Karina Staneva in some jurisdictions people sentenced to life in prison still can be pardoned, normally after 1/3 of their service time. Probably, it’s to avoid the situation when some governor want to pardon a prisoner for some reason (political, corruption, other personal) but can’t do it until that person serves let’s say 50 years of his 150. In other jurisdictions if you have multiple crimes you serve the longest jail time (ex, you killed someone as a gang member and hit someone with your car during the police chase causing serious damage to health you serve not the combined time 15+25+7, but the longest which is 25 years). So, it’s pretty much depends on the legal system whether it’s based on Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Napoleonic European, Mixed one like Scandinavian etc
