The Gloom Stalker / Assassin is scary good. I've played a few of those over the years. I've looked at the other sub-classes, but not as good. Rangers were always one of my favs. 2024 changed that a bit due to the Monks being improved enough to overtake the Ranger for me.

Many years ago, I used to play an online game that was loosely based on the lore of the Forgotten Realms. In that game, rangers are a prestige fighter class and one of only two or three classes that can dual wield two weapons of the same weight, so paired longswords instead of an offhand dagger, for example. They can also camouflage themselves in forests or tundra and then ambush their enemies for massive surprise attacks. Very powerful.

That’s a neat way to make rangers feel unique!

@litrpgadventures6902 Their truly unique ability is a spell "create ranger staff". One-handed staves that are cursed so you can't give them away but have a pretty high DC stun effect.

A Ranger would be a great choice for the Icewind Dale campaign in which surviving arctic-like conditions is a rough challenge to overcome.

Back in 4e my favorite class was ranger. It had no magic but was like a nature variation of the rogue (which I multiclassed to get another skill to my rep) Then in Pathfinder 1e the ranger has five instances of Favored Enemy and I think four of Favored Terrain, giving stacking bonuses against enemies of the chosen types and bonuses to skills used in those certain terrains. Then layer on the spells and skills. Overall rangers have amazing potential if used correctly.

Totally agree-rangers can be amazing if you know how to use them. In 4e, I loved how they were all about martial combat and skills, kind of like a nature-themed rogue. Multiclassing with rogue to stack even more skills? That’s genius. Pathfinder 1e really cranked it up, though. Those Favored Enemy bonuses are no joke, especially when they stack over time. By higher levels, you’re a nightmare for your chosen enemy types. Same with Favored Terrain-you get so many bonuses it’s like the game rewards you for just existing in the wild. And then you throw spells on top? Rangers are sneaky, deadly, and surprisingly versatile. Definitely one of the most underrated classes if you play them right. Respect for showing them some love!

My first character, decades ago, was a ranger. The class doesn’t really fit into games where Player vs Environment are hand-waved away. That’s why so many think of the ranger as just a ranged weapon combatant. Players in the game in the most recent editions don’t remember the days of preparing for months-long campaigns against an orc tribe in the wilds. They don’t understand buying arrows by the hundreds and an extra bow or two along with enough food to last for several weeks. They just think of one combat, not several months of combats. By the time a ranger gets above the levels where they get that Woodland stride ability, terrain doesn’t slow them down. A prairie is a road to them. A forest is a road to them. Even a mountain is a road to them. I can remember a game once where the Ranger and druid split off from the rest of the party to ride ahead and warn a town about an incoming attack, because the rest of the party would slow them down. The abilities made it into later editions, but the conditions where those shine didn’t. Rangers are a fantastic class. The game has just changed so they aren’t a necessary class. In the old days, you didn’t even think of traveling away from a road without at least one ranger in the party. I can remember one campaign where all of the players were playing multiclass Ranger/something because of their utility.

@@litrpgadventures6902 I've heard of the movie: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, but I don't understand your response. Am I to infer that they imply the Ranger is versatile? With that, I agree. I wanted some clear rules that provide in combat Actions, Skill uses, Party Buffs: Ignore difficult Terrain? Bonus Movement? Something that makes playing the ranger feel as cool as they describe in the video.
@litrpgadventures6902
@litrpgadventures6902 29 күн бұрын
Haha, yeah, sorry about that-I was referencing Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy! What I meant was rangers are super versatile, kind of like how the movie’s title breaks down into different roles. Let me explain better. Rangers actually do have some solid features that make them feel cool to play. For example, ignoring difficult terrain is a big one. In Pathfinder, rangers get bonuses in their favored terrain, and in D&D 5e they have abilities like Land’s Stride that let them move through rough areas without slowing down. It’s such a ranger vibe-like, “Nature doesn’t slow me down, I own this forest.” Then there’s mobility. Pathfinder lets you tweak your build for faster movement, and in 5e you’ve got spells like Longstrider to stay one step ahead of enemies. It might not feel flashy, but it can be clutch in combat or exploration. Rangers also shine when it comes to party utility. Stealth-focused spells like Pass Without Trace in 5e are amazing because they make the whole party better, not just you. And their combat skills, like Hunter’s Mark or Favored Enemy bonuses in Pathfinder, make them reliable damage-dealers against priority targets. I get what you’re saying about wanting clear actions in combat, though. Rangers can sometimes feel like they’re playing the long game, focusing more on preparation and positioning than on immediate flashy moves. But when they’re in their element-whether it’s tracking enemies, ambushing them in their favored terrain, or using their spells to tilt the odds-they can really shine. Hopefully that makes more sense! And yeah, my bad for the rushed response earlier-thanks for letting me circle back.

The problem is not that rangers are versatile -- it is that they are more generalists and not that good at anything. Kind of like how Bards started to be in the AD&D 2e PHB. Now Bards are probably the best class, even though I still prefer other classes. I think they pushed too hard to make Charisma the best stat -- and no longer the dump stat it used to be.
