Finally got a day without rain but unfortunately it is still sopping wet in most fields. Regardless the corn has to get top dressed one way or the other.

we use a sprayer with drop hoses to put near the ground. We also put in 5% S to help keep it from going away if no rain is coming. But urea is lower in price of N.

Monhaut Holsteins Next week is looking better. The estimates I heard this morning said that we would need at least 10 days of drying out before guys could get back in the field. Could be worse though, over around LaCross they had over 12 inches last week and most fields are actually under water.

I broadcast urea before I make my last pass with the cultimulcher so that I can mix it in the soil lightly. Then if the weather doesn't cooperate I don't have to worry about getting nitrogen on my corn.

That may work for you in that soil, but you can't get away with spreading urea without incorporating it in the soil I've got (forest floor Iva). You end up with lots of nitrate water headed for the Gulf (cultivating it in does work though). That and unpredictable weather is why we always pre-plant incorporate the fertilizer. I do see a fair amount of side-dressing with anhydrous around here.

1850oliver180AC We are pretty fortunate that it works for us around here. I would say better than 90% of the N around here goes on side dress. However the recent weather has got me thinking about getting a set of saddle tanks and setting my cultivator up to put on N28. It wouldnt be a big deal if our CO-OP had a high wheel spreader but these Willmars that they have just dont have the ground clearance and it makes timing the applications pretty critical. If I had a decent cab tractor I would love to use Anhydrous but there have been a couple accidents around here in the past involving guys getting caught up in a cloud and getting seriously injured from that stuff when the ground wont seal up right so for now im gonna stay away from it.

Oliver66FarmBoy Anhydrous ammonia is dangerous, but I've got other reasons besides that for why we don't use it. My row cultivator is rigged to side-dress liquid fertilizer, but if I were to apply all the 32% UAN for the milo in one pass, I would run my 50 gallon cultivator mounted tank out in 1.5 acres.

1850oliver180AC Yea, that would be slow going. I was figuring on getting a set of saddle Tanks about the size you had on the 1850. I just dont have a good tractor to put them on right now because my 1955 wont go narrow enough for 30 inch rows, narrow front on the 1800 wont handle the weight in soft ground, and the 1600 is getting a loader on it. All this tells me I have an excuse to buy another tractor!! LOL

how much urea do you put per acre?

With all the rain di you consider knifing in your nitrogen? Down here in southern Indiana it out produced urea by at least 40 bushel an acre.

Down here, whoever you buy the anhydrous from generally provides the toolbar.

I cant think of a single person around here that uses anhydrous. I havent seen any tanks at our COOP in probably 5 years and they scrapped their toolbars. The Helena doesnt have any either. Our ground has too much clay to seal up good so its extremely dangerous to use anhydrous and youre loosing money right into the air. Our COOP only has one 28 applicator that is small enough for me to pull and come side dress time the waiting list for it is a mile long so im not waiting around for it, plus its a pile to begin with. And Helena doesnt have any applicators that I can pull. Hence, I have no way to put on 28 yet.

rnich35180 I havent had a chance to measure the spacing yet. But overall population should be a tick over 30000.
