I just went from Edwards AFB to Hawaii in 30 minutes. Pretty cool but I wish it had an AP and the ability to do an ILS approach. Either way it’s still a cool airplane.

@@sebastianthehotsaucedude5473 actually the ai controlled trim would be realistic for this type of aircraft. Manual trim inputs would not be precise enough. In fact fighter jets such as a the F-16 and F-35 both use auto trim so the pilot doesn't have to manually trim the aircraft

Yes they 100% need auto pilot with this. Was just messing around with it and was just pretending to have auto pilot using the ai pilot mode, at first it works and would hold altitude and speed, but then after I almost got to Mach 10 and came back around 10k ft when I turned it on it just would automatically put throttle at idle, very weird

Thanks! Used these techniques and got to Mach 10.1 right before hitting the altitude roof of the game. Then was able to cruise at Mach 10.04 the entire trip.

What people don’t realise is while it is mach 10, your actually going slower as you have a lower true airspeed, in terms of how to get the fastest in the darkstar, the ideal height is between 110-120 thousand feet, where you can hit a speed of over 5880 knots.

According to the dynamic pressure tables in William Heiser's 1994 publication "Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion", the maximum altitude for Mach 10 is around 150,000 feet due to higher altitudes not having enough air to feed the engine. 263,000 feet is MECO altitude for Falcon 9. Also, there is no normal turbojet in existence that can hit Mach 3.

Thanks for the tutorial! I flew from Los Angeles international airport to New York in about half an hour to 45 minutes I got to about Mark 10.1 or 10.2 when I reach the altitude of roof the game then I was cruising at around ten point for 10.5 for the entire trip

if you go up to 275,000 feet and roll inverted and slowly bank down you can get to a consistent mach 10.1

I've been enjoying flying the Darkstar in and out of Edwards, simulating (OK, pretending) that I'm Armstrong in an X-15 on the way out and John Young in the Shuttle on the way back in. This is the first time in a long time I've had to really be a "test pilot" to figure out an airplane and finally reaching Mach 10 (with a lot of online help) was really satisfying. I dunno why, but this Darkstar is really so much fun. For those of us who were young in the 90s, obsessing over Aviation Week articles on Groom Lake, kinda wish they'd named it 'Aurora" but the young 'uns probably wouldn't get that reference..... ;)

Yeah its really good. I only wish it had an autopilot. Interesting thing is its performance is almost identical to the SR-71...then you hit the Scram-Jet button. Wow! haha

By the way, from my reading, Darkstar is actually a name that has been associated with the Aurora. If its a real plane it's probably not really called Aurora anyhow now that we know it was actually the project name for the B-2.

Aaah there's extra buttons you gotta press... I got to Mach 4 and gave up on acceleration and went got height. Got to 120k ish then it all went wrong. I aimed for the moon but the game didn't like it and cut all power and speed dropped like a rock in a pond. Didn't realise you could get to 250k though 😮 will definitely be using that button 🤘😎🤘

Thanks for the help also I have a very weird story about when I first did this basically at about half way through getting to Mach 10 the left engine failed then the right so I went into a nose dive so I had to quickly restart both engines while falling Mach 6 over the Atlantic Ocean so in the end I just pulled up around 30,000 ft

I did it. Then it glitched out. Darkstar suddenly going at more speed than just 10 despite being displayed as 10. went from Algeria to UK in just 2 seconds and game locked to 1fps. Coding is a skill that you have to learn and not cut off your... just to get hired and then laze off.

you can get to Mach 13.6 if you put weather temperature to -130 only when hit Mach 10 then do it

What was the true airspeed? Normally warmer temperatures give higher true airspeeds for the same Mach speed.

I got Mach 10.0 without flipping upside down and reached an altitude of 275, 000, but don't remember exactly what I did.

I followed the profile as close as possible but as long as the scram jet is enabled it will activate as soon as Mach 3 is hit. As long as the aircraft is counted to a high enough altitude Mach 10 can be reached.

@@thecorporatepilotdad I've done it 5 times now and have reached Mach 10.2 with an altitude of 275K feet. What you do is, take off full thrust/afterburners on and climb to 30, 000 feet. Once you've reached this altitude, level the plane and keep it at 30, 000 feet for a minute. Then begin to decend full thrust/afterburners on to 20, 000 feet, once @ 20, 000 feet gradually beging to ascend. Once you see your Mach speed rapidly climb, turn Fuel Cell on and flip the Scramble switch and watch that Mach speed climb all the way to Mach 10 or 10.2, all this without any barrel rolls.

Glad it worked. I flew the Darkstar a few days ago and forgot how much fun that thing is. You can also level off at 30,000 feet to accelerate to 500-600 knots before climbing. There is no need to do all the upside-down flying following the steps on the MFD in the Darkstar.

I think I did mostly everything right. It might be the 1.2-1.4g pull or the 1 degree pull past Mach 3 that I'm getting wrong but (if I'm lucky) I seem to only get a max speed of Mach 9.94, and I don't know definitively why.

Atmospheric conditions make a difference with live weather turned on. Going Mach 9.94 is only a few knots below the speed at Mach 10. Turn live weather off and move the temperature slider and the Mach should change.

Helps you break the sound barrier and keep accelerating. You trade Altitude for Airspeed. Once you break the sound barrier you can keep accelerating. Especially since you have a lot more air to work with at lower altitudes.

And make sure you have weather set to clear sky's I was playing with live weather and I couldn't get above 9.97 but when I set it to clear sky's went straight to 10.04

Fail. With afterburner on the moment I climb and raise the gear the darkstar begins slowing. It never gets above .40 mach and it keeps dropping.

Have you downloaded all the updates? I have had 0 issues with the Darkstar. Climb at 300 knots indicated up to 30,000 feet (without going upside down). Once there, fly level until 600-700 knots then start a climb and enable the scram jets which will ignite at Mach 3.2 then climb up to 200,000’+ and you’ll easily hit Mach 10. Good luck.

Assuming you’re on PC, go into windows settings and check the controller’s calibration. I had a joystick do the same thing. It would not center and always had a slight turn to the right and ended up being replaced. That all goes out the window if the Darkstar is the only airplane that does what you are describing. If only the Darkstar, check the lateral fuel balance.

@@robertmcmahon4549 get to 35,000 with straight afterburneronce you get there pitch down to -20 on hud, once you hit 20,000 ft again start to pitch up but Make sure as you’re pitching up you try to keep the G’s inbetween 1.2-1.4 (it’s pretty easy just barely pull up on stick) then once your to the point of nose angle of 10% on hud you can usually stay there until you get to mach 3+… then at the point turn on the scram jet the four dot button that’s right next to the toggle to turn the battery on, you gotta click that on as well, then you accelerate hard until you reach mach 10 (easy to get to mach ten above 230,000 ft)

PLEASE READ: I need a bit of help, just got the Xbox Series X for Christmas with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and and the T.Flight Hotas One. I am extremely interested in aviation and flight so when the movie came out in June and being a fan of the original, I had to go see it, so here I am with the Darkstar and I thought I should try to go Mach 10 like the movie but as soon as I enable Afterburner, eventually take off and pitch the aircraft nose up 30°, I lose all my speed and end up losing all the Mach and speed that I had gained up, looking for something I’m doing wrong or anything like that or plainly just a a bit of help due to concern because everyone else can do it.

Ensure the afterburner is actually on. Switching to the external view and watching the exhaust color change is one way to verify the AB is on. Don't worry about going upside down or climbing at 30 degrees nose up pitch. Climb at a speed of 300 knots or so and get to 30-35,000 feet. Once there and leveled off, enable the switch and the button (2 actions) for the scram jets, then let the indicated airspeed reach around 600 knots and then start a gradual climb. The airspeed may increase slowly, but once 500 is reached, it starts to accelerate faster. As soon as the Darkstar exceeds Mach 3, the scram jets will activate. Keep the climb going and get up to 200,000 feet (at least) and you will hit Mach 10. Good Luck.

Did you make two actions to activate the scram jet? Flip the switch and press the 4 squares behind the stick as shown in the video. If you did, you must reach mach 3 for the scramjets to activate.

It’s a game. Temperature has an effect on Mach as well as pressure. Others have reached Mach 11 in the sim. Who knows what happened after the update yesterday.

I tried to do this for a solid hour and could not get it. I would do just like you in the video and be that same speed as you when I angled back up to 20 degrees would speed up to match 1.5 and then slow down

Make sure the afterburners are engaging. A keybind may have to be set. Go to 30,000’ and stay level until reaching 500 knots on the airspeed indicator then start a climb. Once the scram jets are turned on they will ignite at Mach 3. Let me know if that works.

*0:27* - _"The takeoff is conventional."_ No, sir. It is not. Only engines one and two turn on, and the jet does *_NOT_* simply take off in a "conventional" manner for me. In fact, I can't even get the thing off the ground.

Engines 1-2 are turbine engines. Engines 3-4 are scram jet engines which are used from Mach 3 to Mach 10. Only two engines operate at a time. I’m not sure why you are having issues taking off. If nothing happens during rotation, reloading the flight works for me.

Go into the content manager and delete the Darkstar, then reinstall it. See if that works. I’m not sure what else to suggest other than posting a question in the official MSFS forum.

275,000 feet is the highest MSFS will let it go. Not sure of the max altitude without scramjets or the top speed.

@@branleuret6773 Before i knew about the scramjets when i first downloaded it i got to 275k Mac 3.2. Last night i flew from L.A to JFK took about half hr ish @ 275k and Mac 10.0.

The airplane goes down or the speed goes down? Mach 10 will be the easiest to reach at maximum altitude (250,000') which is the limit of the simulator.

Bind a button to a piece of hardware for the afterburner or push the throttle all the way forward with the mouse. SHIFT F4 will engage the afterburner.

Make sure afterburners are engaged. Once they are, climb to 30000 feet and accelerate to 600-700 knots then start a climb. While level at 30,000’, turn on the switch under the guard on the left side of the panel and the 4 green squares to activate the scramjet which will happen at Mach 3.1-3.2.

It won't go past 3.73 and the main engines stayed while the other two were off.....

Around 3.2 Mach the scram jets should activate. To activate the scram jets, press the button with 4 squares on the lower right side of the panel and the switch on the top left under the red guard. Once the scram jets turn on the main engine will shut down.

@@kotiksae did you flip the switch under the red guard on the left side of the panel and press the 4 squares on the right side of the panel to activate the scram jets? From there, the airplane has to be climbed up to 150,000’+ to reach Mach 10. If you did all that make sure until fuel in all tanks is at 100% when starting out.

Honestly, she was surprisingly easy to land. I do a lot of Nighttime ILS Flights so I'm used to using the Instruments and Virtual Terrain on the Glass Cockpit to land.

Climb to 275,000 feet. That’s the limit of the sim. You should be able to get Mach 10 up there.

How high were you when the overspeed happened? Mach 3.5 may have been reached at too low of an altitude where the indicated airspeed was beyond the limit.

What is the physical theory of the airplane flying invert?

Theoretically, if the airplane does not have inverted systems (fuel, oil, hydraulic), it could have positive Gs the whole time while pulling the nose down to increase speed by starting the nosedive. In MSFS Mach 3 can be attained (to activate scramjets) without going inverted.
