+maugos I know the feeling, the fact it was just him laughing throughout it actually angered me a bit. Sure for me the only spot that legit scared me was the basement maze... But it was the first pc game I ever had, and when it came out, IN 1993, it made cd rom drive sales skyrocket because back then, it was scary. Today it IS laughable at how not scary it is, but '93 was a different time. I just wish Jirard had actually talked about it instead of just laugh the whole time.

+maugos I just commented on playing that as a kid. I mean I had doom and diablo when growing up with two brothers 5&10 years older than me so I was desensitized. However I never played it alone at night which is why Parasite Eve still brings memories of fear. I refuse to revisit the game as an adult as it would ruin the memory of being up past midnight wondering what the hell was going on. One of the worst things about being an adult is nothing in the entertainment world can shock/scare you anymore. Even the new game SOMA was more of a philosophical journey (that I still enjoyed) than something scary.

+maugos Yeah, it sort of felt to me like laughing at elderly people for them not being able to stand up or walk easily... I mean, no it is certainly not scary by today's standards, but it was an early experiment in the genre, and at least deserves some respect, instead of just being laughed out of the room for being old.

I agree with number 9. I think Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is easily the worst in the FNAF series. I did not find 3 remotely scary or even creepy in the slightest the first time I've played the game compare to the other games that I've played & seen. I think the other FNAF games are still creepy & can still give multiple people jumpares, especially the fourth game, which is often considered to be the scariest in the series, but FNAF3's jumpscares can often feel really predictable & often kind of lazy at times, especially with the phantom animatronics. I also didn't find FNAF3 to be all that atmospheriec compare to the other FNAF games. The setting in 3 just felt so bland for my taste.

FNAF 4: BEST: Best mechanics, most complete story with most amount of interaction during story bits. Scariest monsters. FNAF 2: SECOND BEST: Most mechanics, literally dripping with hints and lore, and tons of enemies. FNAF 1: THIRD BEST: Good start, good enemies, unique mechanic, good build-up. FNAF 3: WORST: Good amount of enemies but repetitive and by far has the least amount of content. Build up without good payoff and unsatisfying ending (either of them).

@MaxOutOfTen
@MaxOutOfTen 9 жыл бұрын
+TakTheFox I do agree with this list, but there are a few things about fnaf 3. It's repetitive and predictable because it's no longer based on luck. You have full control over what happens next. you have to quickly figure out the next move to keep yourself alive and then plan the next move. that said, it's not a good horror game because it IS predictable once you get the hang of it. It's strange because fnaf 3 is the first and only one to have only 5 active nights (night 1 doesn't count) so it does have the least amount of content. the unsatisfying ending, however, is intentional. I kept people talking about the game because of all the questions it didn't answer, and all the new questions it caused. that's something Cawthon is good at. Keeping people talking about his games. The real unsatisfying ending is that Scott says FNAF World (which will be the worst in the series, btw) won't have anything about the story. So all we have left is a movie. Scott wants to answer our questions with a movie. Not a game. I would be fine if it wasn't even a horror game. I'd be fine with a bunch of Atari style minigames as a game wrapping up the story. But no. all we're stuck with is a crap movie, a stupid rpg, and a double-locked box that will soon be forgotten. Sorry. rant over.

It’s certainly an unnerving experience to be permanently rooted to the floor and unable to run as you stare down creepy animatronics from down the hall, especially when they don’t move either and thus you cannot anticipate their next action like you would in a game like Amnesia where you can watch a grunt from a closet wander around and go outside and breath a sigh of relief.

I think it can nail the scare factor SOMETIMES, mostly if you are very young and haven't played many horror games yet, like me when I first found out about it, but I DESPISE the gameplay. It's just so basic, you are literally sitting in one position for the entire game, you cannot explore, you cannot move at all really, except for the later games but you might as well just sit there seeing you move 3 inches in front or the the side of yourself. The scares just get annoying and tedious after a while and even me when I was 7 wasn't scared of this game when I first heard about it. The gameplay is so unbelievably stale and I do not understand at all how they made, like, what, 10 GAMES??

When I played Deadly Premonition, I came to the conclusion that the game was purposely polarizing. I agree with almost everything you say in this video, especially what you say in the Amnesia part. The, perhaps, scariest game I've played recently was White Night - a riddleful mystery horror that revels in making you feel completely lost, hopeless and weak. Pair this with no action sequences (other than fleeing) and an interesting lighting mechanic, and you have a really scary game.

Of everything I expected to see in a Completionist video, clips from Phantasmagoria were none of them. You pretty much summed up 7th Guest, though. People like to talk about how much that game scared them as a kid, but man they must have been afraid of everything as kids. The wandering around music of the SPOoOoOoOKY mansion is generic elevator music. Half of the cutscenes are indecipherable. Sometimes the music drowns out what people say (Deadly Premonition also had this problem at times, though), and it's all just so doofy.

"Just because you're trying to survive in a scary environment does not equal a truly scary game." That's the truth. You need investment and pacing too. That quote also sums up how I felt about Shinji Mekami's other games, with the exception of the RE:Make I never found any of his works scary after a point even if I've always appreciated his game design. Good video as usual.

I haven't seen "Saw" nor do I plan too because gore is not scary. Making you sick or uncomfortable is meant to be an enhancement to the experience, not the centerpiece. Tons of people are guilty of misusing "gore" due to lack of talent and understanding of the medium they are working with. A good example I can think of is "300"where there are moments of bloods and guys flying across the screen. And it helps enhance the moments of badassness of these soldiers holding off an entire army.

You can bypass the darkness as an element and use light as an element in horror by having the enemies cloak in light but you can see them in shadow. I can guarantee that if I bothered to look through the comments enough, I'd find someone screaming every insult imaginable because he put Evil Within or Alan Wake on here.

+Oguzhan Gungor the fact that you say "shouldn't" kinda counters what you said. Yeah they shouldn't need to but they do need to. It removes the feeling that he is saying these are the best/worst because people don't seem to natively understand its his opinion.

Deadly Premonition is an absolute masterpiece. I could even do without the horror parts because I'm not too crazy about the quick time events and just enjoy the random weirdness. It was somewhat creepy to drive around at night and encounter one of the giant monster doggos for the first time.

I didn't find Amnesia: The Dark Descent the least bit frightening honestly. The fact that there were no weapons meant that there was never going to be an in-game situation that I could not run or hide from. Once I realized this fact, any and all tension left me. From a pure game design standpoint, I knew that I was and would always be, perfectly fine. Dead Space 2 on the other hand is the game that scared me more than any other, and I imagine that if I had played the original Dead Space first, then it would hold that honor.The atmosphere, and truly threatening encounters made that game scarier than Amnesia ever could be. Death might have stood around every corner, and the only thing that could stop it was my own ability, resolve, and reactions. That was infinitely more frightening and tense than "Oh, hey, a cupboard/movable crates/obvious escape route... Monsters in 5, 4, 3, 2,, 1...." Everyone is scared by different things though. And I can understand how and why people found Amnesia scary. Even if I couldn't relate to it. Many people find FNaF as laughable of an attempt at horror as I found Amnesia. A few no-win scenarios peppered throughout Amnesia requiring real effort to escape from, would have done that game a world of good.

That's a fair list (I was wondering when Saw would appear!) I have to say that as bad as The Typing of the Dead is, the drills really helped my touch typing even as a secretary who wrote a lot of letters. As far as people giving you a hard time on DS2; Yes you are The Completionist but the quiet ones that aren't raging understand that you also are a human being and have a life/can make mistakes. 0:41 I don't know why people are so mad. You got all the achievements right? That should be all that is necessary when it comes to completing games. 5:00 All the games in the series are weak in scare factor. +jake manning Until Dawn is good in concept, it's even good on the first run. But it has a big flaw, plot armor. Certain characters can never die until a very specific part of the story, the ending. No matter how badly you play, they'll live until then.

Something that's interesting about RE5, originally there was a system in play where if you stayed out in the sun too long you'd start hallucination about zombies and other terrifying creatures. This could have been an interesting take, since if you waste your ammo trying to kill the hallucinations, it could potentially put you in a bad situation with the actual zombies. Maybe that explains the tagline "You will fear the sun." or something like that.

Poor Alan Wake, the devs have said on multiple accounts it was supposed to be an action game in the first place with spooky themes not the other way around. I think they made that more clear in the sequel though, so whatever.

I think that you picked a lot of low-hanging fruit for this list. Resident Evil 5 and 7th Guest are some really lazy picks - and I don't really think that neither House of the Dead 2 and Deadly Premonition was intended to be true horror games anyway. Or at very least I didn't go into either of them expecting a true horror game. If I personally had to pick a game/series which I personally didn't find to be scary it would have to be the Dead Space games. They are really fun action games but other than a somewhat spooky atmosphere I really didn't find them very scary at all - it was pretty much all just some very predictive jumpscares through and through.

Frankly, I had the same problem throughout the original Amnesia as well. It's not particularly scary when one half of the enemies are so blind that simply shoving your nose in a corner is enough to evade them with near 100% success, and the other half are completely restricted to water and have the attention span of a goldfish. The Shadow was the only particularly frightening aspect of the game, and the rest just served as a distraction from its eldritch horror.

Just like Twin Peaks, Deadly Premonition puts it's quirkiness above the scare factor. York goes around the town and creates relationships with the town's folk to help him solve the murder quicker and more effectively. If you help a couple organize their convenience store you get an extremely powerful weapon. What I'm saying is that the non-scary parts are just as important as the "scary" parts.

Okay, so while I loved A Machine for Pigs, I couldn't really take it very seriously. It felt very much like the developers wanted to design a walk-through experience, like a haunted house, and the gameplay was only introduced begrudgingly. It's no surprise these were the same people who did Dear Esther.

Hi, In regards to the 7ths guest: You need to remember the time period in which it was made. Also its main genre is a puzzle game. I think it was pretty creative to incorporate puzzles and survival...which oddly sounds like SAW about 20years before SAW...

My biggest issue with the Horror genre is that many devs don't seem to know what they want to do with their game. Horror can come in different shapes and sizes. Anxiety, disgust, oddity, and yes horror can create horror.

I'd argue that Deadly Premonition isn't a horror game. It gets filed under that genre because you fight zombies and it's got creepy bits, and also that's the closest standard genre to describe it. It's more like a supernatural mystery game. I just describe it as Twin Peaks: The Game.

I don't think House of the Dead 2 really belongs to this list. It just has sort of a "parodic" feel to it, with laughable voice acting, "scary-ish" music that fits more to some Halloween special from a children show, and a VERY goofy plot. Some creepy stuff happens here and there, but it's kinda clear that scaring people off wasn't a real goal of its developers. HotD3 fits much better because SEGA tried to pull something darker and more serious with that one, yet it still wasn't even a little bit creepy.
