Lol at the young Tom Cruise comment. He was younger in All the Right Moves and Risky Business, both in 1983. But Top Gun was his first summer blockbuster movie role. It cemented his status as a Hollywood leading man, which led to his fall from grace for Days of Thunder, then his comeback in Mission Impossible

FUN FACTS: 1) The elevator scene was filmed in post production after all other filming was done and the reason Charlie was wearing a hat is because Kelly cut her hair for a part in a movie she was filming at that time so they had to hide the haircut. 2) This movie made Naval recruit increase by about 300% with so many wanting to become pilots.

Arguably the epitome of ‘80s summer blockbuster popcorn movies, and one of the first MTV-ready films. You can even see how some of the music-heavy scenes were shot like music videos. I recall that summer in ’86 being dominated by this, “Aliens,” and all the “Top Gun” music everywhere. It became ridiculous after awhile. Since that summer, MTV was never the same. The first five years of the network, there was creativity…and dare I say artistry….in music videos, as directors had to be more creative by necessity due to low budgets. Then the marketers realized they could sell movies with videos, and by the late ‘80s, half the videos were movie-soundtrack videos, with just clips of the film and a few glimpses of the musicians now and then. They should have rebranded as Movie TV. However, as an ‘80s teen, you couldn’t help but back in the fun from the decade’s frippery and frivolity, and considering how music has deteriorated over the past two decades, I’ll take 80s’ neon and nonsense any day.

The absolute best Val Kilmer movie is “The Saint.” It is a highly underrated movie that you aren’t going to see on reaction channels, but definitely worth the watch!

I loved this one as a kid. A movie that's a ton of fun to watch, anytime. The 80's music is absolutely top tier in this! First watched this as a youngster, when I was 7 or 8 years old, I think. The main thing that drew me in as a kid with this movie was the regular Nintendo video game! xD It was so bad that it was good. So much fun playing that!! hahaha You really do have an excellent selection of movies. Very happy to have found you on here.

If you live Val Kilmer, you have to watch his first film, “Top Secret”. It’s a slap-stick comedy that is hilarious.
@albinorhino63 жыл бұрын
Most of the movie is over the top Hollywood stuff, but it’s still a cult classic in the flying community. That said, the way Goose dies is one of the more realistic sequences in the movie, it’s loosely based on some real events (except for the plane spinning, that part isn’t realistic). For many of us, the F-14 Tomcat is the real star of the movie lol. An old Val Kilmer movie that’s pretty good is The Saint.
@hatsiepatsie3 жыл бұрын
Several jets where lost because of the first generation Pratt an Whitney engine being prone to stall. Although uncommon the flat spin scene is definitely based in reality. The later model F-14 got the more reliable engine that cured the pressure failure in the turbine. The actual goof in the movie is the fictional Mig 28. And maverick “breaking “ while the movie shows the full throttle being pushed.
@albinorhino63 жыл бұрын
I’m well aware of the Mig-28 and the goofy throttle position - those fall under “Hollywood BS”. I’m also aware of the frequency of compressor stalls with the A models, and how a compressor stall can potentially cause a flat spin (especially in a high AoA situation), and how a flat spin can cause issues for the ejection sequence. All of that is accurate, it happened in real life. What is not realistic about that sequence in the movie is the depiction of the flat spin. The plane spinning like a frisbee, and Iceman describing it as, “he’s headed out to sea,” that is not realistic. That is not what a flat spin is. It’s not physically possible for a plane to have that much forward momentum while spinning that fast at the same time - the vertical stabilizers would prevent the rotation from happening. A flat spin is when the plane stalls at very low speed, falls to one side, and tumbles straight down to earth while spinning like a top. The vertical stabilizers become ineffective, because there is no forward momentum There’s a former F-14 RIO on KZbin called Ward Carol who dissects this scene in detail.

Yes, those of us who were kids were enamored with the F-14 and other fighter planes. They were prominently featured in the culture at the time because of the Libyan matter as this movie was coming out. An F-14 was the Skystriker of GI Joe and Jetfire of Transformers - a RoboTech Valkyrie - was based on it. I got to go on the USS Enterprise before the movie came out and was so interested in military vehicles that I knew the F-5 was being used for the fictional MiG-28.

I don't know if you've seen it, but if not, you should check out Ward Carroll's channel, it's just called Ward Carroll. He was a Tomcat RIO and worked for USNI (United States Naval Institute) for a good while. He has a video on his youtube channel that goes over Top Gun and discusses what is and is not possible in the movie Top Gun. It's pretty interesting.

I watched the Modern Marvels episode on the F14 Tomcat plane and it was an incredible feat for the late 60s to 70s for a plane that sophisticated to be created. They have both pulse and Doppler radar, which not only detects threats beyond visual range, but can detect threats from 50 feet to 80,000 feet beyond visual range and they can target and hit 6 separate planes/missiles at one time. It's kinda a killer of suspension of disbelief because the F14 pilots would've known all threats in the area waaaaay before they were visual. And they had 3 ranges of missile and the Phoenix missile could've been fired outside of visual range and kill the enemy as well. There was no fighter jet in the world at that time that could even have a fair dogfight w/ an F14, but it's a movie, ya know?
@pogo11403 жыл бұрын
The AWG-9 had it's issues. It had a fairly slow refresh rate (it's why in the second gulf of sidra incident, the F-14 RIO thought the MiG's had turned into him after his pilot had turned away from them repeatedly, in reality the MiG's held course and made no effort to follow him, they did not even know the F-14's were there because the MiG's radars were off) Over land the radar would generate phantom targets, if targets flew close enough to each other the RIO often had a hard time separating them from each other.
@jamesdee7594 ай бұрын
I don't know if you noticed at the end of the movie when Maverick requested the flyby and he buzzed the tower anyway. There were 2 Tomcat planes that actually buzzed the tower. That meant that Iceman was right there with Maverick, they both buzzed the tower. lol

Fun little point of interest: The name Iceman was taken from a Naval Flight Surgeon named, Deniz Tek. When the production crew for Top Gun was attending a real Top Gun class to see how things are run, they ran across him and liked his call-sign. Prior to the Navy Deniz Tek was the lead singer and guitarist for the Australian punk band, Radio Birdman. Radio Birdman’s best song - it’s really good too - is called, Aloha Steve and Danno. It’s on KZbin, take a listen.

1. Don't be surprised that the majority of military pilots are Alpha personalities.. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his approach and he got caught in the jet wash. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 100+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Props to all of them. 4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a little known movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT 5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. John Stockwell/Cougar played in Stephen King's "Christine". 8. Navy officer riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Even off base. WRONG. 9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called, "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT 10. 98% of Military flying accidents are during training. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In the late 1980s I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT.

I like your honesty about preferring to keep your channel about FIRST-time reactions.... just keep this in mind-- there's absolutely nothing wrong with a SECOND-time reaction to a film you've already watched. To me, it's like rewatching a great movie -- there's plenty of opportunity for conversation/reaction, and in some instances even BETTER commentary the second/third time around... just sayin' In any case, keep your movie reactions coming -- love watching with you! Thought about The Last Duel yet -- it's powerful AND it has not just one but actually three story lines to discuss!

*My father was stationed on the USS Ranger (CV-61) when they filmed the scene, in the Admiral's Quarters, where Cougar turned in his wings and the Captain told Mav & Goose they were going to Top Gun. My father was the only one with the key to that room, that day, so they wouldn't have been able to film that scene without him. He retired, CWO4, off the Ranger in 1987* 😁 *Oh yea! They offered him to be an extra, but he declined. My sisters and I still haven't forgiven him. lol When we all went to the Seattle premier, he was pointing out all his friends. Actually, we forgave him a little, when we got to wear his "Top Gun" jacket, the pilots gave to him, for his retirement, to school.*

Trivia: because the swing wing assembly on this aircraft, center of gravity was more toward...the center. The F-14 community had to come up with proceedure to know flying limits to avoid the dreaded "flat-spin" hazard.Well, that and some limits on the motors on some F-14 variants. Saw this in the theater. Fun movie. Other...funny: instructor criticizes student for going below the published hard deck for the training flight...and then himself goes below the hard deck, thus "killing" himself for the exercise.
