Mr. William Revelle met JOHN VON NEUMANN?!?!?! THE John von Neumann!? The very definition of a walking, breathing super-genius! The person for whom that definition fits the best to have ever walked the Earth! A real Hungarian Martian! Wow! That is truly incredible

To be honest I think it's a bit of a silly question to keep asking people: "whose the smartest person you ever met". It's like asking people "who's the most beautiful person you ever met". Just sounds silly. It's asking people to rank all the people they've ever meet which isn't a very healthy way of thinking about people in general.

Hey, I know one of those people personally. But I don't think he's the smartest person I know. Erik Demaine or Terry Tao are higher in my list.

I love how selfless they all are when faced with this question. They are carefully, and with much respect, trying to describe someone’s personal qualities. Interesting to hear.
