part of presenting is leaving time for people to process. Listening to someone speak fast for more than 15 minutes causes you to only remember the last 15 minutes of info after an hour of dialogue. Saying that does two things: First, it primes the viewer to expect it, so if it's something that *would* be jarring to someone, it's much less likely to happen because they know it's coming Secondly, and this is something I recognize because I also do it, it makes any criticism of the way he speaks (which is a trashy thing to complain about, regardless) completely null and void. There's no way to stop it, but talking about your perceived or real "flaws" is an effective way of neutering any complaints or insults about it. What I'm saying is, the man is a great...Uhhh, speaker, lecturer, presenter...? Whichever one he'd prefer, and I'm willing to bet that he's worked very hard for to get as good as he is at it.

As an ex gun hater, and now a potential gun owner, I thank you for the tips. In México, we can't own and/or purchase something bigger than 380 or .38 special, unless we inherited it or purchased it before the current laws were published. When being taught to use SCUBA and use a weapon, I wanted sensible, mature, proven experts. Not Cowboys... Paul Harrell is one of those, and should be listened to. He stakes his reputation every time he loads a video, and he keeps high standards. Anyone seeking information on firearms for self-protection should hear Harrell - agree or disagree later, but LISTEN to this guy. He's as knowledgeable and fair as anyone I've ever seen.

Fir sure, there's nothing he says that contradicts anyone else. It's just sensible in its own right. Some of these other gun channels seem to be aiming to convince of their knowledge and superiority to others rather than simple teaching. I'm not even a gun nut enough to watch a 30 minute gun video with no shooting and only 3 or 4 guns shown. I'm on my 4th PH vid and aim keen for more.

Well since Paul invited legal comments from an attorney’s perspective, I’ll give mine: everything he said in this video is 100% accurate, particularly the overview of the rules of engagement. I’ve been a criminal prosecutor since 1993, reviewed more than a few cases of citizen uses of force and officer-involved shootings. His general overview about the legal concepts that govern your use of a firearm are spot-on, and I’ll underscore that there are no bright-line rules to guide your actions; it’s case-by-case and what appeared reasonable under those unique circumstances. One big point Paul has occasionally touched upon: whatever you do, assume that your actions will undoubtedly be scrutinized by the police, prosecutors, and court system in light LEAST favorable to you (unless you live in Texas, maybe!), and every little thing you do and say will be used against you, so give some thought as to how you will act BEFORE and AFTER you use your firearm. Example- I believe George Zimmerman’s use of deadly force against Trevon Martin was complete legal and appropriate, yet he came as close as you can get to a 1st Degree Murder conviction as you’d want, in large part due to the way he was perceived (rightfully or wrongfully)- “wanna-be cop/defender of the community, itching to find a crime where none existed, etc,” - this may not be justified criticism but it doesn’t matter, because a great many people in the community, to include the state prosecutors bowing to public pressure, bought into it. So give some thought about each of the points Paul raises but recognize the seriousness of the discussion once you move off the internet and into the real world.

I've taken many training classes on firearms and personal defense using them. I've even become an NRA certified instructor to get the details down. The one thing I have learned - fortunately or unfortunately - is to think twice before getting involved trying to defend someone else or even using your firearm for self-defense unless you are cornered and have no other choice. There is no Mulligan using a firearm when you shoot someone. This is maybe the wrong lesson learned, but it all seems to point in the direction of walk away if you can. I carry plenty of firearm insurance just in case that day arrives.

I recently bought a few firearms. I haven't shot one or even handled one in probably 15 years. Within one week I looked up the laws of gun ownership and when, where and how I can carry them. I then contacted a couple of friends that are former and current police officers. I educated myself on what was available in my area and I could afford VS what I think I need for defense. I then legally passed the checks and purchased said firearms. I immediately continued to educate myself on guns and I still educate as much as I can take in. I also immediately bought the correct ammunition and shot each one numerous times to become familiar with the guns. In that check I also learned they work and work well. I also applied for a concealed carry permit on Saturday and I was approved the following Tuesday. All it takes is the want to properly educate yourself on any subject. We have a great advantage now. It's called KZbin. Sure you have to find the fake experts and bad information and ignore it. Then you find channels like Mr Harrell has here. Thank you for what you do sir. Also thank you for your service.

Re: Quick access to a firearm. I went to a home at the tail end of a multiple murder, where one final shot occurred upon our entry. The ex boyfriend knocked on the front door and the 20 year old son/brother answered. The ex BF immediately shot the brother in the throat. The brother fled to a neighbor, who called 911. The brother lived. The ex entered and shot the girlfriend in the abdomen, she fell to the floor, and then he shot her in the head. Dad must have gone to the top of the stairs to look down at the commotion, as evidenced by bullet holes behind where he would have stood. Also, on most the stairs were empty shell casings. The suspect shooting as he advanced. Inside the upstairs bedroom was dad face down on the carpet, one bullet hole in the back, another in the back of the head. Mom was dead in her bed. A bullet went through her hand and entered her forehead. Dad had a Ruger 9mm in his hand. It still had a trigger lock on it and no magazine in it. The magazine was in the closet and was unloaded. The suspect shot himself as we came in. Two morals of the story. 1. You are responsible for your own safety and security. 2. If you need your firearm, you will need it instantly. It had better be ready to go, and on your person or within arms reach. Great video as always....love your work.

Unless I'm proven wrong, isn't it best to leave home defense weapons just out of sight and teach the kids about gun use and safety? It's what a lot of old school parents believe in. It's like back in the 90s I knew not to drink random things under the kitchen sink and had very little to do with those "Mr. Yuk" stickers. It's a shame that family had to go out like that and the father was very unprepared.

Your tips on storing a "Tool" securely remind me of the three trade offs in data security. Confidentiality, Accessibility, and Integrity. Confidentiality: You must make sure that the users of the tools are the ones allowed to use it and only they have access. Accessibility: You cannot make the tools so secure that the users don't have access. Integrity: You must make sure that the tools are in working order and that the users know how to use them. Seems security is universal whether the tools used are a gun or data.

You seem to be demonstrating a trait of a fake expert... making sweeping generalizations. Communication is a two part relationship... and can fail on either side. The failure could be by the listener, or the failure can be the communicator, or a combination of all parties involved. A person can fail to accurately convey their meaning. It is the responsibility of the communicator to properly convey their meaning, with proper comprehension and articulation of the language they speak. The reason it is their responsibility, is because they are the one attempting to communicate information, they have a vested interest in successfully communicating that information. If the listener is not understanding, then the communicator must try to explain it differently, assuming they still care about conveying their meaning. If they don't care if their communication is successful... why bother the attempt at all? If the communicator accurately conveys their meaning with sufficient comprehension of the language and topic... and the listener intends on learning, then it is the listener's responsibility to play their role sufficiently, by listening and possibly asking questions or introducing counter points for clarification etc.. If they don't care enough about learning to effectively listen... then why bother the attempt at all?

@ It is a reference to a fairy tale called "Three Billy Goats Gruff" in which three billy goats try to cross a bridge that a troll lives under. The troll tries to eat the goats, but the goats outsmart the troll. "Troll" is also a term for people on the internet who make deliberately provocative statements in an attempt to get a rise out of people. Paul Harrell was taking advantage of this double meaning by making the literary reference to refer to these people who were being deliberately obtuse in the youtube comments of the previous video.

I am reminded of shooting back in the early 1980's - Guy rob a bank and exited from the bank took a shot at someone who then pulls his gun and shot him dead. The family of the bank robber tried to say his shot was not at anyone just trying to clear the people away from him. Courts wanted nothing to do with it and turn it down Video show gun pointed in the general direction of the person returning fire. Justified shooting because 1. gun pointed in his direction 2. gun was fired. But the guy was still charged with a misdemeanor crime of Discharged of a gun with in the city limits. The judge ordered a Fine $1 + Court cost then waived all fee's. I think it was more done to cover him in case of the family coming after him in civil court

I dealt with a similar situation involving a store owner shooting an armed robber. A certain part of the community got up in arms due to the race of the robber. The store owner wound up being charged with a simple misdemeanor though (I can’t remember the exact charge) he killed the robber. The judge and district attorney accepted his guilty plea and did not even fine him. He got his gun back and went home.

@@bluesonicstreak7317 Glocks are classified as restricted firearms yes, but you are able to get a restricted level PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence). However part of the reason the Glock was his recommendation was the magazine capacity, which is limited to 10 rounds in Canada rather than the 15 rounds in his model. Semiautomatic handgun magazines in Canada are limited to a maximum 10 cartridges (this includes both rimfire and centrefire semi-automatic handguns). The exception are magazines designed for one calibre that will function in handguns of a different calibre and hold a higher capacity. The RCMP give an example as follows: "Heckler and Koch P7 pistol chambered for 9mm Luger caliber: The magazine designed for the 40 S&W calibre variant of the pistol will hold 13 cartridges of 9mm Luger calibre and function in the 9mm Luger calibre P7 pistol. This is permissible as the maximum permitted capacity of the 40 S&W calibre magazine must be measured by the number of 40 S&W calibre cartridges it is capable of holding, which is 10 such cartridges in the case of the HK P7 pistol magazine." www.canadagunclub.com/p/gun-magazine-capacity-limits-in-canada.html www.canadagunclub.com/p/getting-your-gun-licence-in-canada-pal.html

It makes some sense. If you are assuming that the law was made so people couldnt just pull a loaded gun on an officer (yes, I know criminals dont follow the law etc.) then it would follow that having a gun in a state that it could be loaded in a second would either be included, or the whole law would be pointless. I've been a prosecutor now approaching 20 years, so I too will accept Paul's invitation to comment on Self-Defense. Paul's admonition to consult a local attorney is probably the most important thing he said with regard to this point. If an intruder enters your home, some States have the "Castle Doctrine" and "Stand Your Ground" rules. Other States, however, have laws requiring a home owner to retreat first, and only employ deadly force when it's the last possible option. And, what is "reasonable" in rural Texas may not be "reasonable" in urban San Francisco. You need a feel for what the people in your area believe is "reasonable" because, ultimately, it's those people on your jury that will decide if you were acting reaonable or not.

What you say is in fact one of the biggest problems, not just in regard to firearms ownership/usage, but in the broad sense the way our lives are controlled by the political and legal sectors. Why are there so many laws? Each State/Territory has a different set of laws and rules. Is America "one country" or is it a continent comprised of numerous countries? The law should be the same for each and every person in the USA, not the plethora of often vague interpretations as we see. I have advocated this here in Australia for many years, each state has different laws in relation to the same thing, supposedly mutual reciprocation was meant to bring things into a more level state across the whole of the country but the legal and political sectors maintain their own set of laws from state to state. Each motor vehicle driver should have the same set of rules right across the country, each firearms owner should have the same set of rules right across the country. Paul, I’m a relatively new gun owner in that I’ve owned a handgun and took training when I initially purchased a few years ago, have been to the range to practice some (not as much as I would have liked), but with recent events have looked into different types of other firearms for added home protection. I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate your videos. They’ve been extremely helpful and I enjoy how you clearly articulate details, with a bit of humor and an occasional “Shatneresk” pause 😊. Apologies for those who can’t comment above a 3rd grade level. Please keep up the great work!

I live in Tennessee. All firearms stores in the state are considered "essential" businesses and were allowed to stay open. The county I live in even declared itself a 2nd Amendment sanctuary. I feel blessed to have grown up and lived my life in Tennessee. It feels good knowing the political officials in my state recognize and respect the fact that firearms are part of this state's culture. Bought my first revolver today. Ruger SP101 .357 magnum with a 3.1 inch barrel. Really impressed with it so far. As he said, laws can vary greatly from place to place. I didn't know until a few days ago that in the state of Tennessee, as long as you are legally able to own a firearm and are in a vehicle that is legally allowed to be on the road, you can have a loaded concealed firearm in the vehicle without a permit. This includes handguns as well as long guns. This is allowed under the expanded castle doctrine. I doubt many other places allow that.

Thanks for the video! On the question of imminent danger, I remember a scenario that I learned about twice. Before I bought my first handgun, I took a class. Friends had tried to teach me shooting, and the results had always been poor and frustrating. Before giving up completely, I took a class taught through a local adult education program and taught by a local police department. As they went through a series of "Shoot - Don't Shoot" scenarios, they mentioned the case of a robbery at a convenience store. In the scenario, the robber gets a six-pack of beer and comes to the counter. He puts the beer on the counter and pulls a gun as the clerk starts to ring up the purchase. The clerk gives him the money and the robber walks to the front door of the convenience store. As the robber walks away, the clerk pulls a gun from under the counter and starts to shoot. At this point, the video stops and the instructors ask whether the clerk can make a justified shooting to the back of the robber. Most of us said that the clerk couldn't, but the police explained that the clerk could be justified in shooting. The robber was still in easy range to turn and shoot the clerk. The robber had threatened the clerk's life with a loaded gun. Furthermore, there are documented cases of robbers going to the door of the store to scan the parking lot before turning and shooting the clerk to eliminate the clerk as a witness. The police said that legally, the clerk could shoot but there's no absolute right answer of whether the clerk should shoot. In most cases, the robber will leave the store without shooting the clerk. If that's the robber's intention, then the clerk has survived and that's the most important point. If the clerk decides to shoot, then the robber might not be stopped by the first shot, and that might start a gunfight where the clerk could be injured or killed..If the clerk waits until the robber turns and looks at him again, the robber might make an evasive move and start a gunfight with all the risks associated with a gunfight. If the clerk does nothing and the robber is planning to kill the clerk, then waiting too long again puts the clerk in a gunfight where the robber might have an advantage because he's dictating the timing. One point was to teach us about when a threat was imminent and how a threat can remain imminent longer than many people will realize. Another point was to say that there can be cases where the legal answer is clear but the best strategic/tactical answer is not clear. The second time I learned about this scenario was a few years later. I forget where I read of the incident, but I felt the source was reliable. In the incident, a guy I had known in college was killed in this scenario. He was working at a sporting good store (climbing, camping, and hiking, not guns) and a robber did exactly what the police described. The robber took all the money in the cash register, and the guy I knew hadn't resisted at all. The robber walked to the door of the shop, scanned the area outside, and turned and shot the guy I had known. The shot was fatal. I don't know whether they ever caught the robber. Another interesting case happened in the Oklahoma City area in the early 90's. A woman woke up to find a strange guy going through her underwear drawer. She shot him in the back. The district attorney said that no charges would be filed. A strange intruder going through a woman's underwear drawer was considered an imminent threat. On another point of controversy, I recently tried to load a J-frame revolver with a speed loader without looking at the revolver. I have a package of .38 Special snap caps. At no time did I need five seconds to load the revolver without looking. The big challenge was remembering to keep the revolver pointed downwards so that gravity would assist the cartridges going into the chambers. Otherwise, I'd sometimes pull a cartridge back out of the chamber as I moved the speed loader. Keeping the gun pointed downwards is very difficult if practicing from a recliner that is reclined. From an upright position, this technique is pretty easy. I've never been fast at anything. With my health issues, I'm even slower. However, ten or fifteen minutes of practice got me to a point where I wasn't significantly slower not looking as looking. Admittedly, I've loaded revolvers with a speed loader a few times in my life, so I'm not the same as someone who is just starting. I also believe that the ejector rod on my J-frame is too short for me to bend simply by slapping the end of the rod with some force. I just don't think that the bending moment is there.

I didn't think we would go into a full SHTF scenario either, but started over stocking back in January in case it did, based on information from some of the more reliable news sources. I did take the wife out in March to practice with the Glock 19 and we fired off quite a bit of ammo. It was shock to see NO Ammo was available to restock, at reasonable prices, as the lock down was in it's 2nd week or so. Glad we stocked up early. I also started reloading for my 300 Blackout prior to all this. As of this week, it really appears things are getting back to normal again. Thanks for you videos. You do a great job.
