The single best thing I've ever bought to help in practice is a wall mounted hanger for my guitar. Seeing it hanging on the wall in front of me all the time I can't help but reach over and pick it up.

Jamie McEwan I always have stood my guitar up leaning on my amp. (I know not very safe), but I finally bought a floor stand and it causes me to practice so much more. Simply because of how much better it looks in the stand compared to just leaning. It catches my eye a lot more and makes me want to grab it. I encourage any beginner to buy a stand its well worth your 12$.

There's also a thing called "the pick atmosphere". When you drop your pick while playing, it actually burns up in the air before it hits the ground, that's why you can never find them.

This reminded me of what a guitar teacher told me in the beginning of my playing: There will be times when you want to throw your guitar through the window and jump out after it. Obviously don't do this. The day will come when things click. I still have these moments for different reasons but I think back to how far I come and just set my guitar in its stand for a few minutes. Great vid Robert

David Flint: Guitar is a continuous process with continuous stages. You advance but then you fall into a rut until you work your way up to the next stage. The best way to do this is to get out of your "comfort zone." Unfortunately I don't always practice what I preach....... both figuratively and literally.

I want to apologize for the vagueness in my comment above. I was just trying to express some of the frustrations I experienced when I first started learning to play. That was a long time ago. I persevered and didn't let those frustrations stop me and they got fewer the more I practiced. I was never content with my playing and I'm still not and God willing will never be. I recently had some medical problems that made me have to basically relearn how to play guitar again. It's all still there in my head it's just my hands do want to jive with my brain. I've since come a long way and I won't stop. Im happy I found you Robert to give me a fresh look at our instrument.

David Flint that reminds me I told my ex that if I don't get to see her again I'm going to jump out of the window the awkward part was it was on the bottom floor I didn't throw my guitar though I'm not crazy contrary to popular belief LOL

To summarize the tips: 1. Keep at least one guitar on a stand 2. Play the guitar you want to play whether it is acoustic or electric. 3. Don’t pull the string down when you fret the note. 4. Place and move your thumb to the proper place on the neck according to the lower/higher strings you are playing. 5. Play in tune. 6. Play with distortion and practice muting. 7. Keep the fingers open enough to fit a banana in it using the #bananabutt theory. 8. Practice using your pinky finger.

This where really helpful! I've been playing bass for almost two years and are now trying to learn the guitar as well, which is basically starting from scratch all over again. Thanks for the great tips, I'll try to include them in my practice, both as a bassist and a guitarist! Also, could you please make a video on picking for beginners, because that is one of the things that I struggle with the most, mostly picking both upwards and downwards. This makes it extremely difficult to play more fast paced things.

I just recently found this channel and after the first video, I had to subscribe. As a 53 yr old, learning for the first time, I can say Robert is spot on with #1. I keep my guitar on a stand in the living room and I play it everyday. Everyday I see it and everyday I take it up for anywhere from 5-90 mins, even Sundays. Also, #2, I didn't get an expensive guitar. It's an Epi Les Paul Special II out of the player pack. It's serving, but I replaced the amp with a Yamaha THR10C. It's not a Gibson, but it's still a genuine guitar (as opposed to a $70 Walmart). The thumb I kind of knew about, but getting it lower to improve reach to the low strings and increase stretch was a detail not shared by others. Thanks Robert. I still have trouble muting. Sometimes my picking hand is on the strings, so I adjust and now, I'm getting sludge for sound. That's something I need to spend a month on. Time to practice Arpeggios with the new thumb info.

Great piece of advice to keep your guitar visible and easily accessible. I have my acoustic on a stand in the living room and every time I am downstairs or go upstairs I pass it by and it call to me like the sirens on the rocks calling to the sailors, but with less disastrous results LOL! End result is the next thing you know you get in another 30 minutes or more of unplanned practice every time you pick it up which adds up.

That thing with the banana is super weird. I can't even imagine it helps keeping the hand open. It might even make you get used to the feeling of always having some pressure in your hand; hence, when the banana is gone, you put the guitar back in the palm

Im just imagining a classical guitarist who started on/still plays a BC Rich Warlock.. In classical position, clean tone, with a foot stool. Now thatd be a subversion of the starting on acoustic trope. I started on acoustic and wanted to play metal, but it was the only guitar we had at the time. After playing for a year, I got a used line 6 spider IV 75 and 1992 Ibanez EX120 for christmas, and... Lets just say Ibanez’s wizard necks played effortlessly next to the much higher action and lacking fret access of the acoustic.

I agree with everything you have said...except..for one thing. Keeping your guitar in a guitar stand should come with a warning for guitars with Gibson headstocks. As a beginner, I had no idea about the Gibson headstock flaw. Not advertised by the manufacture or the seller. I found out the hard way as mine fell over because of a slight earthquake tremor and it busted the headstock of my brand new Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro right off. And then people are like..oh they are know for that. You should keep it in your case when not in use. So, now saving another $180 to get it fixed when the time comes for the local luthier's scheduled appointment...in the meantime playing a used $100 (includes shipping) Squire Affinity Strat I bought online. In theory I understand the keeping the guitar out and having it accessible instead of out of sight out of mind...but it doesn't always work out that way.

I gave up on strict use pinky/finger per fret method since I've seen top players using mostly just 3 fingers, and as it has always felt uncomfortable to me. I dont think it's that much about strenght either, as I can bend with it and use it well with certain shapes, it just feels unnartual for others. I use it mostly where it's needed and feels natural, and also on chromatic runs. Good tips and great video though.👍

I've been playing for a year now , and I am highly influenced by metal . But all I have is my acoustic , I want to switch to an electric, and I'm on a budget. I was looking at these les Paul's that I wanted to get but when I played them , the frets were too high and it was hard to slide. I don't know a lot about electrics , but are all of them like that or was it just that one guitar?

Still to this day, I'll try to learn something after trying it for an hour or two, fail miserably. I'll wake up the next day and be able to do it perfectly. It's magic

it might just be because I have large hands, but I can baseball grip the neck and do most things, but I do it mostly when I'm lazy.
