@bujtorm7 жыл бұрын
It's so loveable primarily because it's so realistic. The Expanse has no artificial gravity, no magic lasers, no FTL, it's as plausible as a sci-fi can get. Gravity is given by spinning or accelerating the ship at 1G. Weaponry is still good ol' autocannon, railgun and missiles/torpedoes. You can only trust your PDC (Point Defense Cannon) grid and armor to survive incoming fire, and no forcefield will magically seal your ship if a depleted uranium round goes through and through. The MCRN Corvette fits into that, being a high-tech but still realistic warship small enough that a Donnager-class battleship can carry some of them for extended utility and fire support. It's been designed flawlessly, from the vertical deck layout (since acceleration gravity will point towards the drive exhaust), the life support being special bioengineered plants pretty much built into the ship's furniture and interior, and the whole design making sense from an engineering and military standpoint, not just from a "looks cool" standpoint. They even pay attention to so little details like putting away tools, mugs and spoons before a high-G maneuver or putting the spacesuits on and de-pressurising the ship before they go to battle to avoid explosive decompression upon taking a hit.

Although that gets into how you define ship classes. A quick google suggests that the Normandy and the Tantine IV are actually pretty close to the same length. I think Leia's ship might have the Normandy beat on tonnage just because of the outsized engines.

The term "corvette" is derived from the latin word "corvus", meaning "crow". The suffix "ette" designates "the smaller version of", so with this in mind, "corvette" literally translates to "little crow". In the days of sail-powered naval fleets, corvettes were small to medium-sized ships that were designed for speed and maneuverability, often carrying minimal armament, larger sails than other ships of their size, and having extremely hydro-dynamic hulls for optimum efficiency. As far as I know, it was these sailing ships of the 18th and 19th centuries that inspired the corvette-type starship...
@andymac48835 жыл бұрын
Really? The etymology I found was from a French diminutive of the Dutch word "corf", or "small ship", itself derived from the Latin "corbis", meaning "basket". Less cool, essentially meaning "little little ship"!

Quick question what are characteristics that make up a Corvette class ship. Is it the size of the ship, the fire power of the ship, or the role the ship fills that makes it a corvette?
@michaellewis15457 жыл бұрын
Galactic Tech Creator Okay. I was wondering because ship class can be so different from universe to universe. For example in B5 the Destroyer is the heaviest human ship. While in the Expanse the battleship is the heaviest.
@Zergonapal7 жыл бұрын
It has to have some crazy acceleration. Also needs to be very maneuverable because it will also be lightly armoured. In a sense it would be an assassin, incapable of throwing down in a stand up fight the corvette would be designed around hit and run tactics. For its tonnage it will probably be heavily armed in order to punch above its weight.
@Thehairysoap7 жыл бұрын
Corvette is traditionally the smallest class of vessel build specifically for military applications. So we can take that as any vessel that the smallest class within the fleet that does not require outriding. Though as time goes by there tends to be powercreep, just look at the vessels in starwars.
@Robloxman017 жыл бұрын
Sci-fi tends to play rather loose with modern warship classifications. Most of the time they'll be recognizable, but a lot of series use "destroyer" or "frigate", for example, to describe any ship that's "bigger than a corvette but smaller than a dreadnought" in their lore, completely ignoring cruisers. In general though, a corvette is the smallest class of ship that can be considered a proper warship. Anything smaller is a strike craft. And of course that all depends on the sizes of the ships in the universe. The 1.4 kilometer long Claymore-class Corvette in Warhammer 40,000 with its crew of 21,000 would be considered a massive dreadnought by Mass Effect standards, where the typical corvette is a tiny 10 man recon vessel, the average cruiser is about 700 meters in length and the largest mass-produced dreadnought is just under 1.2km long.

The Imperial Raider corvette is alluded to in one of the Han Solo novels. The corvette can jump to a system and release a TIE fighter with no hyperspace drive that can patrol or surveille. It can rejoin the corvette at a specific time and space point and report without breaking radio silence. It could also attack a soft target of opportunity and fade out and get picked back up. It could also decide to break radio silence and call in the corvette to take on a larger target. It makes for a versatile combination.

Each enemy fleet becomes a treasure trove of new toys for you to add to your collection!

Interesting thing I've noticed. Hero fighters/planes/special vehicles are always the best. Like your X-wings being shielded, repairable in the field, having more guns and a Hyperdrive, your Arwings styling on everything, to basically every Gundam in Gundam being nigh indestructible. Hero ships are always the underdog. From the classics of star trek ships being, I'm fairly certain always outgunned, to the Rocinante being out-tonned by everything short of Belter pirates, to even Star Wars Squadrons when you play as the empire with an honest-to-god star-destroyer, since the whole plot was about trying to stop a bigger, better ship.

Hey Daniel! If you have not already, I suggest you read the Honor Harrington novels. Specifically, the first several novels in the series go into pretty good detail about space warfare tactics and how different classes of ships must support each other. The design descriptions are quite detailed and "realistic" as long as you buy the Honorverse's technology to control gravity. That said, the use of how the gravity control devices work is also surprisingly detailed and actually serves as a limiting factor in ship design.

Personally would have more of a gunship-class style ship as my hero ship. The sort of ships I think of are the Defiant , Ghost, and Millennium Falcon. Something that could be crewed by fewer than a dozen people. It would be tanker and have more firepower than a fighter, but far more maneuverable than other warships. Through as it was pointed out in this video, in some sci-fi a corvette might fit that definition.

From a strategic standpoint, the Claymore-class from 40k is surprisingly good. It's not part of standing fleets, but rather an emergency build during wartime to plug gaps due to losses of Sword-class frigates. Simplistic to the extreme and solidly built, the Claymore is both durable for its weight and extremely easy to repair; what it is not is well armed or well endowed with advanced systems, they are built with nothing more than what is absolutely necessary. But being easy to build even in small civilian shipyards, the Claymore fulfills the escort role adequately at minimal cost, and in large scale war, better can indeed be the enemy of good enough. All that said, the role of the Claymore in 40k fiction is so different (and in many ways lesser) that the ships detailed in the video, that it's a bit absurd to try and compare them. It's a disposable, minimum cost ship built to make up for losses in more advanced ships, not the "hero ship" of most other sci-fi properties. A better comparison would probably be 40k's frigates and destroyers, and even then they're more or less disposable.

I rather like the Aegis Hammerhead tbh. Got to mess around with it during a fleet week event, and managed to gather enough people together to have it fully crewed (8x players). The thing is a literal monster when fully crewed. Its 6x quad-linked turrets are all individually manned, meaning the thing can effectively engage 6 different targets with 4x guns each, with overall 360-degree turret coverage in every direction, plus 8x pilot/copilot operated missile racks mean even a copilot can be useful in a fight. On top of that, the Hammerhead is resilient af, able to tank several missiles hitting the hull _directly_ and still survive, and its agility is on par with that of a standard RSI Connstellation. Overall, I would say the Hammerhead is one of the most dangerous, hardest-hitting ships in the game when fully crewed, but it _definitely_ would be outclassed by the Aegis Javelin when they get it working in-game.

okay so I have a pretty esoteric request, but could you cover some of the ships from Vega Conflict? it's a annoyingly grindy mobile game ported to Steam, but the ships and strategy are absolutely awesome to me. Maybe give some coverage to the Rancor Battleship, as it's one of the most powerfully versatile ships when kitted out with Hydra Missiles or Gladius Cannons. It seems pretty hard scifi to me, having battle groups with ships of different speeds and roles in a formation, I wish they would scale down the build timers by a factor of 100 so it would be actually playable and competitive for new players.
