@@SpiderGansta Locks. A Soft lock I believe is when a character gets stuck. But you can get out of it, by say jumping over and over to dislodge yourself. A hard lock is when you have to reset. Gollum is so fascinating in how even after it's infamous reception that caused the developers, Daedalic Entertainment, to shut down their development division as a result the game is STILL being sold on store shelf's from my country Sweden. How has NO ONE bothered to remove this utter garbage of a game from the stores? The fact that Skull Island: Rise of Kong and The Walking Dead game hasn't shutdown Gamemill Entertainment from publishing games is utterly baffling to say the least. Surprised that The Day Before isn't here given how such a scam the game was that it shut down the developers very shortly after release. Silent Hill Ascension is a demonstration that the concept of "sinking to new lows" has ABSOLUTELY no limit and Konami will always find ways to somehow baffle gamers with these atrocious decisions.

One quest actually requires that you get arrested so that a secret police force can coerce you into working undercover for them, but that means you actually need to commit a crime first. ANY crime. No matter how small. Which means that, at some point in the game, any minor transgression you commit, even something as pathetic as accidentally picking up a drink in a bar that doesn't belong to you, will _instantly_ make you the MOST WANTED CRIMINAL IN THE UNIVERSE, and every time you warp somewhere or try to visit a city, you will be mercilessly hunted down until they can arrest you! Why would the Silent Hill devs create two different fully-animated and voiced cutscenes for each "vote" if one of them is never going to be seen, because it lost this "vote"? This is why I think the "not a vote" thing is literally true and they have already decided which results "win" because it's the cutscene that the devs have already put time, money, and effort into making.
@anon946910 ай бұрын
And then the 'pay to win' aspect is not just a money-sucker, but also allows them to avoid accusations of vote-rigging. "So 80% of people voted one way, but it went the other?" "...I guess Jeff Bezos was really invested in this Silent Hill mobile game."

Hey Steph! Once again it is that time of the year, so I am going to say thanks! There isn't many things in my life that are as constant as my admiration of your work. You have the wit and eloquence to entertain, the sharpness and memory the industry deserves and the rebellious point of view that makes you one of the only people in games media I truly trust. Thank you for your amazing dedication, never missing a monday and never failing to be insightful. Also 2023 continued the trend of transforming the jimquisition from the "videogame industry bad" show I appreciated into the menagerie of madness I love. You never turned a blind eye to the problems the industry had and will likely continue to have for a very long time, but you wrapped it all up in a packet that leaves me feeling entertained, educated and inspired, rather than disturbed and angry. Though there are still plenty of moments for that of course, Ubisoft still exists after all. The point however is that you truly do come across as happier, even in this episode when you feel sick as all hell but more across the year and ever since your coming out. Thank you for sharing that joy and thank you for getting back into written reviews. I know they have been coming for a while but this was the year I started reading them again because you credited those with revitalizing your love for gaming and truly it shows. weather you like a game or not the appreciation for the medium oozes from them and it is inspiring. Thank you as well for your own contributions to videogames. Your writing in Vampire survivors was great and reminded me of Jazzpunk wich I absolutely loved while truly being it's own thing. Thank god, as always, for you!

I think the best defense of Silent Hill is that it's not a game. I know we've heard this claim about games before. Particularly Walking Simulators. But at least those games have player input. What does the Silent Hill Ascension or whatever it's called have? It's a community poll so you don't even get to decide, the community does. It's a show with audience input.

Thank you, Steph, for playing these games, so I will never have to. I am surprised that Forspoken didn't make the list, though. I'm guessing it's because it came out in January, and so many other crap games came out after it.

Forspoken has terrible writing but gameplay wise, though not great, probably still wouldn't be enough to qualify. Day Before was probably released too late to make the list.
@gwen993910 ай бұрын
Forspoken was a bland corporate product but far from the real contenders for worst games of the year. The only reason it stuck around in people's heads as the worst possible thing is because chuds kept talking about how it made them turn inside-out from cringe, and because a black woman said it they associate it with wokeness, not the soulless corporate management creative overreach trying to be marvel-quippy because they think it's what the kids want.

Starfield actually blew my mind. Blew my mind with how dedicated Bethesda is to it's boring hand-holding chosen one plotlines. They wrote an in universe new game plus mechanic that allows you to hop realities... resetting the game world for a another run- and you still run into NPCs who are "essential" and cannot die because you need to talk to them once during a side quest at some point. Surely a setting with this premise would have been ripe for allowing players to lock themselves out of quests?- they literally get to reset the universe and not do that next time?

I'm surprised and disappointed that The Day Before didn't make the list. It's a looter shooter scam where the developers took the money, fled a few days later claiming bankruptcy, and are changing the company name for rebranding. Sill Hill sucks but, it's a Konami mobile game. Not sure why anyone would have high expectations considering the last Silent Hill Konami hyped up was a pachinko machine version.

I think Bethesda are in the state they are because their fans outright dismiss any criticism of their games. This lets the devs see lots of unwarranted support for their games, even when they are kinda shit. I'm still unclear how people thought Fallout 4 was a good game, let alone a good Fallout game.
