I don’t understand how the company turning for profit if they need to is a bad thing knowing so many other companies investing heavily in AI are already for profit. I believe that staying non profit is a shot on the foot.

I think it makes sense. They claim the business needs more capital to operate and expand so this move lets them raise capital and their co-founder (and perhaps staff) get a financial stake in the business as an incentive. Google, Meta and the other players don't have a non-profit handicap when raising capital. I speculate whatever Altman saw inside their R&D dept was worth the backlash from pushing for a financial stake in the for-profit structure. He's playing Chess.

Perhaps. It is definitely possible we are overestimating the capabilities of a future LLM model like GPT5, however even if GPT5 is only a 1% improvement to GPT4o, and yes this will have a significant negative impact on the tech market, AI is never going away. This isn't like crypto where it's pure hype. There's a reason for this hype and it's because generative AI is actually useful, even right now. It's already being used for great things so the hype and excitement is not completely *artificial*, like it was with NFTs or crypto.

Considering it costs hundreds of millions of dollars to train each model, and over a million dollars a day to run... They have to make this up some how. I don't see the problem here.

to train what model? To do what? Computers don't do "AI", they do TASKS. So-called AI has always existed, since the first computer.

@@AuroraColoradoUSA Generative AI has not always existed and a lot of the technologies and architectures behind these models is new (less than 10 years old). This is completely different to the traditional AI agents

@@MrMountain707 Yes but training GPT4 itself cost $100M, not even counting the employee costs of some of the greatest minds in tech. OpenAI offers ChatGPT for free with no adverts so again this is a major expense and unless they remove the free plan or flood the platform with ads, they will continue to burn money and will need the help of major investors. Something that will only continue to happen if they switch to a for-profit business model. If OpenAI were to stop getting funding tomorrow, I think you underestimate just how fast they would be out of business. Google, Microsoft, and even Amazon (with Anthropic) would jump ahead and dominate the market.
