Let me share a tale from my childhood: back in the 80's my father worked for Brazil's First Bank (Banco do Brasil) in the center of data processing (Cesec). One of the most noisy and loudest room was just a couple floors up where he actually worked: A medium sized room where almost 24/7 around 30 people typed vigorously into their, guess what?, Amstrad word processing PC's. It was so loud that it would literally echo down the avenue and could be heard almost anywhere in that building. I remember vividly that sound as I walked from my school towards his workplace every friday so he could take me to a video rental. Now I finally understand why that sound was so deeply engraved in my memories. Thanks (?) I guess lol

I don't mind MX Blues, and clones except for use in an office setting. In fact my main board at home being a 10 keyless Aula uses dampened Gateron Blues. I also have a Rosewill full size keyboard with Cherry MX Browns for my work keyboard, but the shift keys love to bind/stick at times, so might switch to the IBM kb-8923 I got for free from the e-waste pile at the local recycle drop off for free once I give it a good cleaning, and testing for my work board. Far as hating Cherry keys I get it as they can be overpriced compared to the clones, but they work well at least with the MX series, however the Cherry ML series I so want to love on my Cherry G8404100 board, but at the same time I want to send it off into the pits of hell fire because once used for a decent length of time they turn to scratchy piles of dog shit.

The amstrad is incredible, they managed to make a keyboard that sounds like a spring jumping on an infinite tunnel! About the futaba vintage linear I think that when they were brand new they didn't squeak, it must be some sort of deposition inside the switch of something that decomposed on another part of the keyboard, or grease (maybe oil) drying out. A good cleaning, maybe with an ultrasonic cleaner, may solve that problem, and I think some lubing certainly will. Anyway the build tolerances of those switches should be incredible compared to the "state of the art" of nowadays, cherry switches.

However if you get a relatively thonky setup with blues where it's only the switches making noise, it's quite nice really. Knockoff blues are hit or miss. Sometimes they feel better for typing but honestly they need to be lubed. I still prefer the sound over most membranes and laptop scissor keyboards, but then again that isn't saying much is it. TBF some really solidly built boards with thick caps cans sound alright with Cherry Blues, like not the worst thing ever, especially if it was a good batch that doesn't rattle. Buuut still not my cup of tea at all.. :) Having used both Cherry and the clones before I noticed that they had a strange effect where my ears would feel like they 'closed up' a bit, along with some kind of bass rumble from the effect of my ears doing this. I found this is called "acoustic stapedius reflex", and it is basically involuntary middle ear muscle contraction to protect against loud noise. I think the frequency of the click in blues is probably right in the upper register of a baby's scream, pretty awful! Gaterons and Outemus are the worst for this, really distracting to type with.

Before you comment: Just because you have MX Blues does not mean they are a good switch. Do yourself a favor and get Box Whites/Jades/Navies. They're better in every way, and cheaper as well.
@JordanCS136 жыл бұрын
Ye11ow no doubt. I had a cheap board with Outemo Blues and the earsplitting shitshow that they are made me almost swear off clicky switches as a whole, until I tried Navies. Holy hell...amazing keyfeel and a great sound. Built a board with them and I love it.
@JordanCS136 жыл бұрын
lordlors not really a 'production' board, but you can buy boards from KBDFans and have them build it for you with Navies.

I'll let you know that I have a Cherry MX Red keyboard and so that is literally the best keyswitch in the world - no competition
@AbsoluteBarstool6 жыл бұрын
Nope, best in the world - no question. Then it will be a bit crap when I start using other switches.

Nope, any switch I'm using at the time is automatically the best in the world. All else is trash.

I was really excited when I got a keyboard a few years ago with Cherry MX Blue switches. I absolutely loved them... for maybe a few weeks. While I grew up with some beautiful sounding keyboards back in the day, the clicks in the Cherry MX Blue switches were surprisingly high pitched and tinny, not like the old IBM keyboards I remembered. I assumed that it was just me, but when I saw this video I watched it specifically to see if you'd mention the Cherry MX Blues. It feels good to know that it's not just me. They really don't have a great sound, despite all of the hype.

I'm also using a clicky keyboard. It's a Havit keyboard with the same keys. The only complaint I have is that they are a bit loud, but they sound fine and feel good.

A lot of people do and they're debatably better than Cherry MX although some people allege some switches have repeated input problems. He just hates the MX Blues and Gateron Blues are MX blue clones with a sound he hates even more.

I have 2 keyboards that have Outemu Blue Switches. One is the ACGAM AG6X and the other is Blackweb Mechanical Keyboard (Yes a real mechanical keyboard by Walmart, has newer Outemu Blue Bracket switches). I found out that their stock keycaps AMPLIFY the click-sound to ear-piercing levels. I proved this by swapping keycaps from a Compaq MX-11800 to the ACGAM and yes, Outemu sounds much quieter with MX-11800 keycaps. Maybe you should give your opinion on Outemu's newer blue "bracket" switches. To me, the noise level is a hair above a Model F AT (and I have 2 of them)

I would have put Cherry MX blue in 1st position, in my own opinion. I can recorgnize the sound of them from a mile and they definitely do sound very bad. I would even prefer the sound of a Dell KB 212
@Aggrofool6 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are shrill AF. When I got it as my first entry-level mech, I thought they were awesome but got old really fast. Having said that, try the Outemu Blues in person and you'll see why it's #1 in this list. It's so loud you cannot hear yourself think.

A little surprising he didnt place MX brown on this list...

andrew arvianto People love to shit on the MX brown for some reason.
@andrewarv47856 жыл бұрын
Alex Snitzer idk, I personally like the way MX Browns feel (particularly the less-scratchy RGB version), but I wouldn't say that the sound is bad since I've never tried an alps, kailh box, etc in person and that I would certainly agree that they sound better than MX Blues... (just a preference)
@Maria-qw9om5 жыл бұрын
The tactility of browns almost doesn't exist if you press the keys fast enough, which is why I went with blues. The sound is also not a problem if you're wearing a headset.

I hate MX blue clones. I have bought Magicforce 68 with them and the rattle is hideous. Now I'm using BOX Blacks, but past me me decided on JD40 layout, which is annoying as fuck. At least it sounds nice.

I think you're a bit jaded with cherry and clones. There's no way that the mouse piano is not the worst on this list. They deserve to be on the list, but not on 1 and 2.

I really don't know why they would make a keyboard intentionally obnoxiously loud a selling point. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for linears.
@kevadu6 жыл бұрын
Nelson For me at least clicky switches are mostly about tactility. But as it turns out the best ways of making a sharp, distinct tactile event basically all generate some noise. Sure non-clicky 'tactile' switches exist but the tactility is weak sauce compared to a good clicky switch.
@swandonovan6 жыл бұрын
Kevadu you haven't tried tactile space invaders
@kevadu6 жыл бұрын
Swan Donovan Um...I have though. Frankly I find it hard to understand how that is your pick for a counterexample. They're mediocre at best. Kind of like stiffer MX Browns. Even if we're only talking about tactile switches they're far from my favorites (which would probably be orange Alps BTW).

that was a particularly bad example of mx blues, to be fair. I'm not sure I'd put them in my top 5 since they're not super offensive to me if they're on a well built board, but I'm also having quite a bit of trouble thinking of what might replace it, IBM buckling springs, maybe? nice clunk on them but they've got a hell of a reverb going. personally I think the futaba MA is the worst of the bunch here. I'm more sensitive to twang off the upstroke than I am to pitch.
