Thanks Starlo this was exactly the thing i needed to get my fishing bug back. As a mad keen fisherman all my life i was getting caught up with catching bigger and better fish. The big sea trips and long hikes started taking the joy out of it. With work and the birth of my son i stopped fishing altogether. This video has made me remember the joy of my mullet fishing days and now i cant wait to get back into it. Thank you

Hi Starlo it’s great seeing you on the screen again or should I say on my tablet sitting and relaxing on my verandah watching you on KZbin, times have changed since the 1990’s. I am teaching my 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter how to fish they are very keen particularly my daughter and I just bought them a small cast net to teach them how to catch live bait. I love to see you catching mulloway, equivalent to our black Jew fish here in Darwin and hoping the techniques and tips you use for land based and from a boat can help me target and catch more jewies.

01/07/23: WINNERS ANNOUNCED! I'm delighted to announce that the winners of the two reels, in accordance with the terms & conditions described below and in the video description, are as follows: SHIMANO SIENNA 2500 - Mark Monkley (@user-rd5ic8ri2B) SHIMANO CATANA 2500 - Tim Harriss (@timharriss7449) Tim's suggestion was for me to do a basic "spooling up" video showing how to do it best to avoid problems. Thanks to everyone who took part! Keep an eye out for future competitions and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss them!

Hey Starlo, My suggestion would probably be to do a run-through of what you would consider the "average" day of fishing to be like, for those without necessarily all the gear or experience of yourself. Maybe a series where you explore different styles of water systems and alternate between landbased and boat fishing? I think that the amount of knowledge you have would be really valuable to a lot of people for explaining the process of the everyday fisho heading down to their local system. Cheers and tight lines!

What's really fun is to buy a mid-priced Shimano reel like a Vanford, Stradic, or Nasci and upgrade the bearings to the ones used in the Stella. You of course won't get the exact same level of refinement as the Stella but you will get a helluva setup for a few extra dollars.

After starting my earliest days with pretty rough gear I always said I would get my children qual from the beginning, I bred later then most, well into my 50s after travelling the world fishing. Last Christmas I bought my 3yr old girl a pretty crappy JW outfit purely to get her used to casting and retrieving in the back yard (and it had nifty LEDs that flashed when you cranked just to add that extra 'hook' :) ) We are off to the coast next weekend for my birthday pressie and have a place with an excellent jetty, an environment that is perfect to kickstart a lifelong piscatorial penchant. Unbeknownst to her I bought a sienna 1000 and have spooled it and screwed it onto light 5ft I had. Obviously Dad had to pretest it and I was amazed how good it was considering the price. I have always bought Shimano since the early 80s for their fine tolerances and silky smooth action which adds so much to the fishing experience even when your not catching.Theyve not only maintained their position at the top end, but always offered qual lower cost which are a pleasure to use. Im hoping this beut little reel will keep her from coveting my stradics for a few years and if not well Dads just gonna have to upgrade ;) I reckon my Mrs who is new to fishing would love that Calcuta, its her favourite colour which is of course the most important thing :) Ive always love livebaiting though I know there are some that dont agree, any chance you can do a vid on collecting and correctly using various little livies? Crabs, Nips, minnows etc?

Thanks! Just went and watched that one on pumping and using Yabs, brilliant and well worth the watch and like. I used to pump nippers in Pittwater just before Palmy before heading out in the boat but actually found the best action on them on the same grounds as the tide came back in, even got in the background of a Neighbours shoot one day and had to sign a waiver! My 5 seconds of long distance fame haha. Thanks for the tip, will def bring the pump with me to Sussex this weekend :) -

Starlo, something I don't see a lot of, which I would like to see more of on KZbin when it comes to fishing videos, is some beginners guides to using fish finders and sonar in general, how to identify schools of fish, with lots of images of the fish finder screen to go along with it. I think you're one of the best guys out there to explain fishing to the general public, experienced or not. Look forward to seeing this video, tight lines all.

Another high quality video Starlo! The video has clearly resonated with your subscribers. The Sienna is a great little reel. I bought one for my 6 y/o Lad paired with the Raider Junior and it is a great little combo for him. I really enjoy the simple approach for this video, the same style of land/pontoon fishing my young family and I are into. As a fisher who doesn’t own a boat yet, I really like the land based videos (and this one coupled with your accommodation was spot on). You posted a “catch whiting on surface while wading” video a couple of years back that was great, so that wading/flats fishing style would be my suggestion for future content.

Watching this video took me back fishing small jetties and little inlets with my brothers back home in Adelaide in the 60's. Just quiet fun, always hoping for a fish 🐠 What would be good, is a video aimed at young fishos on tying different fishing knots and when to use them. Different knots for joining braid and mono lines, knots for tying on swivels, floats, hooks, lures and the like. Another video could be on how to make burley, different mixtures to use, different ways to place and disperse the burley by wind, current, wave and tide direction. That should keep you busy mate 😀 Cheers 👍

Good stuff! Yes, lead core trolling can be deadly. I prefer to use a baitcaster or even a fly reel, as leadcore doesn't especially like turning at 90 degrees around a bail roller.

Really enjoyed your video. I’d like to see how you spooled up those reels. Do you use backing? Mono/fluorocarbon if so? How much if so? Knot used? What calculation do you use in line lengths? How do you get tension? I’m sure you could “Starlo” the above and not over complicate. Tight lines! 🎣

I was going to suggest a "Getting kids into fishing-the basics" video, but you mentioned a similar theme around the 28min mark, so maybe something like "Fishing for mental health." Also, if you do choose this, please give the reel to a kid when you're out and about. Not that I don't love new gear, but to know a kid will hopefully get that same sense of joy catching one of their first fish, just as we all did, is reward enough.

Stuff like best gear to use, baits, burley, rigs, basic knots, location type etc. Also maybe stuff to reinforce with them so they get off on the right foot, eg, bag & size limits, fish handling, fish cooking advice so the kids are excited about eating good, fresh fish, etc. A video like this would benefit not only kids but also their parents/guardians, who want to get kids involved in fishing but may not necessarily be experienced anglers themselves 🎣 😊

The fish won't hear that Shimana Sienna. A seller on ebay has the Catana for 30 bucks, new, you pick the size. lol , Same here, if you have mono on a real it's going twist. I have used cheap line and good line in mono, I lost more fish on Stren than Zebco cheap stuff creek fishing for smallies. . I have never fished with braided line aside of from when I was doing heavy baitcasting in the ricer for big catfish and you had no choice to fight the almighty carp when you hooked one so you have to be ready for that in a major water way like the Ohio river. I have watched at least 6 reviews on these reels and I can tell you one thing Sir. Your was the absolute best.

I wanna say thanks so much for your KZbin channel as it’s been my salvation from wifeys choice quality tv series like beekeeper wants a wife etc… I used to fish a lot when I was young and have only just started up again (30 years later). So much has changed as in lines and reels etc so it’s great to get tips and tricks watching your channel which I discovered from the Robbie Fishing channel. Anyhow I’ve just started getting new gear and got a shimano baitcaster and 5’10 raider rod. It’s a great setup but I’m struggling to get long casts with soft plastics . I think I need a longer rod? That brings me to suggestion of are you able to do a segment on how to cast light soft plastics using a baitcaster and how to get good distance??? From what I’m seeing people just say to use a spinning reel and longer rod. Anyhow regardless of that thanks for the great content and rejuvenating my love of fishing again 👍😀 As well as saving me from mainstream tv 😂😂😂

Good stuff! Glad you're enjoying my content. Yes, something around the 7 foot mark with a light, active tip will definitely cast further. I'll do some baitcaster how-to stuff soon, as well.

Would love to see a comparison withe the next level up. I think that’s what most of us use. Sedona, nexave etc. $100-$200 reels please. I’ve been using the 3000 Sedona hg for a couple of years now and have been really impressed.. oh! And maybe match with rods in the Raider range? Thanks mate love your content.

@@StarloGetsReel I did actually and was given a Vanford 2500 for my 50th I absolutely love it. I think what I suggested is the happy middle ground that most people would buy? Reels from $100-$200??

Great video starlo, I picked up the sienna reel and a viper rod as a combo. First fishing rod since I was a kid 30 years ago so hoping to have a bit of fun with it and see how things progress. Speaking of childhood memories, would love to see some handline-ing

Thanks, I enjoyed this video. I hope more folk get into fishing. As a topic, may I suggest salt water fly fishing. The flies used, leaders, knots, rods, reels, casting style and tactics. Spey casting, for example, is a great form of fishing.

Both reels look like theyll last a while with a good price point too. Steve can i suggest doing a video on correct spooling of braid as i seem to sometimes mess it up.maybe the issue is with the backing line.not sure if the backing is too thick or too little. Loved the comparison clip and was glad to see both lure and bait used.well done

My suggestion is, do a comparison between equivalent reels between brands. Like shimano sedona 2500 To Daiwa legalis 2500. That taipan rod "sounds" good. Where would it be in comparison to the maikuro 2?

Any reel with less than 5+1 bearings is at best a compromise and will feel less smooth much sooner and wear out significantly faster due to bushing wear. That said, 5+ bearing reels are much more expensive and reel rash is much more painful on those:/ After doing the research I went with the Ultegra hg… one of Shimano s sleeper offerings that is very smooth and incorporates most of the Vanford and Stradic technology at a significantly lower price. Really happy so far.

Hey Steve, long time follower of your awesome career, id love to see a video series on lure fishing especially as it encourages easier catch and release. They are so many types, colours, shape etc and when to use which colour for example. I think all would benefit from young to old as I have slowly converted over the years to fish lures more often than bait. Keep up the good work.

I once had a sienna 1000 sure they were silver or grey about 12 plus years ago, it was a refurbished from tackle store was cheap so I purchased, but over time was well used I think it was my fault I pulled the guts out of a small reel but I know now a bit bigger reel would suit my needs on bream, flatly in places yes my small one back then was a bit noisy but put it down to second hand
