Another controver change was Tower of Terror being changed to Guardians of the Galaxy. People freaked out about that one
@elainesage63464 жыл бұрын
I'm still upset because I never got to ride it in its original form. Yeah, I know, the WDW one is still there, but the one at DCA was under construction while I was there. To a ten-year-old who loved spooky things (whose love of the spooky has grown even into adulthood), this massive, singed structure looked like Candyland. I loved watching the old Twilight Zone and still do. But I was never able to return to the park, and now it's the Guardians of the Galaxy. Sure, the ride mechanics haven't changed, but the theme was the big draw for me. I do, however, count myself lucky in that I was able to see Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion before their most major changes, as the addition of film characters in the former and the change to Constance in the latter happened in '06 and I was at the park in October of '03. I missed the Tower of Terror opening by seven months..

Correction: There are more than two songs from Song of the South featured in Splash Mountain. The three songs you hear in the ride are: How Do You Do?, Everybody Has a Laughin' Place, and Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah. In the queue and Critter Country's music loop, you hear instrumentals of many other songs from the film such as: Song of the South, Uncle Remus Said, Let the Rain Pour Down, and Sooner or Later. Also, while I can see that you're being quite optimistic about the new ride, I think you should reserve judgment on whether it is good until AFTER the retheme happens. Let's not forget some of the terrible rethemes that Disney has done such as Stitch's Great Escape and Under New Management.

They're not planning on reusing it. The proposal port forth last year is to remove the animatronics and make it screen based to save costs.
@SkeleJade3 жыл бұрын
@@richardjones2054 Yeah I disagree. Disney’s incorporating many screens to make the background more immersive and interactive. However many of the animatronics in the ride will be re-skinned to another ride, or dismantled for parts. Audio animatronics are a massive Disney staple and will continue to stay in the ride. Brer Bear’s parts and mechanics are so large that using an equally clumsy and large character like Louis makes sense, while keeping Walt’s saying that “if you take out the old, leave part of it behind”. If it were made to be all screen, the ride wouldn’t be successful. There was already an uproar about splash mountain, taking out any and all animatronics would just be hellfire. Ride remodeling is expensive as it is. Disney can afford reskinning an animatronic or two.

It’s sad that the animatronics in there were recycled already from America Sings, so they might not be used ever again. It will be missed, but I’m just thankful I won’t have to forego the great drop at the end
@CosplayCore4 жыл бұрын
I’m pleased that Princess and the Frog is finally getting some love but at the same time, I grew up with Splash Mountain, too. I never liked the drop at the end (and I’m glad to finally see someone else who feels like I did) but I am a little saddened by it leaving for different reasons than most would expect. Like someone else here said, we likely won’t see the America Sings characters ever again and that in itself is sad because those are a great piece of Distory (Disney History). However, I am more saddened by how many people are just outright assuming that Song of the South was meant to be racist. I know quite a few people that saw that film as children and came away from it thinking that African American people were awesome and lovable as a whole and that’s a good thing. Because everyone needs and deserves love and respect. The film is about a little boy, Johnny, who has come with his mother to stay at his grandmother’s plantation. During his stay, little Johnny learns that the best and most interesting people can come in any color, shape or size and that just because you’re small doesn’t mean that you can’t still have a big voice (lesson learned from hearing the Br’er Rabbit tales). I will admit that the film does reflect some of the common images and ideas of the time in which it was made (little Johnny really didn’t need to have a “mammy” but at the same time, the one scene he has with her is very touching and shows the two like close family). But out of the three friends Johnny makes at his grandmother’s, two of them are people of color and Johnny’s moments with both of them really do promote the notion that people are people no matter what they look like or where they come from. He loves them simply because they’re his good friends and that should matter a lot more than people act like it does. Not to mention the fact that if you do your research on the Br’er Rabbit takes, you’ll find that they were all created by African American people in the South, with Br’er Rabbit, the small and meek yet quick and quick-witted, representing themselves as a whole and Br’er Fox often representing the obstacles they had to overcome. The stories where Br’er Rabbit outsmarts Br’er Fox are allegories for hope and rallying together for people of color. Now, not only does Br’er Rabbit win out in all of the stories that Disney chose to animate into the film but I believe that Uncle Remus also succeeds in both teaching kids to imagine their own creative stories but he also succeeds in showing a little boy and a whole audience that what we should aim for the most is love. His love and care for this little boy brought him to new friends and a boundless imagination for stories and definitely showed little Johnny and some kids in the audience (I’ve met a few people who were) that appearances really shouldn’t define what you think of someone. Case in point, my own mother. She was a child when Disney last released Song of the South for a theatrical run. My grandmother really dislikes African American people because she was raised in a period in America where they were still forced to sit at the back of the bus in the smoking areas. So she raised my mom telling her all these bad things about people of color. She took my mom to go see Song of the South when she was very small and my mom has always told me that that day changed her mind forever against the stories her mom was telling her. She saw the very lovable Uncle Remus through Johnny’s eyes and since then, my mom has tried her best to be anti-racist. Now, a lot of people argue that the film is racist because of several things (“mammy” imagery, the tar baby which was left in to stay true to the original tales and the fact that “white” people made the film and used “ideals” against the Post-Reconstruction background) and several I have met have told me “well, the movie doesn’t show Johnny as an adult after his parents have raised him to be racist”. But honestly, unless there’s a sequel to a film, whatever happens after the story is told is kind of not relevant to the story that was MEANT to be told. If it was, we would either have a longer film or a sequel. But the meaning of Song of the South is the peaceful relationship between Johnny and Uncle Remus. People need to just love and trust each other like they do. I’ll agree that the “mammy” imagery in the film isn’t good but I like the scene where Johnny and Tilly (its been a few years since I’ve watched so I may get some names wrong since I’m pretty bad at names) are talking about the frogs is endearing just a little bit. But attacking the tar baby scene and saying that the film is racist for being idealized seem a little forced to me. For one thing, like I already said, the tar baby was left in more than likely so as not to derail or in any way mess with the original tale. For another, the idealism could be seen as racist but I think that it could also be understood under the same definition that “ideal” has in the dictionary. An “ideal” is often something we should aim for. Like being that trusting and loving toward someone else regardless of physical appearances and their associated assumptions is an ideal but it’s one that people should aim for. It’s a positive ideal.

You forgot Journey into the Imagination. That should be number one or at least top five. That is one of the most terrible mess ups that ever happened at Disney. They took an excellent steampunk original ride with incredible animatronics and turned it into a fart joke. The work also took so long that the original animatronics were damaged completely and can no longer be re-created people have been asking for a restoration of the ride ever since but it’s just not possible because of the poor management of the entire projects.

I'd rather they replace Winnie-the-Pooh with Princess And Frog and, like David wrote, leave Splash Mountain as it is. There is no racism in Splash Mountain, and its movie, "Song Of The South", is about the kindly Uncle Remus telling funny stories to help the kids understand the human condition while their parents are potentially divorcing, NOT about how much they loved slavery. Once again, Disney gave in to the haters, and every time they do, it makes Disneyland weaker.

I like the princess and the frog movie, don't get me wrong but, I just feel like it'd be shameful to get rid of such an iconic ride. My biggest issue with the Splash Mountain retheme is the fact that PatF has no place in Frontierland, a land based on cowboys and the 1800s West (and South by extent), perhaps unless the new ride has a more Southern aesthetic in Magic Kingdom and takes place in a marsh or something
@jackob.graphic51434 жыл бұрын
The new pirates scene is actually trash though. A gun wielding pirate talking about how much they love rum isn’t a much better character for kids to look up to. My problem is with the dialogue. I like Redd. I'm okay with the changes. But for her dialogue to just be spur-of-the-moment puns based on the original dialogue from the scene (thereby reminding anyone who remembers the old scene that it's been changed while simultaneously confusing new riders with awkward dialogue that's referencing something they've never seen) just bad taste, lack of thought. I think they should keep the changes (maybe get rid of one of the Jack Sparrows) and simply rerecord the dialogue with a cohesive original scene.

I am torn on the Splash Mountain one. I am an old Dog so I do remember watching Song of the South. and the most up-beat song for kids was Zippity doo dah it was put on every Disney Song album they released and was at least one of the first 3 songs listed on them. I will say the movie did show for the first time a sort of point of view that was not avilable at the time. but still a movie for kids so it was not dark for the day. but did not over simplify what was what. over all an older man.. an older Black man teaching life lessons to a couple of privilaged white kids. should be the take a way. that you can learn from others and understand the teachings. how life throws things at you, how you act ether positive or negative is up to you. and in the end would it not be better to be positive. that what song of the south and the stories of "uncle Remus" was getting at. back to splash mountain, the princess and the frog should have their own tie in. i say don't get rid of the toys and the song zippity doo dah.give it at least a small space some where near by.

I think that the re-themeing of the ride is long overdue. There are racist undertones in the original film it was based on, so even if the ride is loosely tied it doesn't look good for Disney. Princess and the Frog is a great film that, to be frank, should've gotten a ride or themed restaurant a long time ago. To be honest, I think this is one of the best changes Disney has ever made, right next to the re-themeing of California Screamin' and Tower of Terror.
@dawg8974 жыл бұрын
@@madhatterholley one can find "racist undertones" in anything for example the fake "OK" meaning white power. even if you turn your hand upside down it still does not spell wp. its mP upside down, right side up its Wb. backwards its qm or dw still can't get WP. not even deslexia can get wp out of it. the only way, is to have a racist mind in the first place to pretend its real. now over the years i do know many movies that where overtly racist and cruel. Song of the south did not hide it, but toned it down. but it was after all it was to be a positive message not a negative one unlike so many others they are not complaing about. not saying it was right, no its not. but the story had a positive message taught by the blacks to the white kids. as a kid i knew several older blacks that where kind to all us kids and we listen to their stories. and as kids we respected any kind adult round. if we did not our parents would hear about it and give us a whooping for the disrespect shown to any adult. no matter the color of their skin. I think its the positive nature of the story that is the problem for it is not showing just the cruel and hate side all the time. for everyone in this argument forgets it was white people fighting other white people for blacks to be free.

There’s one thing that sets apart all the other controversial changes from Splash Mountain - undue external pressure. Disney has had to aggressively review every aspect of its Parks and Resorts division, putting other projects on hold, but yet they still are giving precedence to a haphazard change like this. Let’s not forget how notoriously slow they are from announcement to opening of new attractions.. so much for a beloved ride being a real thorn in their side.

@dannyjaed4 жыл бұрын
star and fox That’s a good point. Many of the animatronics used at Disneyland were recycled from America Sings, while at Disney World most of the animatronics were made for its version of the ride so they are of a little bit newer vintage. Another version of Splash Mountain exists at Tokyo Disneyland, but they’re not closing the ride. I wonder why. It’s clear that with the timing of the announcement, that this was not an entirely internal decision that was made, and why it’s understandably outraged a lot of fans of the parks.

I would strongly disagree with the fact that we don't go to Disney for historical accuracy, I would mostly put it as, Walt wanted us to learn about the past, and better the future, but people from the 90's to the present just can't handle history not being PG friendly, and truthful regardless of their feelings, and that's one of the reasons why Disney strayed from historical accuracy, not just because some people wanted to escape reality. Still love the channel, I just don't agree with that statement, due to how it betrays, Walt's original desire to inform, and entertain, and not just entertain with no lesson to go along with it. I still think it's ironic that in order to be more racially sensitive, they want to replace Brer Rabbit/Bear/Fox, characters with roots in traditional African folktales, with basically a white story in black clothing. If it was up to me, I would've tried to make new media with Brer Rabbit/Fox/Bear that isn't problematic and maybe even delves deeper into African and/or American folktales. Then you not only create more interest in characters that are basically orphaned from their source movie, but also get people who never rode the ride interested in... riding the ride. Also this change is very likely to get axed. Disney's bottom line isn't looking very great and they've already canceled a bunch of high-profile ride renovations, not to mention demand for Splash Mountain merchandise is higher than ever thanks to the announcement, so I wouldn't be surprised if that refurb gets cancelled too

I grew up with the ride like many and personally I don't think it should be changed. Besides what are they gonna do with the animatronics? Some of the animatronics came from the previous attraction "America Sings" and was a great way to honor a once magical ride. As Americans it feels like we can't talk about the issues of our southern past without some controversy. The idea is to learn from it. It's why some schools still make you read "Of Mice and Men" or "Huckleberry Finn" even though those books do bring up racial slurs and racial problems.

I still think Elizabeth Swan should've been there instead of the Red head Pirate...showing her speech from World's End and to yell "Hoist the colours" with her Singapore pirate crew by her side.

@TherealRNOwwfpooh4 жыл бұрын
@@ThrilltimeHeadache But why? The New Orleans connection doesn't carry over to Florida since New Orleans Square is replaced with American colonial Liberty Square & is where The Haunted Mansion is located, meanwhile Pirates is in adjacent Adventureland & Splash Mountain is in Frontierland, because Critter Country doesn't outright exist at Walt Disney World.

Forgot to mention, that most of the people who say that the SOTS or splash is racist, never seen the movie
@kaykay37724 жыл бұрын
The film took place after the Reconstruction Era, after the abolishing of slavery. However, slavery was still legal in the south and people didn't like how they portrayed the life of a slave. You'll have to go on Wiki to read more. The movie's called Song of the South.
@luckyhair_mike19884 жыл бұрын
Kay Kay yes I know, I’ve seen the movie twice, thing that baffles me is people call it racist, I’m sure there was an obvious reason why they didn’t glorify slavery, because it’s a kids show, the movie is more on progression of races loving each other and other morals like, “no matter how far you go, you can never run away from trouble.” Or something like that.

My issue is I can't see the thorns on the promotion art, which have every right to still be there as there was a thorn bush in the movie, and that they're pushing the princess angle when at the end of the move the prince chose to stay with Tiana and help her run her dream business so that doesn't make much sense, I also now have an issue with it being a post movie thing as that removes or at least extremely limits the possibility that Dr. Facilier will make an appearance, which is a terrible shame because image that "are you ready!" Bit as you climb towards the fall, that would've been amazing.

I’m surprised that you didn’t have Tower of Terror being retheme to Guardians on this list. That caused a huge uproar, and to this day there are people that are not happy, counting me, about that change. Personally experienced both and liked Tower so much better. The experience with Guardians seems so forced and completely bland with predictable themes. I hate, hate, HATE the new auction scene in Pirates. The red head pirate looks like Catlyin Jenner and the scene is also forced, which seems so out of place in the whole ride. That was a huge mistake. I’ll admit I’m very indifferent about Splash Mountain. I’m tore by it because one side, loves how it is and has become iconic over the years. Another part of me is also curious to see how the new change will look. I get that Song of the South has a bad racial stigma, but I personally do not see anything wrong with the ride at all. Nothing racist, or bad. When that back entrance to Galaxy’s Edge opened, I heard that people were taking notice to it and was becoming more popular. Unfortunately with all the racial tension going on, that was the nail in the coffin. Again this is only my opinion on this video

@outlawscar33284 жыл бұрын
Why doubt that? These changes are ridiculously expensive. Like- mindbogglingly expensive. They would be sure not only to float the idea, but to get at least half-way through pre-prod to make sure the concept is worth investing in before announcing it to the public.

Anne Hatchaway comes across as very cliche. The beating heart bride was one of the most terrifying things in the mansion, and the image stuck in my head as a kid. The ballroom scene with the ghost dancers is my favorite though. That wasn't scary to me as a kid, and was just cool.

Moana was a way better movie in every way too! I dont want to see splash get a retheme, but a moana retheme would be pulled off so easy there!
@starandfox6014 жыл бұрын
I don't see how a Moana theme would fit there.it doesn't really fit new Orleans square or critter country.while the princes and the frog does and can even allow for a expansion of new Orleans square. It's more of a adventure land type ride.

Splash Mountain is a classic and there’s no controversy surrounding the ride because the ride has a cast of characters of a diverse menagerie of many animal species like bears, foxes, bunnies, raccoons, frogs, gators, possums, storks, and so many other species!

@MagicallyElena4 жыл бұрын
Well actually its not a classic attraction. It was built in 1989. The movie may be classic but the ride is not. Classic rides are anything that was there when the park was open in 1955- through about 1975, like peter pan's flight, pirates of the Caribbean, enchanted tiki room, sleeping beauty's castel, haunted mansion, tea cups, snow white scary adventures , space mountain, jungle cruise, its a small world, Mr toad, etc.

It defaintly is controversial cuase it came from a film that poorly portrayed share cropping. Also you can buy copies of the movie even DVD copies.cuase it was released in countries like Canada on DVD and video tape.
