It’s worth it. I have 3. Costs about what a nice pistol does. Ask yourself how many times have you used your pistol in self defense versus how many times you’ve been out in wet cold weather. You’ll use this infinitely more than anything else in your kit. It’s the finest wool available.

@@sigma3survivalschool I understand what you’re saying and agree on the frequency of use I also understand having to turn a profit and that it’s top quality but the price tag is still ludicrous and that’s my problem with a lot of American produced stuff we are expected to assume because it’s made here that it somehow worth the price gouging I could make an item of that same quality on my sewing machine or hand stitch it myself it’s hard for me to look at gucci American gear and pay 3 times reasonable value simply because of apple pie,baseball,and bald eagles I’d buy a lot more stuff American made if it wasn’t a price gouge from hell and yeah I don’t expect the price to match Chinese shit either but the “American made” industry is capitalizing on patriotism to justify ridiculous prices for everything

American made companies need to think about being competitive to some degree because gucci only will not build us a manufacturing base we almost produce nothing for ourselves and if everything is gucci with a high price that isn’t a prescription for longevity or diversified national manufacturing America is putting itself out of business slowly and in many ways we deserve that

It's less about pride and more about simple economics. When a company's overhead is higher the product is going to cost more. I get it though, money is tight for a lot of us and trying to maximize what you get for your dollar isn't something I would fault anyone for.

I agree with you. But I happen to know there profit margins and they aren’t high. They are using a suit grade quality wool unlike any other manufacturer. There are a lot of anorak companies out there and they are all using cheap rough scratchy grade wool and charging around $400. Weatherwool used ramboillet merino. Which is very soft and you can wear directly on your skin and it feels soft. Other companies don’t offer that level of quality. And you can’t find a foreign comparison in quality. We did a video series on it years ago that’s on the channel

My favorite is my great kilt. Next is my wool sweater. The snow don't melt fast on the wool sweater. I have a wool blanket that I use too much. Wool mitten gloves are nice. Gators smell after a day of work in the cold. I like knee high wool socks to go over long johns. Helps keep things in place while working.

What I want is a full weight lynx weatherwool great kilt, I'll request the widest stock they have hopefully as close to 60 inches or more as possible, 5 yards, width to the selvedge, and hem the ends. It'll be my blanket, additional cover item, outerwear, even a hammock, etc!!

I love wool. I have many wool items from socks to blankets to hats, pants, shirts. One of my favorite items is my Army OD green wool scarf issued with the wool watch cap. In the field I took the scarf, and split the end open slightly ( GASP) and pulled it over my head, and wrapped the excess around my neck as a scarf/hat one piec combo. I could wrap it around my face, neck etc. Get yourself a Army Wool OD Green Scarf. Very useful item!

Used a weather wool for 5 years live in Yorkshire UK hunted for 50 plus year's running dogs is my game your fully protected put a ullfrotte underneath job done lamping is a very physical discipline wish they were made decades ago. Dachstein wool Arktis gloves fit nicely in the Hestra gloves. Sleeping Indian Wool on par with WeatherWool. Brynje wool mesh is amazing. Buffalo Wool Co makes the best socks and fingerless gloves and the Muskox blend hats are also wonderful.

another base layer to look at is all the Kuiu ULTRA Merino 145 products. I own the top and bottoms, don't have any complaints. Maybe not the best for extreme cold but for lows in the 20-30's work great.

I use Alpaca. Its warmth to weight ratio is warmer and lighter than wool. It is hypoallergenic and does not smell when wet. Lanolin can be washed out.

2:22 “good in freezing temperatures all the way up to 70 degrees.” If you went for an even moderately strenuous hike wearing that anorak in 70 degree weather, you would be roasting after 30 seconds. There is no jacket, fleece, anorak or any other piece of outerwear that will be truly comfortable below freezing but also at 70 degrees. That’s why clothing, including wool, comes in different weights. You are attributing magical properties to this anorak. I hike in a thin wool t-shirt when it’s 70. Unless you plan on sitting completely still in the shade with a constant 20 mph wind, you’re going to burn up wearing even the mid weight Weather Wool anorak in 70 degree temps.

Hey Rob, when you mentioned that the lynx color has a better loft to it than other colors, were you referring only to the other garments in full weight? I got a midweight anorak and it’s in drab color and it’s quite versatile but I did notice the fabric had some patches of it where some of the wool fibers were visible close up. Not sure if that affects the loft but I’m wondering what garments you’ve used and if this is what you’re referring to. If so then, if I were to buy more weatherwool in the future I’ll probably go with lynx.

Lynx because of its color is weaved differently somehow and seems to have more loft and warmth. I actually prefer OD green color. But the lynx seems to be higher quality material to me

ALL our FullWeight and ALL our MidWeight Fabrics are woven in Lynx Pattern. The only difference is the color of the yarn. We have identical specs regardless of color BUT the spinning, weaving and finishing have a lot of variables and a lot of art and there are going to be small differences batch to batch. --- Ralph

Hot and wet environments you typically always want to choose a fast drying synthetic material. Wool isn’t optimal for hot climates. Rail riders and first lite make some great synthetic options

What would you recommend for cold wet environments when it comes to pants? Wool base layer under regular pants? I know there are some entities that make pants with 50% or so wool content. I prefer synthetic pants for outer wear. Mostly wear Fjallraven. But I just got some new first lite pants that are amazing and I like them better than my Fjallraven pants. First lite does synthetic as well as lightweight wool pants

If by pants you mean what we call in the UK 'trousers' (outerwear) then I've just watched a YT video on the Micklagaard Hamra Professional wool trousers. I think there quite expensive though.

@davemc9268 Yes, I've seen a few options and they are a bit pricey. I'd like to stick with natural materials as much as I can. They seem to make less noise when you move and I'm not a fan of residual chemical exposure you may find in synthetic materials. For really cold and wet weather a wool base layer with synthetic pants/trousers over that and a hard shell outer layer if things get really bad is what I had been doing. Just looking for options.

There isn’t really any cheap wool other than European military surplus that’s super scratchy and old. If you want cheap you’re gonna have to go with synthetic options. They do well also. Just stink really quickly in the field

Good info, but as far as I know most processed wool (and pretty much all modern wool is processed) no longer has lanolin in it. Doesn’t take away from its efficacy though, I’m a confirmed woolite for the past 45+ years : )

I mentioned my mother in an earlier comment, I spoke to her last night. I asked her if she could make me a shemagh out of wool. She said no because they are woven not knitted, which I’m sure I knew before hand. Going by your info I said you can no longer buy woollen ones, of course you can she said. She spent a lot of years living and working in Scotland, around Perthshire and Aberdeenshire. Apparently any tartan manufacturer will make one, she suggested “Lochcarron of Scotland” as a place to start looking, sure enough they sell lambs wool stoles, which is basically a shemagh. Your family name might even have its own tartan you can have it made in.

Just had a look myself, they do a fine Merino one, £68 what ever that is in USD I don’t know, but not bad for Merino. If you don’t already have a family tartan you can design your own, you could have a Sigma tartan. Edit : Just ordered one in Black Watch tartan, 70cm x 200cm. I’m going to sew a seam down the centre and have two at 70x100. I’ll gift one to my mate, his old man is ex Black Watch. Might be cheaper your side of the pond to just buy a ream of fabric and cut to your own size. Worth dropping them an email.

Weather wool is fantastic, however if your in any truly cold weather it can’t hold a candle to Boreal Anoraks…. I own both.

Meh. I’ve used both. And the only reason the boreal is warmer is because of the way it’s built. Especially around the neck line. It holds heat better for colder conditions. But I’d rather use another tool such as gaiter or shemagh if I need that. Weather wool excels in all temps under 70 degrees whereas the boreal is only good below 40 degrees. And it’s scratchy and not comfortable in the skin. Check out micklagaard anoraks. Just found them and they look amazing
