It can actually turn your TV on if you plug in a separate micro-USB power source to the Chromecast rather than powering it from your TV's USB port (which turns off when the TV is off, so the Chromecast is dead). :) You also have to enable CEC in your TV (this is disabled by default on my two Vizio TVs, anyway).

Thanks Douglas! So our Chromecast is plugged into the TVs HDMI port, then power is from the wall outlet. I think the issue is our TV is a bit old and doesn't give us the option to change the HDMI settings :(

Great question sdancer516! I haven't tested the length for longer than an hour or so - but my guess it will keep going until we ask it to stop. Have you tried it yet?? If not, maybe I can test it!

Nice review. But it is probably worth mentioning that it isn't actually connected to your phone. It is connected to your Google account which has your phonebook and number (by default on android). So you would be able to make a call even if your phone is turned off.

I found that if I need tv to turn on I ask Google to turn on Chromcast. The tv turns on for me. 😊

Hi Phil! Does what have to do with it? If you mean, does the Wifi speed affect the usage or capabilities - I would say not really. Because it's not loading any pages, videos, etc. However, if your connection is spotty and you're streaming music or some other audio, my guess is that it's possible but not likely. Hopefully that somewhat helped! I'm not sure if I totally understood your question though..

If you have multiple Google homes in your home, you can broadcast a msg to all of them by saying "Hey, Google, broadcast *the msg*"

Yeah Bruno! We just got another too so we could do that. Actually, even when you're away from the Google Home Mini, you can broadcast! My husband will often broadcast that he's on the way home, or other funny messages lol

my tv turns on and off with commands. you just need a cec from the tv. they usually have it on smart tvs

Is your chromecast using your TV as a power source? If the TV's off, then there will be no power on the chromecast. Try to use a USB charger for your chromecast, then plug it in your power bar or wall outlet. Depending on your TV model, you might be able to turn on the TV by saying "hey google, turn on the tv" now

Hmm.. the Chromecast is plugged into the TV's HDMI port then the other end is in the power outlet. I think if I have a smart plug, then the Google assistant could control it from there.

Top ONE lame Feature - WARNING if you're thinking of buying a Google Home or Home Mini ... YOU CAN'T CONNECT IT VIA BLUETOOTH to an external BT Speaker like you can EASILY with ANY Amazon Echo or Echo Dot! And the Home Mini has NO SPEAKER OUT jack to physically connect to an external wired speaker either (which the Echo's ALL HAVE!) I have 2 Echo Dots and 1 Google Home Mini and this is a deal breaker! To connect to an external speaker with the Home or Mini you have to ... guess what ... BUY a Google Chrome Speaker, what a shock! Google = Greedy.

Hey bc azur! We tried with my husband's phone (cuz I don't have WhatsApp) but it doesn't work. However, you can send messages! Just say "OK Google, send a WhatsApp message to (name)” and then dictate the message. It will automatically be sent.
