I moved out for work. I graduated college and went to DC. Would love to get back to Michigan one day but I will say that the few cities we’ve got up in the mitten don’t compare to these east coasters. Walkability and warmth are huge bonuses to DC. It’s 58°f here on 11/20/23.
@LivinginDetroitMi

Yeah warmth is certainly not something we have! Although we are in the 40's this week in SE Michigan. I'm actually born and raised in the U.P. and have lived down here in SE Michigan for just shy of 10 years. If you were to move back to Michigan, which cities would draw you back?

That old excuse weather. It's cold in new York city population 8.6m, Chicago 2.6m, Philly 1.6m etc. They don't beautify it like other places with landscaping and bright lights. And also no mass transit like the other places that I mentioned, all the things people love. Purposely I believe. If you notice all these other places that people move to are gorgeous, LA, Miami, Vegas, etc. They don't put that care into Michigan, well Detroit

The main reason is because prices have been jacked up so high on land and homes that nobody can afford to own one anymore unless you're filthy rich! Also people are beginning to realize that there are states that you can live in that don't charge state tax so that you get to keep more of your paycheck to cover your bills instead of going into debt.

After spending my entire life in Michigan, and after 21 years in Traverse City, back in 2021 I retired and moved to South Carolina. Cost of living is so much cheaper here! Selling my home in the spring of 2026. #1. Blue State = zero growth. Detroit is still Detroit like it or not. I will not take my family down to Detroit period. Even if Detroit was a beautiful city, there is no fast transit to get us in and out of the city. #2. Weather is brutally bad. True Michiganders will tell you they love the 4 seasons. That is a lie. 99% of Michiganders stay locked up in their homes during the brutal winter months. Sometime in April you’ll start seeing children come out. Summer can be VERY MILD where the highs only get into the low to mid 70s. Not good boating weather or beach weather at all. Often the hot 80 degree weather doesn’t show up until July. Better love overcast and no sun. Going 7-14 days in a row with zero sun happens every year. You’ll get some sunshine and then back into another 7 days of no sun. Depressing. #3. Warm weather states promote healthier lifestyle as you are not locked in your house for 7-8 months of the year. The Red city and state I’m moving to has farmers markets open all year round, sunshine and heat all year round, beaches open all year round, boating all year round, weather that promotes “active movement”. So much more to do all year round in beautiful weather. #4 Costs of higher level education is SIGNIFICANTLY lower compared to Michigan. My son is graduating right now, the cost of out of state tuition in some of the southern states is the same as in state tuition in Michigan. Very sad. Both my sons will be going to Universities in the south, they want out also. #5 - Nothing more fun than carting 2 to 3 large garbage bags of cans and bottles to supermarkets and Costo. Michigan makes you pay $0.10 per can/bottle. Then you have the luxury to bag up 100’s of stick bottles and cans and spend tons of time feeding one bottle at a time into a machine just to get your $0.10 per can/bottle back. I HATE THIS. We work and take care of our families all week, weekend comes, and you have to take cans/bottles back to the grocery store. At Costco, I’ve waited up to 30 mins in line before I can start my process of feeding cans into a machine. STATE IS BLUE.. Going to a DARK RED STATE! BYE BYE

Thanks for the in-depth comment! Would love to be of assistance in 2026! We are sitting in May right now with 80’s! I would actually prefer in the 70’s myself. I lived in Holland/Zeeland from 1957 to 2015 and I moved to Southern Alabama. While there I owned an 1850 sq. ft 3 br 2 ba home in a subdivision and paid $1,500 in property tax every 6 months. I bought a 2200 sq. ft. 3 br 3ba home on 16 acres and pay $400 per year property tax PER YEAR. So in 10 years I will save about $20,000 on tax alone. I don't need a snow blower, or snow tires, a snow shovel or even an Ice scraper for the car. I will NEVER move back to that Democratic hell hole you call Michigan.

correction to your video we do not have 4 seaons. We used to. we have spring and winter. Summer does not exist in michigan anymore. We are the cloudiest state in america. People in michigan lack vitamin D and they are hunkered in there homes all year long doing nothing but eating and gaining weight. The entire state shuts down at 10 pm. All we have is these little old towns to go see and walk around in. Anyone I talk to who also moved out of this state tells me how happy they are and how there lives changed the minute they left this death trap called michigan. the governor has made it impossible to send your kids to public schools. zero jobs and zero chance of opening a business and being successful due to the fact that eveyone who lives in michigan lives in the tri county area so if your plan is to open a mexican restaraunt or a cell phone store good luck because there probably is one across the street or walking distance to the other ones

I live in Michigan and love the seasons. For those that blame government... Michigan congress has been in control by Republicans for 40 years. The Governor has changed parties back and forth, but congress hasn't. Dems have only controlled congress for a couple years. For those that say they moved because of high taxes or low wages are simply putting blame on the wrong party. Some people prefer to live in states that don't pay taxes, but get flooded out every year. Doesn't sound cheap to me. Others like states that have low taxes, but take away your rights to your own body. What's that worth? Michigan has it's faults, but when you look at where it falls in the cost of living... it's pretty good. And you can go in the water, and not get eaten.

There's good and bad with the politics. People moving to the south don't properly understand just how bad the healthcare is down here and you tend to see that more with red states in my experience. I've spent most of my life in the south with a 6 year stint in the Midwest and i definitely wanna be back in the midwest more specifically the great lakes region. My major is accounting and literally ALL the great lakes states ranked better than Georgia for accountants. Yeah i could go to Atlanta but uh uh. Atlanta has a lot more competition for jobs compared to Detroit or Chicago or traverse City or even Columbus so not only is getting q job harder but very high probability it won't be sufficient for the cost of living in metro Atlanta.
