It's a simplified form of declension, it's called oblique case in English. The problem is that as long as you keep thinking while you speak it means it won't come natural. As long as you don't use it in real life and make a ton of mistakes regularly it would seem too hard. There is also another problem. There isn't enough encouragement to speak Hindi by Indians. As soon as you see a gora you start speaking English

I was taking classes in Jaipur but had to drop those when I moved to Kerala. It's quite frustrating when everyone keeps telling you to watch Hindi movies and TV shows. It's not that simple! Without knowing the grammar and the sentence structure it's literally impossible to progress beyond a certain point 😭 Phew! End of rant. Films and songs taught me a lot of Hindi words and some simple expressions, but once I got a textbook and started learning grammar, I was able to learn SO much more from the same films and songs. Before I would be so confused when I saw something like "yeh ghar" versus "is ghar mein" because I would have no idea why people were using "is" instead of "yeh," but once I got a book and saw websites that actually explained why this happens, things made a lot more sense to me and I was less lost. Before I would see "pahad" and wonder if "pahadon" was a different word that had a totally different meaning, but because I actually read a grammatical explanation about why words change like that, now I know what's happening and am not endlessly confused.

I may have been the one who said to watch Bollywood movies + subtitles to learn Hindi, but obviously I didn't mean exclusively that. You definitely can learn Hindi if you *supplement* it with Hindi films with subtitles, but obviously not on its own. You need to learn sentence structure, syntax, etc. in a formal way. What I found was the best way to learn is to turn off the overly inquisitive part of your brain. Don't ask WHY things are the way they are, just accept it as a quirk of the language. Otherwise you'll just get confused. At least that's how I learn foreign languages. *shrug*

A foreigner can't learn an Indian Language just by watching movies and stuff...but an Indian can learn another Indian Language by watching TV or movies etc... because all Indian languages has a lot of similarities ...I'm from Karnataka where the main language is Kannada...but many of them are fluent in Tamil, Telugu,Hindi, Malayalam etc..they learnt those languages just by watching movies TV programs etc....because the way of forming sentences ,Grammar is similar ... But for a foreigner it's almost impossible to learn an Indian Language from movies ...because English is way different from our language...that's why some of Indians find it difficult to learn English...

Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada are all related (but from a totally different language family than Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Punjabi, etc.) so that's why you can understand the others if you know 1 of them Other than grammar and script, English is similar to Hindi because they are from the same language family so many things are common and easily comprehensible

Hi again Karl. What about recommendations for learning materials? I know about your book, but it is basically about tips on how to learn more effectively, right? I think the most used in the market are TEACH YOURSELF HINDI, ASSIMIL HINDI, and COLLOQUIAL HINDI. What are the books you are using in your own courses? Are there good materials available in India that are targeted to foreign learners?

You're right about never being done learning a language. Like you I speak english and I still make mistakes. I often mess up "than" and "then". I also mistake "woman" and "women" some times. Lets not even talk about all my grammatical mistakes. For not native speakers english must be a nightmare. We have words like "lead" which means two different things, they're pronounced differently, but they're spelled the same.

I guess Hindi would come easier to south Indian viewers like me because all India languages are connected through Sanskrit.
