Great post!! I'm currently enrolled in a software dev bootcamp but I plan after finishing to branching into the cyber security space, with the goal of getting into 'blue team' roles, and from what I've been learning in parallel with my coding bootcamp is that in the Cyber security space , I feel like I made a great choice finishing and having this coding knowledge going into Cyber!! Being able to read and understand the code, what it's doing and having the knowledge to create tools is something I see is a very good skill set to have going into Cyber! Your videos have been great and I've taken so much from them!! THANK YOU!!:)

Try also setting up your own blog on your journey. Include your name in each article. The blue team roles require an innate depth of communication skills. If you can develop your communication tone and sentence formulations it will help. Go to meet up events in your city especially within the government sector. Jobs will seek you. Keep going.

I have heard from many many many people that CEH is garbage and completely useless. So I started researching more, and found there are endless forum discussions on how useless that cert is. There is nothing technical about that cert. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I got it. I'm getting ready to start applying even after obtaining these certifications. It's still hard to break into the Cyber Security industry. It might be were I am located. The market in Louisiana isn't really big for Cyber Security. It's more of a Help Desk market here honestly.

@@strappedup24 got to get that hands on experience regardless man. Set up a home network, and run PfSense on it. This will give you real world experience and talking points for the interview plus will demonstrate your love of technology and self drive. All this will come across in the interview too. Plus, specifically for CyberSecurity there are tons of Remote jobs.. best of luck man!! GET IT

Excellent video! I hold 5 out of the 7 certifications that you listed and will definitely say that your spot on with the rank and salary expectations however depending on the market you live in you can add another $50k- $100K to those estimates.

I have a friend who failed CISSP twice but passed CISM on the first try and he said it was much easier. I would suggest anyone on the fence definitely try for CISM before they revamp the material and make it harder.

01:54 You're exactly right. I have CEH and have not really felt the need to get the OSCP yet although I have taken the course and months of the lab machines as well as GPEN. I don't like maintaining certs so I get the minimum required for the job I want to get but I will take courses and practice skills all day every day.

Done both OSCP and GPEN I liked GPEN better. 1st, GPEN instructor tells you about their personal experience, the industry opinions and whatnot 2nd, GPEN's teaching style is better - video, audio, book, and etc. ondemand app accessible anywhere 3rd, GPEN - you get what you pay for - cant reveal too much details, but you will see when you sign up for it Of course, OSCP is still the golden standard no questions asked. But they just cancelled 30 and 60 day sub so I think lots of beginners in the cyber sec will slowly shift to other institutes (not SANS for sure as it is much more costly) such as TCM, elearn, sec blue, zero point, and etc.

CASP is harder than CISSP but less sought after by HR. My friend taught the Air Force's Security+ course for almost four years. Passed 401, 501, and I think 601. Passed CySa+. But failed CASP.

Fun fact, these metrics are highly misleading. The way they pole the data is usually based on someone who already works in IT and then got the certification. You should not expect to get *fill in the blank* cert then ask the sudden be worth 6 figures.

ITIL v3 I hv but never heard of 100kusd I have 17 years in IT but salary less than 2k USD a month in malaysia. I have ccna ccnp aws SAA, alibaba acp, azure foundation , mikrotik mtcna, ITIL v3 , complete pmp class but never took certification, os hardening experience, solve vulnerability, solve some cve, I m pursuing cissp and ceh hopefully can get higher position n salary. I just try my best.

What?? You have the best chance!!! You would sit perfectly within the governance or analyst roles. But you have to spend time meeting and engaging within the sector. LinkedIn is best. Join cybersecurity groups within your city. After two years in the industry you could become a non exec director in numerous cyber security companies. A lot of the adequate knowledge within the CS sector happens offline. Join the SANS institute. Get onto a train and learn program. You can work and learn at the same time. Just get into it. Don't say no. Show up with all your past skills.

I would not say ITIL is a cyber security cert but rather an IT cert

Cybersecurity IS IT though. Even if you don't do any of the specifics of the cert, it still shows a company that you have a much more broad mindset of skills and thus get paid more. ITIL in this case is a goldmine, even though a lot of people consider it mind-numbing. The skills are invaluable to a business.
