Nice Vid!! Yes this is not an easy job and so underrated sometimes. Some don't understand the importance of a good mix. Another mistake young engineers make is putting plugins directly on the track instead of bussing. If you have delay on 4 tracks, make an aux track, name it, and send your signal through there. Also please people learn your shortcuts because it will help you do everything so much faster. When you're in a session, you don't want to be using the mouse all the time as we all know it can hurt your hand in the long run. Im an upcoming Mix Engineer & I learned some of this in class and the rest at home.

The headroom tip has really opened my eyes man, I always wondered why some beats sound impossible to rap or sing over because they seem to be the center of attention or too loud. This has helped me a lot i can't wait to make new music.

Hi I just started watching these videos. I'm new to the music industry and have been spending all my time developing my skills and watching tutorials and practicing and whatnot. It's been really frustrating bc everyone else I look at already has songs and records and videos and stuff. Hearing your #1 comment be that it's not easy, that one has to put time and effort in, made me feel so good. It really made me feel like I am on the right path. I'm going to follow you on instagram and keep watching your videos. They're great! Very detailed and specific. :)

I notice, a lot of the problems I have with my "unfinished" products and how you fixed them. I don't have an audio interface just yet so I can't use Pro Tools, stuck in Audacity atm and sometimes FL Mobile, not sure if you're familiar with them, or any one in the comments reading this, but please give any tips for working with those programs in the mean time. I’m not very sure if anyone had touch on the importance of gain staging, but that would be my tip. Assure that all of your levels are laid out well so your master bus will have enough headroom for a master or just loud enough to reach commercial level, but not surpass it (if you’re not looking to master).

#7 As technology evolves, so does the engineer. No matter how seasoned we are, we're all still learning at our own pace. However, please learn these fundamentals that Wayne is dropping. You're more than likely be remembered as a professional engineer who didn't F-U the session than the "Pro" with all of the tricks up his/her sleeve. They'll call you back for more work first. Peace!

Some other beginner mistakes are using too much reverb, not setting the tempo of the session, and the biggest one of all is relying too much on numbers. The biggest thing about mixing is the fact that not every session is the same. The same numbers don't work for every song. Gotta use your ears.

This is really cool input. Well if you know how your stuff should sound, you will see how much work you have to do to have all the tracks in balance. Headroom: maybe I am old. I love the way Leonard Cohen had his first four albums mixed. The voice is first, and all the other music is clear, but way below the voice. Or take Lee Perry's early Bob Marley recordings. Voice, bass, rest of the music. Now I'm gonna listen to the next points here.

Great Video!!!!I am guilty of doing all these bra,Thanks For Taking time out to show ya bra the proper way or WayneWay.I've been recording my vocals at about -16.5 on the pro tools fader.I need to change that, with a few other things.Go looking out, and keep up the good work.

I'm recording with the fader volume level at -16.5 and was peaking at -16 and -22.Sometimes at -15 or -10.But Now I know I have been recording to low like wavy way was saying.I have been using the compressor to boost my volume in my vocals.Even thou I have been using already mastered beets,I have not been turning them down to give me that head room, that I need for the vocal to sit in the beet better. So I will be trying wavyways tactics on my next track.

Right!!!!! That's exactly, what I learned watching wavyways videos. Those are some of the things I was talking about changing in my next session.I will be applying this bra for sure.-6 on the beet,-6 on the vocal and -6 on the master fader.I have been recording way to low and have not been leaving head room in the beets or vocals.Changing that as we speak.

if i have an instrumental with an open 16 bar verse ..is it possible that i can record one twelve bar verse & have my engineer cut the remaining four bars in that section to make a clean transition back into the chorus?

Your Vocal chain always seems very minimal. Do you not do subtractive EQing and other clean up methods before hand.... or is all that just in another bus/previous steps. if recording process is that clean that you don't have to do much pre mixing like that, then how do i get there? especially cuz i been in sessions where dudes record in the middle of the room no special booth and the mix is great. and the room i record in is the same as his... but i still use a make shift vocal booth

2:20 Does it even make sense to sell the limited/mastered beats? I still don't understand it. Not even mentioning the stems but just to mix the vocals over the beat which IS ALREADY mastered (probably not masterfully though), so then then when the song will get mastered the beat as a part of it will be actually mastered twice?) Is till can't believe we all are doing it these days 6:03 Why does it say "Trim mono"? 13:00 It sounds NICE man!!!
