Entrepreneurship in the EDC community feels like it has exploded in the past few years, and I was always frustrated that I couldn't find higher quality mechanical pencils when machined pens were so available. Your channel has brought some new makers into light that I wouldn't have known about otherwise - thank you! I would love to have a Spoke Model 4 for the customization factor, but every time I think about it, I remember that their products don't come with a clip as it's a 'desk only' model - if they offered it as an accessory, even, I would be willing to pay that premium.

My favorite mechanical pencil is from the brand delhi from aliexpress. Only pencil i've really ever had. It has an aluminum barrel, a spiral textured grip and a thin design. Its original look wasn't too appealing to me until i scratched off the paint and broke the clip off out of highschool anxiety and left it looking silver and like it can take more of a beating than it actually can. I think i just like having a pencil that is uniquely mine and i could spot it and never get it mixed up with others. Also a 2 dollar price tag is pretty much budget limit for a third world country student.

Don't see the Titanium option on the IJ Instrumentals website. My preferred variant is already pretty pricey for a mechanical. Do you remember the price or if the finish effects price at all? Btw, a note about the Lava treatment on the rOtring Newton. It is prone to premature wear. I have a ballpoint pen version that I had decided to put into regular rotation years ago, thinking that the material was indestructible. Well... within just a few years, the grip wore smooth. No longer the same texture as the rest of the body. I had also seen sometime back a photo someone posted for the fountain pen, showing the lava had worn away down to the brass. So, nice to have as a conversation piece & beauty to behold, but not really wise to put to daily use. That is, unless you wrap the grip in some tape or rubber sheath to protect it.

Great videos! I often reference them when deciding which pencil to buy. I also use out of production pencils and pens in my top ten lists because I like them but also because I hope that perhaps the companies will bring them back again. Do you find that some companies bring their writing utensils out of production, at least in the US, faster than others? I am thinking of how quickly Pilot ended Fure Fure Corone and Sprinter, and switched over to the 2020(?) line. Meanwhile, I still see Pentel Sharps, Quicker Clickers, and Twist Erases for sale though slightly modernized. Kind of makes me sad when my older pencils give out and there's not a readily available replacement for them. Anyways, keep up the great videos! They satisfy my daily dose of nerding out over writing implements. XD

Thanks for the review. I think you should have mentioned the price of the IJI Model 9, because at $115 (plus shipping to the US) it's more than FOUR times the cost of a Rotring 600, which is utterly ridiculous - premium product or not! On another note, I live just north of Edinburgh so I'll see if I can knock some sense into these guys and bring the price down a little. ;)
@FanPhys4 жыл бұрын
I also just realised that the pencils have Pentel P200 internals, so all you're paying for is the machined barrel. OOOOFT!!!!!
@ClutchSituation4 жыл бұрын
The idea behind the internals is that you use a set of internals that is the industry standard, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel and just produce something inferior. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
@FanPhys4 жыл бұрын
@@ClutchSituation Yeah I have no issue with that - I own all four of the P200 pencils and they are my go-to for drafting and sketching. @@ClutchSituation mine works great so far. Nothing compares when you go to .3 or .2 mm leads. I ended up smoothing the sharp edge of the Pilot Automac's sleeve so it would not be scratchy on paper with any type of tooth to it. For me, no mechanical pencils i have tried, or on this list is perfect. I have tried the Rotring 800, but it did not feel premium at all. The non-retractable tip in the Rotring 600 is a deal breaker. I'm also picky on the look, the Sharp Kerry looks very nice, but I don't like having a cap, it requires more "effort" to remove it. The tactile turns has a revealing eraser, which makes it not as nice as if it was hidden in a cap. The instruments clip is ugly. So for me the best is the pentel graphgear 100, but its not perfect, so i will design and machine a pencil body and keep the mechanism of the graph gear. Wish me luck!
