so nice to see someone talk about Jazz from Japan, I started collecting artists from Japan in the last couple of years and there's so much heat that came out from there. We have been pretty fortunate with the BBE releases that cover some of those artists. Totally agreed, Masaru Imada's Planets is an outstanding record, and such a bonus to get Yuji Imamura on one of the tracks. His Air (TMB-3006) album is out of this world, one of my best discoveries in the last 10 years...There's also one album that probably could've topped it all off for me, I know BBE had issues with the vinyl and it only came on CD as a re-issue (managed to score an original earlier this year), and that is Masao Nakajima Quartet - "Kemo-Sabe" - modal jazz at it's finest. Great to see you venturing into You-tube, love the Instagram posts, but nice to see these videos. thanks again

I really wish Kemo Sabe was on vinyl but did hear it digitally and it sounds fantastic. I’ll keep an eye out for Air. It definitely wasn’t on my radar even though I love TBM titles

Deep Jazz and Columbia Japan rereleased Jiro Inagaki's "In The Groove" this year and it's a must have if you're into JJazz. Also coming from Japan, Octave Lab re-released all three Shamek Farrah records (two originaly from Strata East and one for Ra Records). Another JJazz gem released this year is Ryo Kawasaki's Juice on Mr. Bongo. Roy Ayers' Virgo Vibes on Nature Sounds, Sun Ra's "The Futuristic Sounds" on Craft, the two box sets of Ornette (Blue Note and Contemporary), Art Blakey + Monk and Coltrane's My Favorite Things (both 2lp sets on Atlantic) are also worth mention

Great review and valuable information, thank you! I bought a few weeks ago BBE’s Song Island and Shamek Farah and Norman Person Live after I streamed them and thought they were worth it. I didn’t know anything about BBE even though I had some of their albums like Push on my wish list, glad you pointed it out. I have a sealed copy of Bill Evans original that I had forgotten about it for many years and been playing the digital reissue on Qobuz, unfortunately, I missed the vinyl copy from KG/Craft and been looking for it. I have Speaker Corners copy of We Get Requests and just bought the Acoustic Sounds version, I love this album. I’m a big fan of Pablo Records, they’re inexpensive and sound amazing. I’ll keep in mind if I hear good recording of jazz albums and let you know, I’m interested in learning too. Merry Christmas!

I was absolutely thrilled that Max Roach’s Members Don’t Get Weary’ and ‘We Insist!’ were reissued in 2022. As far as sound quality goes, I think George Michael’s ‘Older’ sounded absolutely astonishing on vinyl. Fantastic album!

Great video. More music to explore. I obtained my copy of the Yakhal' Inkomo album on Bandcamp. I can't speak to the vinyl quality since I got the cd. But it is great. And Impex shows Matador is awaiting repress, which is good for those of us who missed it the first time around.

Nailed them. I haven't opened the Matador yet---will maybe tonight ...The McGee is really nice and to me a bit underappreciated in this world of Miles Davis etc...I'd sure like to see another Clifford reissue or two done in 2023!...Have a great 2023---JG

My favourite 2022 reissues/archival releases that are not in the TP or AS series are the three albums that WallenBink put out with Erich Kleinschuster Sextett. Fantastic music w Joe Henderson, Clifford Jordan, Charles Tolliver and others recorded 68-71. AAA cut by Sean Magee, great sounding and looking. Limited to 1,000 each. Highly recommended.

Thanks, great video! More music to discover, even if I already have most of those releases. Agree on the matador and the verve acoustic sounds which are amazing... do you know Sam records? One guy from Paris, is releasing great vintage french recording sessions. Sound is quite good, music is always burning! December release: Un temoin dans la ville, soundtrack with barney wilen! Julien

Regarding stuff you may have missed, it’s probably a stretch to call this jazz, but there was recently a great AAA 45-rpm reissue of Gil Scott Heron’s Pieces of a Man. It seems to have flown under the radar a bit, and now it’s challenging to find.

Little touch of distortion on track two. I sent it back and got a second which had the same issue. My set up sailed through the PoH controversy so not my turntable. Still, I kept the second as the music is superb.

Nice round up! I also love the KoB and Blue Train reissues this year. I got the same stereo version of Blue Train, mostly because it had the extra takes on it and I already have a nice standard copy. The booklet and packaging in general was just better for something that was supposed to be a 'definitive' copy. I'm not entirely sold on it being the end all, be all like the KoB repress is, but it does sound wonderful to me. I have a few mentions: Any of the Craftman Records TBM reissues - Tsuyoshi Yamamoto (Midnight Sugar, Misty); Ayako Hosokawa (Mr. Wonderful, w/Masaru Imada, w/T. Miyama); Yama and Jiro's Wave (Girl Talk); Isao Suzuki (Blow Up!, Blue City), etc. All fantastic reissues of quite expensive original albums. Still, these aren't exactly cheap reissues to source in the US, but well worth the effort if you do not already have copies. The Venus Records reissues released this year. Too many to name. All of their reissues sound just as good as the originals to me (they likely are just re-releases/new pressings using the same masters as original) Craft Recordings' small batch reissue of Relaxin' from the Miles Davis Quintet (side note: they have a small batch of Impressions of Black Orpheus up for preorder now) We Release Jazz's reissues of Ryo Fukui's catalog. All essentials, IMO. Scenery is the absolute must-have if you can only get one. But get them all if you can. They are hard to find as originals, even in Japan. I believe only Scenery was issued in 2022, but wanted to mention them all. Alfa records' reissue of Casiopea's Mint Jams (more J-Jazz/Fusion than straight Jazz, but one of the best of the genre). Fairly affordable for a pristine pressing of this classic that is getting more expensive every day. I also really liked the AP/Verve reissue of John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman. Generally impressed with all of the AP/Verve impulse reissues, frankly.

I have a really later, probably like the 9th pressing LOL of the "Ella and Louis" on super thin 100 gram vinyl. It still sounds really impressive, however the new Acoustic Sounds version blows it away. I hope Acoustic sounds eventually does some of the Cal Tjader Verve stuff. The Chick Corea/Stan Getz sessions would be great too.

27:00 hello ! Thank you so much for this video. I didn’t heard about this « J Jazz Series » by BBE. I will check this Out. I managed to get recently Masahiko Togashi « Session in Paris - vol. 1 » under the We Want Sound label. I couldn’t get the 45rpm 2021 reissue Of it (another label). If you don’t have It, I recommand this album. Thanks also for the Pyramids Boxset. I don’t know this group. I like recent music by Idris Akamoor, though. Take care. Bruno

The We Get Requests sticker isnt actually true. It was cut from a new tape made from the original 3 track. Sort of making it a remix as well. The OG tapes are gone.

I’ve heard you say you’re in Atlanta. I am, too, and I wonder if there is a good jazz record store here? I’ve yet to find one. Or, do you buy all yours online? Your collection looks better than any store I’ve ever seen in this town. No one has anything of quality and it’s all scratched up used stuff. I imagine you bought your McIntosh gear online or elsewhere, too. I’ve never seen that for sale here.
@hifijunkieTX
@hifijunkieTX Жыл бұрын
When I lived in Atlanta, Criminal Records was the only store that ever had any sort of quality jazz pressings, and it was hit or miss. Sweet Melissa records occasionally had some harder to find jazz albums if you're willing to brave the parking situation there and the incredibly cramped shop. Prices are hit or miss too vs market. Really, record stores only reward people who can go very often to catch new things right as they come in. I always had better luck more consistently with just shopping on discogs. Evolution Hifi & Theater and Hifi Buys were two stores I remember having some pretty good gear. I believe the former carries McIntosh gear (granted, it's going to be new gear and not vintage)

My Mc gear I found on Facebook Marketplace and had a local tech refurbish the units. As far as jazz goes, I agree generally speaking that ATL isn’t the best town for it. You kind of have to look everywhere, on a regular basis to come up with decent stuff. That being said, Criminal, Mojo, Sweet Melissa’s, Waterloo Sunset, Ella Guru and even Fantasyland have been pretty good to me in aggregate over the years
