yohanna Sanchez and defending world champion Hoang Ngan Nyugen). Her second time (2012) she won gold. But there are several women who have won more gold, including at least three women who have been world champion four times. Can she really be the "greatest" when others have won multiple world titles and she's only won one? Can she really be the "greatest" if she's never battled it out with Atsuko Wakai, Yuki Mimura and Mei Nakayama? I think its only fair to say she was the greatest of her time, but not overall. Its like comparing an athlete from one era to era. Floyd Maywaether claims he's the greatest boxer because of his 50-0 record. But Julio Cesar Chavez went 89-0-1 before his first loss. Then there's Sugar Ray Robinson, Mohamed Ali, Roy Jones, etc. Who's the greatest there? Unless its possible of finding video of champions before Usami's time and doing a comparison that way its hard to really call any one even her the greatest ever I think.

Usami is just a different level. That 2012 Kata will never be surpassed. The control and passion were out of this world. It brings out emotions in me that I don’t understand. It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen / felt. Ever. I can’t really explain it.

@@barrettokarate they have a problem, and that is, Atsuko Wakai is goju ryu style, and Yuki Mimura is shotokan style. I am very sorry to say it but there is no participant who can compete with the more than 50 katas that the shito ryu style has, Chatanyara no Kusanku the best kata ever and neither of them can compete against that, but of course, we are talking on goddess levels.

Then you haven’t seen Atsuko Wakai. She was the 2000-2002 WKF Women’s champion. Before karate become mainstream. Her videos on KZbin don’t do her justice. You actually go buy the WKF world championships on DVD to buy it.

Thank you for the video. I am a brown belt karate Shotokan and Shito-Ryu and had since left Karate for almost two decade since school in pursuit of corporate rat race. I used to do Shotokan Karate, under Sensei Kingsley Johnson- don't know if you've heard of him, but the man was tough as iron, and used to drill kata, a single mistake, and you would get told off badly, or insulted- if not hit on the head with a bamboo stick, don't know if that was the best method, but is sure did get a-lot of gradings taking place, and seriousness, to succeed, I was one of the few, who continued, under the tremendous pressure, and got my black belt, around 2005!

All the women are admirable. I am always glad to see how much women have been able to accomplish in the Martial Arts. It makes me remember a time when great female Karateca's where paving the world for these young women. Those were though times, lots of blood and broken bones. There was only one division, we where considered marginal, couldn't even acknowledge we where women. We didn't "fight like women, we fought like men." ...and some of us were better.

Rika's only been a world champion once in 2012. Shimizu and Sanchez have won twice. Mei Nakayama has won it three times consecutively. Atsuko Wakai (1988, 1990, 1992, 1996) and Yuki Mimura (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004) are the all-time winningest champions with four each.

How come no one mentions Atsuko Wakai ? Atsuko Wakai is a living legend in female Kata world champ history, She immaculately showcased how to collect and summon energy and power from her legs and thighs, through her hips to the waist , and deliver the full force to the shoulders , upper arm s ,fore arms until the fists and knuckles.If u look at it in slow motions ,u 'd know what I mean.The rest of the champs are fast and more powerful but the connections and combinations of flexibility and strength are not as smooth and seamless as Atsuko.

I've mentioned her and Yuki Mimura (whose tied with most world titles with Wakai), but the Rika fanboys get all anally hurt. I love Rika, she's one of my all-time favorites, but people need to look at those that came before her. There's a reason why Mimura, Wakai and Mei Nakayama before them with three world titles ruled the kata world.
