Multi tools are pretty cool gadgets, I own a few of them. However, after years of hiking - where you carry all you gear - I have found that you don't need 'Tools' - especially pliers. The key is simple good planning and maintenance of your gear. The humble SAK is probably more than enough.

Huntsman is only $33 right now. I prefer the field master since the only difference is the Phillips bit over the corkscrew (I don't drink wine at all)

The Bibury seems like a killer value for camping specific tools. My EDC is a Victorinox Swiss Champ so I'm very biased. Maybe it's nostalgia but a SAK feels spiritually connected to the woods.

The SAK's do seem uniquely suited to outdoor treks! They are almost all great at outdoor carry it's hard to pick the best model.

My Swisschamp is more for urban EDC, although I like the fact that it would be good for any survival situation too. If I'm going outdoors I tend to opt for an alox model like the Farmer or Farmer X (both based on the old Soldier model) or the current Soldier 08 (one handed trekker), generally accompanied with a fixed blade.

They're all great tools in their own standard, quality & costs. We have our specific mod multitool for outback use. There will always be trade-offs no matter which one is chosen including ours. Cheers mate.

The Super Tool 300 or Surge are great for general purposes, if I was going camping I'd take the Wave too. I've used two pliers heads many times. Two plier heads are great for holding and twisting tie wire to traps. If the multitool doesn't have scissors like the Super Tool series, the wire cutters are good " makeshift" snips for cable ties and act like small pruners on small diameter branches.

Those are great tools. Good point about two plier heads coming in handy. That's one reason I really like the SOG Sync I belt buckle because it's always a backup emergency tool.

After wearing out quite a few of these things I'll stick to Leatherman and Victorinox. Gerbers were dependable up until the turn of the century, but not now. Those others are probably just knock-off junk from China. I carry the Victorinox Champ and Leatherman Signal in belt sheaths. If you're in a tight spot a multi-tool that doesn't fail is worth the higher price. The Signal comes in a variety of colours and a couple times Leatherman discounted the unpopular colours that they discontinue by a substantial amount. The one I have was 50% off. I also have another sheath that holds the Leatherman Crunch, their bit kits, and the extenders. I carry that only when motorized vehicles are in use. The Streamlight Microstream USB pocket light fits the Victorinox sheath for the Champ, just clip it on the side, the sheath flap holds it in place.

nice video my friend, i think you could add leatherman sidekick and roxon spark to the list. Also, can you make an edc version of it? I'm also commenting on the translation.

The Leatherman sidekick with the woodsaw and the Roxon Spark with the whistle ferro rod are great options. I think the Leatherman Bond or the Leatherman Curl could be great EDC options with some slight modding.

I like a good variety of tools i carry a leatherman surge with a ferro rod in the side of the sheath, i also sometimes carry a victorinox farmer x alox and a pair of small pair of knipex cobra pliers.

I've tried that out too, the Farmer X with my Knipex Cobra XS. Good for camping, the pliers are a great pot grip lol although that's not all I use them for. In the city I sometimes carry the Vic Climber with the Cobra XS, or even Swisschamp with Cobra XS for a full toolset for all kinds of tasks.

In any discussion about whether to take a pliers-based multi-tool or a multi-tool knife, there is one serious question that has to be answered first! Is a pliers a NECESSITY or just a nice-to-have? There is no definitive answer to this, as there are too many variables and personal preferences to take into account. Multi-tool knives have the advantage that they are ergonomically much better for heavy use over the Leatherman style multi-tools (mostly regarding sharpish edges). It all comes down to the REAL need for a pliers. Once you have answered this question, one can then compare candidates. 6:05 Victorinox Huntsman. It really is a pity that you decided to include this as the candidate for the tool for "outdoors/camping" as there are other very strong candidates out there (assuming this is the tool one wants to take). For example, the Hercules and the Work Champ both have a far better range of tools, and the Ranger Grip series are also excellent for this purpose. Both these categories are slightly larger with sturdier tools that are much more useful. Even in the shorter version, the Swiss Champ is the Big Daddy! Extremely hard to beat!

The problem is that the companies, excepting only Victorinox, do not ask real users for necessary features. All except the Vic in that last are pretty much junk. They want to make survival tools, but have no clue what tools are necessary for survival, so they guess. The surge is better than all of those except the Vic for survival simply because it has the t-shank adaptor, that's it. The DL30 you have in other videos blows even the surge away, as the one flat point screwdriver can be ground into a chisel, and a nice 1/4" ferro rod can easily be modified to fit into the bit holder so it won't fall out when not being used. Also, different blades for different purposes can be found to cut wood, metal, bone, and stone for the t-shank. Outdoor tools need to be based around modification and manipulation of wood, bone, stone hide, cordage, meat, and metal. A screwdriver, for instance, is a waste of weight and space. A soft steel pressure flaker bit or two would be awesome, and easy. Right now, if you want a good survival/outdoor multitool, one doesn't exist. You have to mod the heck out of something existing to make what you can get.

Leatherman Surge. The best multi tool out there. I started with a SOG Paratool 20 years ago. It was Meh at best. Just got SOG's Surge competitor, their PowerAccess Deluxe. Not as good. Not as well made or engineered, or manufacturers. Rought casting surfaces, rough cutting lines for the file. No diamond coated side. No scissor, redundant screwdrivers instead of Ddinf in good tools.

Outdoors/Camping you want a 111mm liner-locking Victorinox knife with a saw probs one literally called "outdoortool" (discontinued) so now "outrider" and as the 91mm outdoorsman is also a discontinued model to fit your metric of "their outdoor tool" should have gone the OUTRIDER. Grind the locking screwdriver into a locking chisel and you are good to go with a full bladed, all day handle, none to heavy knife with some extras.

I’m looking at the Gerber Armbar Scout as an alternative to the Victorinox Huntsman for the grandkids. Not as many tools, but I think the locking main blade would be safer than a non-locking blade. I have two other Armbar tools and rather like the main blade. The hammer, cap lifter, pry tool has other uses too, including hooking and lifting pots.

I like the idea of an all in one but for anyone that’s ever started a fire w a ferro rod knows you need hefty spark and chunk when flicking down I’d rather carry a rod the length of the tool in the pouch w it kitted one of those things that can only be experienced I really dig the roxons snips. Gerbers center drive I carried for work mostly for that screw driver I found their pliers that slide out the top to be seriously lacking grip strength the goat tools that’s modular checks my boxes but only if I buy all the attachments I want to see it have I wish you could pick what you wanted in your multi w goat

Just go and buy a handful if new BIC lighters for $6 bucks. Use the ferro rod if you lost everyone of your lighters. I smoke cigars and I use a cigar torch. A quad nozzle cigar torch is antiney blowtorch and will light up the wettest twigs. Go fill up the torch wirh butane and back it up with a couple of BIC lighters, and you're good.

I ditched Leatherman.the quality juat isnt there anymore, they rust like a MF, and theyre far too expensive. Between you and maxlvledc, you convinced me to get a roxon flash. Was disappointed in how loose it was, but i tightened it up and now it's my favorite. Sometimes i even leave my sak at home.

Just soak your Leatherman in a vinegar bath for three to four days. It will eat the rust right off. If you have the Signal, it may fade the plastic finish and remove the driver bit, if you like the black coating. It won't hurt your multitool at all. I have bought many used Leatherman's to save on money and they look like new. I suggested this tip to Mr. Kincaid, of this channel. He will verify the vinegar works very effectively.

I have three Leatherman multitools. They're all stainless steel. One of them sits in a car door and has through three cars over twenty years in salted road country. They only ever get a drop of oil on the joints. None of them have any rust or pitting. There are plenty of counterfeits around. The one in the car is one of the original Supertools, no number to it, made in the 1990's, no rust anywhere on it, ever.
