!!IMPORTANT NOTE!! Ethyl Mercaptan doesn't always smell the same. I find it has 3 different odors depending on the concentration. First odor may smell vaguely "warm" in low concentrations, like a slightly late stove lighting. In medium concentrations, like during a slow gas leak, it smells kindof like bad food. NOT ALWAYS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS! More like yucky sausage and slightly burned rice. Third is high concentration, like during a major gas leak, or smelling a part that was attached to the tank for a long time (took like 6 months to air out that stupid piece of copper). It. Is. Awful. It's almost a sickly metallic smell as part of it. But not like iron. It's super hard to describe. But it's awful. You will know it if you ever sniff a tank up close or something, or if you want to keep some of the piping when the replace it. Ugh. And it sticks to EVERYTHING. Hands, clothes, metal, glass, you name it, it will probably smell like it.

Some concentrated water conditioners for aquariums (especially Seachem Prime) have components that release a strong sulfur smell after they've been in contact with air.
