For the millions of people who have never been around livestock some practices may seem harsh. Raising any type of market livestock is not a petting zoo. You have to be tough enough to do what has to be done and protect your investment. Most animals can endure procedures and recover quickly.

All you ranchers and farmers who post videos are doing us a great service; you are teaching us where our food comes from, what it takes to produce it, and the hard work involved. It is so easy for people to gripe about what they think is right and wrong with what you do and just get on a keyboard and gripe away. Fantastic and informative video! When I was twelve or thirteen, (I am 59 yo now) we had a large animal vet. friend that took me on his normal and emergency weekend calls. I helped deliver twin calves once, (and also a breech, which was bad). He had me reach in to feel the calve's legs and where the heads were oriented for a good birth. It was a wonderful learning moment for me that I will never forget. He helped me learn about how life works. He also de-horned several cows while I watched. I realized then, that there is nothing glamrous about raising cattle. Cheers and Happy New Year to the Sonny Farms Family!!

There are alot of people that don't under stand about horns. almost all of your dairy herds do away with horns when the calves are young. When I had my oxen and go to fairs people would say look at the girl cow because they had horns ,would have to say no there bulls the horns are to help keep the yoke on when going down a hill it doesn't slip over there heads. And instead of using the powder the vet took barn cob webs and wrapped it around the horn when it shelled the outer shell . Great video keep them coming.

The type of person who would have an issue with removing horns from your livestock are the same kind of people who tout pictures of injured animals on the farm and claim that raising cattle is unnatural and cruel. You just can't win. Do what's right for your critters, at the end of the day those people wouldn't last till lunch on the feed lot. You know what they say; 'If you wouldn't accept their advice, don't accept their criticism.'

What they're saying about the horns, they're probably talking about deer and antlers. They cool with they're antlers because of more surface area, and thats why in winter they shed their antlers to get rid of that surface area that is cooling them. But yeah for cattle, I dont know about that, like you said they sweat and its not that much surface area.

One cow got another sideways " rowing" as they do and put her horns through the other cows rib cage pulling out lung tissue. The vet came and saved the lung damaged cow, and Grampian had the whole herd dehorned the same day. Dad said the barn walls were red for a year afterward.

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Northern California. That display of de-horning was very mild compared to some of what I've seen. The bigger the horns and the later in life the de-horning happens, the more blood and suffering. If the horns get bigger, you can't use the loppers. Instead, you have to use a cutting cable which is about 24" long and has a handle on each end. Not much blood for those 3 compared to what I've see too. Good job explaining it. Love the sales pitch on Angus too.

I was always given dehorning duty.... I also looked like I murdered someone with an axe at the end of the day 🤣 it’s a necessity to dehorn, one they fill out better and two they don’t hurt other cattle in the lot. And anyone who says other wise hasn’t any clue what farming and ranching is about. Truth of the matter is, we are the true environmentalist and true animal rights people. We can’t survive without taking care of our critters and land.

I see that they are using bands to dehorn the way bands are used to castrate. I wonder how that works. Sonne Farms needs to do it so I can see if it works.

@@nebraskafarmer9015 the horn has to have a notch filed init to keep the band on.sometimes the band breaks. I like Brians way better. You know the job is done, and done right.

@@nebraskafarmer9015 Tried it once on some bigger cattle. Worst thing ever, they went nuts trying to get them off the first day and moped around for the next 2 weeks. We saw the horns and knife cut all bulls, takes less then 5 min for both ends and back eating by the end of the day.

Damn, your laws in the US are a lot more relaxed than in Norway. We have to call the vet to do it, in addition we also need to give them 2 sedation shots, one of which is local. We also need to apply for permission to remove them (you can guess which answer we get) if they have started growing so much that we can see them. Ahh, they joys of living in a society that doesnt understand that dehorning is for the animals best. Good video as always Cole!

We don’t really have a law for it the government hope we do the best and hope that the owners know what they are doing you have some that may not feed cattle the right way but where we are you don’t hear of people abusing or doing something wrong with the cattle

That’s interesting. I knew that laws are strict on the treatment of animals in the EU (I’m assuming all country’s in the EU have very similar rules) but I didn’t know it was that extreme. What are the rules around castration?
@grus-tube73064 жыл бұрын
@@Jaxon-iu6vb I dont really know the rules that well (where I work we dont castrate the bulls). But I know that you have to sedate them, and I think the vet has to do the castration. It is weird for me everytime I see video of guys vaccinating/treating their animals themselves, since here we basicly have to call the vet to do anything.

For cold weather processing we have a steel 45 gallon barrel with a hole cut in it on the bottom of the side and stick a tiger torch in there on low just so it’s warm not hot, heat rises through the barrel and keeps your syringes and needles from freezing between uses while they are sitting on top of the barrel, also then doubles as a table. Hi from your friend up in Alberta.
