i love how you are explaining why you are doing each step instead of just saying "filter cutoff at 68 hz, resonance should be about here" an flying by everything. I'm not trying to make a copy of their bass, i want to learn how its done and what each step is impacting!

I forgot to mention; also don't use unison for bass sounds that need to contain solid lows, It's the same as combining oscillators. Big phase problems! Apologies guys for the late upload and "LIES?" edit mistake in the intro 🤣🤣 , the video got out of hand! I was going to do sound design and processing in the same video , but I ran out of time :(. Tune in next week for pt2 👊🙏

I love your channel. Seriously, it’s been the best production channel. Why you may ask? The way you break down the theory, the way you explain and walk through things, the logic behind the decisions. Nothing is left unturned. You’re a natural teacher - and it shows through your ease of explanation. Which also gives insight to your knowledge and experience. Thank you.

I don’t know if you go through these older comments, but I’ve watched this video so many times. As a total beginner I’ve tried to recreate these basses with stock Ableton instruments. And by following your explanations to create these sounds, outside of vital, it has totally gotten me out of the “I have no idea what I’m doing” mindset when opening a synth.

This is so great and the best timing - I literally am working on this now and I saw last week's video yesterday and now this today haha. I am really happy I found this channel, you are very good ex plaining and demoing these things in a way that is easy to understand, not boring, but you don't distract the viewer and you aren't trying to show off, you just know what you're doing and it's educational and fun to watch these. I recently upgraded from 15 year old KRK Rokkits to Adam A7V, got room treatment, and now I found these. Needless to say, my tech house bass is sounding WAAAAY better now. :)
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Aww thanks 🙏👊. Yeah room treatment is the key! I learned that the hard way in my first bedroom studio. I was getting paid well to mix as a side hustle so I upgraded my baby tannoys to £1600 Adam p33 (which I still use to this day). And I kid you not it didn't sound any different. That's when I developed the rule of thumb "spend as much on treatment as monitors"

Oh good question, that one might not be native to vital. I do have several free packs installed. (Echo sound works is a good one) I also copied the wavetable libraries from Serum and Massive and ableton's own Wavetable over and I think it's from one of those. If you don't own those plugins Google is your friend for the wavetables 😉

@@justletmeplaygodamnit9355 well the whole thing really, but from about 12:00 I explain that the drums for all those track plots were just shared generic ones between all of the different tracks, and I only swapped 1 sample here or there which I identified were key to the groove. Moral of the story is practically anything will work if you learn to recognise groove, and sound function. Seeking specific samples is never going to work out unless you're remaking the same thing, as charging the context around a sound changes the sound itself.

do you recommend using vital or serum I currently have serum and I am taking the Syntorial course to learn synths more and the syntorial has serum tutorials after you finish to apply what you learned from syntorial to serum but vital seems so much more simple to use

Vital is free just go grab it and have a play. I personally prefer it. You should be able to apply everything from your syntorial course over to vital it has feature parity as far as I'm aware (everything except the dedicated sub oscillator as far as I remember) You can even copy over the wave tables from serum to vital when you learn where they are stored!

How do you send the Envelope to Oscillator Pitch as done at 08:00, but in serum? I've been following along able to do everything else in Serum but this one has me stumped.

Drag an envelope (any other than env 1) up to top right of an oscillator, make sure course pitch is selected. And make sure the modulation is in the positive direction.

this might be a really stupid question but would you still sidechain your bass to your kicks? working on the noizu sound right now. i feel like if you're adding the small things like the pitch envelope it wouldn't be able to be heard on the kick hits if you sidechained your bass, or would I be incorrect?

You're right. It's always a compromise because at master level with these guys the kick will usually hit peak. so something has to give, those pitch envelopes etc still matter in between kicks though and depending on the release character of the sound and the kick shape / relationship psychoacoustically you may still perceive the same sound behind the kick even if it is ducked for a moment. Have a look at my bass processing video I talk about it there some more

Can you explain exactly what you did at 8:05? Or perhaps I should go to a more beginner video. Tks.

Sorry I didn't make this clear. I'm adjusting the amount envelope 3 sends to pitch. But via a macro, to make it easier to adjust the pitch to all oscillators at the same time. Vital has a 'quirk' where if you drag an envelope to pitch, and then drag the same envelope to the next oscillator's pitch, for some reason the range is different. So I prefer to re-adjust all the ranges on the matrix tab, its just easier to do all 3 at once with the macro knob. hope that make sense. let me know if you need a video

Hey mate what drums are you using here?

Various bits. I use a plugin called xo to help finding samples in my libraries faster, I just listen to the reference track and try to pick kicks, claps and hats closest to that. For top loops like shakers and percussion this had a mark knight loop and defected loop in there I think. I recommend splice or loopmasters , but you still have to train your ears to recognize what sounds are going to work in the context of your track and the reference.

Thanks Carlo! I was looking at the set up for YT members, and it seemed like Patreon, talking about setting up percs etc. I just don't have the time at the moment to promise anything extra to viewers right now. That's why I thought the simple kofi donation was a better idea.

@@Bthelick case in point many of the creators people listen to on here aren’t professional musicians, just pro ad and video makers. Not always possible to do both.
