Another great video. I ended up in the bulkhead a few times now (no pouch in front of me) so I’ve learned to wear a travel vest. I can have those things on me that I want on hand like snacks, phone, wipes, meds, ear plugs, eye mask, etc. Also, don’t forget to disinfect the area of the window, if you’re sitting there, like the handle on the shade and area you might lean your head on.

Marking your bag in a recognizable way is such a great suggestion. When your flight gets diverted and you spend 8 extra hours on a flight, you are exhausted by the time you get off. Being able to pick out your bag easily reduces stress.

I bought a new personal item bag for our trip in May. Made by ECOHUB, it’s their version of the Bento bag, but only $30 vs $299. It has 11 pockets including a laptop compartment and a wet pocket. It appears very well made and should be perfect. Also bought a suitcase sleeve for my carry on bag in BRIGHT colors. It’ll be easy to keep track of, plus another layer of theft protection.

Thanks for this one! I don't require a lot of pockets inside a personal item bag, but I like 2 on the outside. I use zip pouches inside and know what's in each one.

6:11 fingernail files - a security agent broke off the pointy, metal fingernail file from my nail clipper in London Heathrow. The nail clipper was mini-sized, and the file was < 1.5" long, but I was told it was dangerous. I was kind of impressed with the agent's hand strength and knew I'd never want to get in hand to hand combat against her. 😅

If you search for an "underseater", many of them have wheels on one side and a trolley handle. I have one from American Tourister, and I love it for short trips. It's amazing how much that l'il thing holds!

I switched from a larger tote to a small backpack after using the tote for many years, and I definitely felt out of sorts using it. I decided I liked the tote style better, but mine was always falling over and was very awkward. I bought the Nomad Lane Bento bag and will be using it for the first time in February. It has a firmer more compact feel to it, so I'm hoping I'll like it.

Interesting. I like bags... but I try to restrain myself from buying any new ones, as I have more than I'll ever use. :D My favorite go-to backpack is a Jansport that I picked up at Target quite a few years ago. It's blue and white like my favorite dishes, and it's also very handy for my needs. The front zipper pocket is quite roomy. The zipper does not go very far down the sides, and the pocket goes all the way to the bottom of the bag. I've never had an issue with it spilling. (The spillage issue on shallower pockets could be easily resolved if the manufacture would put in a double-ended zipper so you could just make a small opening on the top to reach in.) Most of my usual purse contents go in that outside pocket (except my small billfold wallet rides in my back pants pocket so I can get to it easily), and I pack the purse itself in the suitcase. My baggie with liquids goes in there too. There's also a flat outside zipper pocket on the front pocket. When traveling with a friend I zip our passports into that pocket and walk in front of the wingman, who keeps an eye on my pack and is ready to unzip and grab the passports if we need them. (Which we haven't when boarding planes, but we do need them boarding a cruise ship.) There are two full-size pockets behind the front pocket, and they each have their own double-ended zipper. I usually put any necessary papers (itineraries, etc) in the inner one (which is much thinner than the outer), and the outer one at the very back gets the big stuff. I travel with a flute in a case, a DSLR camera in a case, and a ton of vitamins and a few OTC medications in those pill compartment boxes. I also have the "toy box," a small zippered bag which holds my charging cords, a multi USB outlet (cruise ship approved variety) and light headphones. I tuck in my tablet where it will fit. On top there's just room enough for the sandwich I brought from home. Oh, and there's a mesh pocket on the outside of the pack where I put my water bottle. This entire extravaganza fits easily under the seat in front of me. I've been slightly delayed at security twice when carrying the flute. First time, the two guys on the x-ray machine were staring at the screen and muttering at each other. They finally released the pack and I picked it up. "That yours?" asked one of the guys. "Yeah." "Flute?" "Yeah." He turned to his co-worker and said, "I TOLD you!" Second time, I waited and finally hollered at the x-ray guy, "It's a flute!" To which he replied, "I know, and that's a REALLY nice camera!" When I need my laptop while traveling, I have a case I bought at one of the office supply stores a good 20 years ago. It has wheels and a pull-out handle, has plenty enough room for the computer and all its accoutrements, as well as outside pockets that can hold a few of the things that normally have to be stuffed into the backpack (such as my tablet). That case fits perfectly under the seat in front of me, and the backpack goes in the overhead bin.

Do you have a packing video on the big smart backpack that opens all the way. You mentioned it was hard to pack in it as only bag. I would really like to see how this was done. I did search and can’t find a video for it. You have the best ideas ever. I am still searching for the perfect personal bag.

When I went to England from Canada I used a bag like the striped-black one as a personal carry on. The front pocket bulged which made it hard to put under the seat. I had a backpack with wheels as my carry on which was great but the handle end is like a T bar so it was difficult to pull and it would keep tipping over.

Be careful of the peeps eyeglass cleaners. I think I ruined 2 or of rx glasses as it removed a protective finish from both. One or got weird spots that look like permanent water spots and the other or ($900+ Maui Jim rx sunnies) got weird horizontal lines across both lenses. I’ve been wearing glasses for 20+ years and never had any issues close to this.

I haven't been traveling with a personal item bag, just a carry on backpack. I have recently bought a bag to use as a personal item which looks like a small duffel bag 9x10x17 as well as a ScotteVest for the pockets. I'm planning on moving overseas, so I want the maximum cargo capacity. I'm 20 years older than you, but taller and heavier, so I do not like roller carry-on bags.

These airlines are contributing to excess luggage thrown in landfills. The personal item/carry-on sizes are getting smaller and smaller. Also, those Smartbags are already obsolete!

Just a comment on prescriptions. Your pharmacy will print out an additional label for you. You can get small prescription bottles from Amazon and place these labels on them. In Texas, it is illegal to transport prescription meds in the daily type containers. It may be the same in other states as well. So, if you are roadtripping through Texas, or even traveling to the airport in Texas, be safe just in case you have a traffic stop or accident.
@patriciap51Сағат бұрын
Texas here - where did you find the info about being against the law to carry meds in a daily container? I have nerve heard that - have always used the daily pill containers- no issues ever.
@carolynwilson780655 минут бұрын
@ One of my assistants was transporting some Amoxicillin from one office to another and was in an accident, which was not her fault. The officer noticed the bag on her front seat and gave her a ticket. I couldn’t believe it so I went on line and it is a Texas law. I’ve always carried my meds in the weekly or daily pill containers myself, but not anymore. It’s a sim chance that you would have this come up, but it happened to my assistant. Obviously, the our office paid for her violation.

Hacks to get around a rule, is sad. Why not follow the rule? And if you have to pay to check a bag, then do so.
@mhtammi2 сағат бұрын
The problem I’ve found that even though you follow the rules the gate agent is who determines what you can bring on. I’ve shown the rules to gate agent as per what the airline states but they haven’t even listened.
