My high school art teacher not only believed anime WAS real art, but she was a HUGE Ghibli fan. She literally had a whole segment where she addressed how anime is real art, and all we did was watch ghibli movies. She’d point at the screen and go “see? It’s BEAUTIFUL!” And she was in her 50’s lol.

Unpopular art opinion: shading with black is okay if it’s the kind of style you’re going for. Example, superhero comic book styles, you can make your character look like they’re from a comic book if you shade with black. Like, if you have a detective character they might look really cool shaded like that. Edit: okay maybe this opinion isn’t so unpopular if over 1k people liked it

@@libalarrr However, to add on to that, I actually paint realism and it's perfectly fine to shade some parts in black. It all depends on the reference image, of course. I tend to add lots of contrast and hard/deep shadows on my portraits and I tend to use black quite a bit.

Me too tbh My best friend helped me realise that if I look at something and try to draw it it's all right. I saw that artists use references but I felt bad when I did because I always tried to draw from mind and that wouldn't look so great.. But when I used reference it all looked way better and it felt like cheating. When my friend and I tried to draw something from a photo togheter she complimented me and I said :,, ya but I feel like cheating.. " and she told me it's not cheating and we had a discussion. From then on I realised that it's not bad to use reference or try to draw something that you see in real life or from a picture as reference. I'm greatfull for that moment💜

Sigh. Using reference to study or practice is good, even necessary. Using reference in your finished work is a crutch and should be frowned upon. If you need reference for the finish, you’re simply not ready, and yes, you’re a fraud. Sorry. Appealing to various “famous artists” won’t change that fact.

Nothing wrong with it. I don't understand what you mean by "not ready" and "a fraud" in this case. Could you be a little more specific? You can't possibly mean that in order to be a "real" artist you have to be able to draw and paint anything from imagination, everything from nature with all its species including the very diverse humans to various man-made items to architecture to everything fictional/fantasy, and also every possible lighting scenario, right?

I'm glad this comment exists. I've seen incredibly stubborn traditional artists trash talk all digital artists because of the features of various drawing programs, and would refuse to listen to anyone saying otherwise. Digital art programs may make things simpler, but even if you had all the custom brushes in the world at your disposal, you still have to be skilled enough to know how to use them. That and digital art is much easier to make time for in most cases, since there's less setup to do. If I was only allowed to make traditional art, I'd never have the time or budget to buy all the materials I would need Long comment short, I appreciate that you're not one of the stubborn ones lol

Some girl in my art class claimed to be a professional commission artist. Her "advice" was to not use guidelines because it makes the lineart messy, and only use references when you've never seen something before. We compared drawings, and I admit that her shading and coloring were okay, but her perspective, anatomy, and understanding of physics was absolutely bongwater.

"stop drawing [a very specific cartoonish style]" is literally what a principal of an art school said to me when i tried to apply to his school. The whole point of wanting to go to that school was that i wanted to learn new things, but he still refused me "because i wasn't good enough for the school". This fucking hits right in my feels, man. I know i'm not that good at drawing, i'm self taught, i never had a real art teacher (besides from primary schools but those don't exactly count), and drawing/maybe becoming an animator has become my dream career but people around me are either "it's not a safe work" or the schools i want to go are way too expensive for me to attend, so i'm stuck with my depression thinking i'm as worthless as my art.

Try to draw/paint more frequently. You also don't need the best supplies starting out, as long as you get more accustomed to what you're trying to do.. I recommend saving up to go to school, or finding a similar avenue to your goal. You can also look for a gallery close to where you live, and make friends with other artists with different styles. Share ideas, and tips. They may even be interested in animation someday themselves, and may provide you with advice on what they're trying to do to get there. Keep in mind a lot of artists have made it big without having to go to an art school as well. Look up some affordable softwares to get you started on animation right off the bat. I'm sure there's vids out there to help you with any questions you may have in regards to the software your using... You got this

If you love drawing keep at it , fuck that school and the principal lol keep practicing if you want to be good, friends that say it's not safe are those that probably have parents that say that to them. Some people think you can't make a living on art, if you keep at it and you really want to make your own animations too I would start by learning all of that on youtube here and maybe start your own channel with animations, or a vlog.

Almost like my case when I applied to art school. I am also self-taught btw my respect for you keeping up on this way! At the interwiev I showed both traditional and digital artworks of mine, -since I heard when my friend was interviewed before me and with her his problem was that "you only brought traditional art but our plan is made out of 70% digital work" and I teached this friend of mine how to use digital art programs. On the traditional one that was entirely from my imagination, on digital I inserted some pictures on the finished pieces to show what I used as references (mainly about the certain character or the flower I used, but the traditional also had both just out of my memory and my own book's character) What did he say? "Well we see here there's not much drawn by yourself-" /as in the meaning that I used references/ like excuse me I literally designed a new dress and hairstlye for more of the characters what weren't mine and had the whole settings and concepts and researched flower language for hours if not days- If someone draws a portrait of the other that will not be done "by themselves" either in this meaning?? No need to say I wasn't accepted but as I saw later how my friend struggled with shit she never wanted to learn and barely getting to do anything what would be in her interests... I might be the lucky one here:'D Straight out ridiculous what some art teachers and others dare to say while apparently not knowing anything nor what damages they can cause for the artist.. “Digital art isn’t real art!” That sentence has always been so funny to me. My sister is also an artist but works more in jewelry and acrylic, and she asked me to draw up something for her business. I showed her the process while making changes. Both her and our mother were laughing, looking so confused as I went through layers with multiply, color dodge, blend, getting fonts and fades. Both of them respect what I do and the work that goes into it. Art comes in so many forms and everything is valid.

The battle of "never shade in black" and "use black for shading". I understand where both come from, but hear me out: i think it really depends on the style you're going for, there's a lot of comic books who's artists shade with completely black and it looks dynamic and cool, there's traditional art painted in grayscale with big patches of black color I think to make black shading look good you just need to know how and where to use it

But I don't believe this battle is about that in particular. Cuz comic books that use completely black blocked areas to simulate shadows are just a style, this is common, it would be the same as saying "don't use black to make your lineart", and that would be bullshit. No, I believe the part where people rightfully say "don't shade with black" Is if you're using exclusively colors to paint the work. As in "do NOT mix black with colors to make them darker", you know? At least that's what I think. And they're right, because we see no black in real life, and it greys out the colors, it makes them muddy and weird and it doesn't really fit anywhere (only in VERY specific cases). So, yeah, shading with black is perfectly possible, just don't mix black with other colors to make the colors darker because it doesn't really work. Same with avoiding white, the effect is approximately the same but in lighter areas.

I remember my mom gets pissed every time I draw. And after I started earning a big amount of money she started encouraging me to do so. I find it such an offensive and selfish thing for me tbh. And then she started comparing my siblings to me and how I’m better than then cuz I have a work from home job. My mom was gonna buy an ipad just so that my sister would start earning money from art too and she said she was offended about my moms reasoning especially since she’s been asking for an ipad for months. I always hated how against anime my art teachers were. They called it stylized and not real art. I understand the reasoning behind not letting us draw anime because they wanted us to understand anatomy and realism but they shouldn’t disregard it as art. It takes a lot of skill to get proportions right and shade characters. I find that more of art than a person painting a random square on a canvas.

I tried digital art myself, but I do it like I draw it on paper. I don't use some type of tools that usually the computer does it for you instead of you drawing it. It's not that hard as long as you know how to do it. It's like drawing on paper but you're using a computer lol. He uses layers and some type of other stuff, I don't.

That bit about the eraser really hit home. I remember being around 11 and in my high school art class-the teacher threatened to bite the erasers off our pencils if he saw anyone trying to erase. It was hurtful because i was just beginning to find myself artistically and my style at that time involved using the eraser over shaded areas to add highlights. I of course ignored him and did whatever i wanted to anyway. 😂

I'd met anti-left handed people in my life and yeah, their comment were pretty destructive for the child I was. Some of them were even trying to force me writing and drawing with the right hand as it was some sort of disease to be left-handed. Funny that one of these person saw my drawings, and said I was pretty talented, and immediatly change his opinion after learning that I was left-handed, searching for every mistakes. Im a (what you would call) “traditional artist” and I got my first drawing tablet like a year ago and let me tell you, at first, I was so lost, I used like 2 brushes 🤣 and when i got the hang of it my mind was blown with how much I can do. Also I have a friend who is a “digital artist” and we love exchanging knowledge and tips which I find amazing. I think the "shade/don't shade in black" tip is tricky. There can be a lot of instances with harsh lighting where you need really dark or black shadows. Even in art like anime, black can be used in places. I think the main thing is to really study what reference you're using and apply those shadows. I personally think black or close to black shadows can help me with contrast.

Ikr. I managed to finish one piece so far (one piece of art I mean, not the anime). And that was just copying a photograph. And not in the good way, like photo on the left, drawing on the right, no no. I shamelessly created a new layer and copied everything 1-to-1, no free-hand linework, I color-picked the photo for every single color, and so on. I did all the nasty little things. And it still managed to be a pain in the ass and took me several days to complete... But hey, I've got it done and I tink I've learnt a thing or two in the process. Mostly about blending, because that's someting that color-picking can't do for you.

I'm _okay_ with a pencil on paper - not decent, but okay -, but my digital drawing looks like the doodling of some 4 year old Kaspar Hauser, who has never seen the thing he aims to portray. In digital, working with shapes of color is way easier than drawing, I'd say. In this digital is closer to painting with oil or acrylics on canvas than it is to drawing with pencil on paper. Sadly, I always sucked at color....

@@nox-II I'm not convinced that knowing this would really help you that much. I think the actual first steps might vary quite a lot from artist to artist. What you really need to find is something that makes you stick to it in order to build confidence in handling of the software. Let me explain: There might be plenty of tutorials with exercises here on KZbin (Sinix and Marco Bucci for instance are great!). But there's something of a negative feedback loop here: if you struggle with the program, because you don't know how to do the things you want to do, then you get frustrated and won't pursue any exercises. But if you don't really work with the program, you won't learn how to handle it. And so on. At least that's how it was/still is for me. So you need something that makes you say, "Screw this shit, I really want to do this thing, and if it takes a month, then so be it!" That's how I've learnt to handle Gimp: I really wanted to design my own jerseys for Pro Evolution Soccer, because I had explicit design ideas in my head. (And I had to learn how to get them into the game afterwards, but that's another story.) So I fought my personal war against the program, fooled around for days, and in the process tried out about half of all the tools and effects and stuff. And now I think I'm quite competent in handling Gimp. (Obviously, my first jerseys sucked hard, but the las set I did is quite decent, I'd say.) I have no idea if my workflow is effective in any meaningful sense, or if there are more elegant ways to achieve the results. But I'm quite confident that I can do the things I want to do. And now that's the same approach I take with Krita (the drawing software I use - it's free and recommended by many as a good point to start). It's not jerseys this time, because those are still best done in Gimp, but girls. Nude girls. And not for some artsy interest in the physicality of the feminine body, no. I simply want to draw cute, sexy girls, completely out of baser instincts. There's a pandemic out there, I'm single and lonely, please don't judge me. So, yeah, this time that's what I'm fighting my war against the program for. And that's how I will gradually build up confidence with the software. Once this is done, I can go back to the exercises to actually become competent in digital art. So that would be my advice to you: Find something you want to do NOW. Goals like "I want to do a better artist" are good, but they won't help you in the heat of the daily struggle. What you need is something you really want to get done, whatever it costs, not sometimes in the future, but YESTERDAY, GOD DAMMIT! (or something along those lines). I hope there's something in all that jabbering that helps you out a little bit. Stay positive.

Digital art isn't cheating, it simply is NOT drawing or painting, and never will be. In fact, get over it. AI is already creating digital art better than any human. Is it art? Sure. Is it the same kind of art as using graphite or oil paint? No. But I'll gladly show you my digital masterpiece, and I can create one, if you'll show me your graphite and oil masterpieces. I have heard all of these through the years, the one which affects me most currently is the 'digital art isn't real art' I have three kids with a 4th on the way, if I couldn't do my art digitally than I likely wouldn't be able to do it at all as I just don't have the space or time to do traditional art. yep, i shifted to digital art because of my insecurities in my traditional art but it took me a while to get used to it. I did notice though that digital art helped me gain confidence in doing traditional. I mean, i don't do traditional art anymore but sketching on a paper is so much easier when your in the planning stage of your art. Plus you can learn the fundamentals from masters of both traditional and digital art. Prolly one of the hardest things in digital though is setting up the pen pressure sensitivity…

My art teacher was the best. She encouraged kids to find their own style, encouraged the use of references, never got mad at kids for not knowing how to do certain techniques. She always helped them figure it out. She really focused on anatomy, color theory, and poses and greatly improved my art. She was the best, I’m sad I can’t take her class again this year.

I totally agree with you about talent and people who tell people they are shit in life since they have no talent. Just because someone is different, doesn't mean they can't achieve similar results. I have aphantasia believe it or not, and have the inability to imagine scenes in my head. I can dream, but long suspected that the reason I dream is due to external influences, as I never dreamt before I was a teenager actually. Either way, with having Aphantasia, I am fully capable of doing art in a different way than the traditional way. Just means, I need to find what works for me. It can take longer in life, but it is okay. Everything is a learning experience.

When I was wanted to go to the Fine Arts High School when I was 8 grade and literally graduated from middle school.. My family said ' what are you going to do after art school ? ' or ' after university you are not able to find a job and get money... ' or ' you should be doctor not an artist because artists art not getting money '.... This is still brokes my heart... But after graduated from university(I still have 1 year) I can be a Concept artist or script writer or character designer in some game developer companies or animation movie compaines. I don't think it can be the best art advice, using refs it's a great way to learn, but, I think the idea behind "do not use references" is that you should put an effort to not *completely* rely on them. You should encourage yourself to prove that you have that subject in your mind, and leaving references aside is the best way to do it. Interestingly enough, I think other advices such as "not using erasers" follow the same rule. If you want to clean up your lines and improve your precision, it might be a good practice to go for it.

Not using eraser while practicing actually increases creativeness you would come up with new things to make the mistake work. But like if you are making an actual piece please don't be afraid to use an Eraser

Pencil is my main medium and I love using the erasure. Not to fix mistakes (tho I do have to sometimes) but using it instead as just another tool to draw with. Erasures are a key tool and I learned a lot from drawing with ONLY an erasure. With charcoal you can cover the whole paper in black and then erasure out the black to draw an image.

I was literally chewed out my all of my music and art teachers from elementary through high school. The band directors always hated me, I had an art teacher take my drawing and throw is across the class in anger. I went through the public school system in the United States. Now, I live in Japan and run my own marketing and web development agency. Guess who makes all of the designs for the clients? Me. Guess who creates all of the proposals for clients? Me. Guess who sketches out characters and game ideas for games we are developing? Me. I am now working with developers from Nintendo doing music and SFX for games and I have also started developing games with my own agency. I am doing all of the concept art for them. I was also not let into a Music College because I couldn’t read the piece of music on Piano fast enough for the instructor. My advice for everyone, DONT STOP. Whatever you do, whatever people tell you, do not stop working at your craft! I would also recommend surrounding yourself with people who work in creative industries and also agencies. Learn from them. Learn how the business side of things work as well. Love this video.

Coming from an art baby/amateur themselves (I’ve been taking art seriously for about 4 years), I cannot express how thankful I am and lucky for my art teacher trying to encourage digital art. For they’re a high school teacher and is the whole reason the digital art class exists in my school and he founded the Cartoonist Club. He expresses how it’s easier to get you’re art out there and make comics since he makes them himself. And now I’m thinking about being a digital artist myself as a career.

I am a young doctor and wanted to do art when I was in school but traditional art was expensive. Also since I had to study hard, I was discouraged from doing art. Since 1 year, I'm drawing on my mobile phone and will be buying a tablet soon to pursue my hobby. All I can say is, digital art has made my love for art, from dream to reality ❤️❤️❤️

If you want, you can do anything, just don't give up in your main work/hobby☺️ I'm also 16 and I draw traditional & digital art just bc I want to do that. I started learning by myself in 13 and I've never gone to art school, bc my parents didn't believe that was important in my childhood😃 and I always hear from them, that art isn't normal work and ect. I don't believe in that, but I think, it's better to me start working in another sphere for money and make art/animation like my own projects)) My brother studies medicine but he's also improving his writing skills (he wanna write books) so I believe you can do it😉✨

I have always drawn with a pencil and paper but I never EVER thought that digital art was “fake art” I always admired it and thought it was amazing. I got into digital art once I finally had a device and a stylus. It was pretty difficult learning the mechanics of digital art but I loved learning how to do it. You have to get out of your comfort zone and try to draw Hands/something not your style/painting/realism or comic style/ clothes/poses/animals/etc cuz it helps you to be more open to ideas . Like when you want to draw a girl holding a sword in the middle of a battlefield, you're going to know exactly how to do it . Exploring artstyles is rlly important. It's gonna help you build up your style. If you don't want to have a style, just think of em as collecting pokeballs. (And ofcourse I'm not telling you to copy an artist's artstyle, don't get me wrong)

I actually gave a speech, in a speech class, about how anyone can learn to draw and what it takes. It was fun because, it made a lot of the other students want to give it a try then because of it. and explained, hey I learn slow but I'm still learning and growing, it takes time. if you want to learn, heckin go for it. I also still have to remind a friend its ok to use reference lol they'll so often be like "something looks off on this" and I'll suggest finding a ref, and they'll be like "I don't want to cheat tho" I'll fight you.

My art teacher in 4th grade had started a art club, i was super excited and summited some of my art to see if i could join, she told me that i couldnt join because i was doing “proper” art aka just relism, at the time my art style was vary cartoony while still having some elements from anime (though i would say that it was good) after hearing that i kinda just gave up on art and only drew little doddles on my homework. I also dont use references like ever unless i really need to, its just easier for me to not use them but i hate it when people say just dont use references cause i can tell they really help people, they just dont help me all too much

Parents really need to watch out what they’re saying to their kids. I’m sorry you had to hear that. With me, all my siblings are either in the medical field or pursuing it. And I encountered a similar sentiment where my parents straight up wanted me to quit art and be like my siblings. Fuck that. Definitely be realistic about your art goals but if being an manga artist etc is what you wanna do and you’re willing to put in the effort, it’s totally a valid option. Don’t take to heart whatever discouraging remark you may hear.

To draw from imagination you need to know what you’re drawing and that comes with practice, you gotta practice your observation too. Everyone has used references at least once even if they don’t notice it. For example: drawing from life.

And how would a person not know what they draw? I'm not against practicing🤷.... but for me personally, I don't practice, I draw. Observation? Uh, imagination don't need observation, imagination it's totally different from observation (by looking at things); imagination is something that comes from the head. If your observating then you're not using imagination, and that's not imagination.. by observing. Two different things. "Everyone used referenced at least once even if they don't notice it." ~Well that's them; not everyone. Drawing from life is different from imagination

I really love your content! This video is especially good. I used to believe a lot of them until now. The last one ("Digital art is not real art") used to stick with me the most. That's why I wasn't able to make a change and forced myself to not be interested anymore. Also gave up on the traditional ways for a few years because I kept comparing myself with others. I did come back to traditional painting and drawing recently and I was never really satisfied with it and you encouraged me to pick up this hobby again. Thank you, I haven't been this motivated in a while. Now I enjoy both digital and traditional since I don't feel forced to pick just one anymore. Will keep watching your videos :)

agreed on most of these, but shading with black is more complicated and can absolutely work in context. in many cases (especially if you're drawing realisticaly) black shouldn't be used because of how light works, but that doesn't mean it will look awful every single time. personally i'm in art school and whenever we are assigned to create a painting, i love to use black, and i mean LOVE. usually i end up making about 50% of it just that color, and it DOES look good. i know art is subjective, and there are people who wouldn't like it. but a history art teacher bought it from me for 100 dollars and asked for another more recent one. I'm trying to use this as an example that in certain styles, and good hands, black absolutely can look good if you know what you're doing.

the only thing i slightly disagree with is "don't use black for shading" i think in most cases this is correct however there are still some styles that use black and look amazing.

Yeah, IMO, black cell shading looks badass asf, but black gradient shading is kinda meh.. when the scene is supposed to look sinister, dark, and you know, deathy, i think even black gradient shading could be convenient

I was really hoping that the “ Shade with black” thing would be on this list. Specifically because, once I showed my art teacher a portrait that I had made and she said she liked it but the shading could be better. She taught me to use darker colors of the base color rather than just pitch black or dark gray. I really appreciated that piece of advice, especially seeing how much better I’ve gotten.
