Also extremely heretical. Official church doctrine is that even making an accusation of witchcraft is blasphemous, since the accusation implies belief in sources of power other than the almighty who can make miraculous intervention, IE it low-key implies you're not doing the monotheism thing right. Of course the Catholic cult of the saints makes this gripe a bit of a throwing stones in glass houses sort of deal, but the fact remains that Kramer would have been burned himself instead of the "Witches" he was accusing had The Vatican had its way with him and his line of thinking.

Worth noting an interesting twist to the Kramer story. Official church doctrine of the era was that only god could perform acts on the mortal coil which would resemble magic to the naked eye. What this more or less meant was that witchcraft wasn't heretical, because witchcraft was impossible to begin with, but accusing someone of witchcraft was INSANELY heretical. And thus we see the roots of the very personal nature that a witch hunt seems to take on in media, because witch hunting was an act born in open refusal of direction from higher authority. It isn't the president who's leading the witch hunt, it's the local pastor who, like Kramer, can't stand the stress of a woman with opinions who freely expresses them or simply exists outside the model of womanhood the local quack theologian decided is god mandated. Stuff like this is why mainline branches of american christianity tend to have strict education requirements for new priests, because they're all branched off from a lineage that learned what happens when you let just any country zealot claiming to speak for god take the pulpit.

To go along with the association between music and magic brought up during the I-no section, in the guilty gear universe their system of magic is semi-related to music itself, including a character who's role in the story of Xrd Revelator who's a "tuner" of magic (Kum Haehyun). I-No's magic being aesthetically music themed carries some significance in that way which I think is cool.

One of my favorite characters i ever played in DnD was a Witch (homebrew class, imagine a wizard but nature focused like a druid). He (yes, he, turns out when you have warlock as a class you kinda just have to go with male witches and female warlocks) was this country bumpkin from a coven who was just super sweet and naive. His familiar Hecate was the wiser individual who had to keep him safe. It was a LOT of fun. 9:36 He also was one of tbe major deciding factors for Bowser's win in Death Battle's battle recent Bowser vs Eggman.

I agree that I-no is an interesting character, but I think Nine the Phantom fits the witch motif better. Sure they both use magic, but everyone in Guilty Gear uses magic to some degree so it doesn't feel quite as special whereas Nine is one of only three characters in the entire cast that is capable of using true sorcery. Plus, she's had a profound effect on the world at large. She created Ars Magus which allowed normal humans to be able to perform some variation of magic which not only helped with defeating the Black Beast but also became commonplace in their daily lives. And while she may not be getting into fights with a Nox Nyctores, she did make all of them. Speaking of fights, her fighting style involves attacks that mix together different elements often compared to a witch's brew. And while she doesn't have any familiars...she does have a thing for cats...

@SentaiYamaneko2 күн бұрын
There's definitely some connection; in her death line, Rhajat mentions seeing a desert, and wonders if Corrin will be waiting for her there. Meanwhile, Tharja is recruited in a desert. My theory is alternate universe counterpart, since the Awakening Trio were explicitly brought there from a different world. And she's not the only Fates character like that. There's also Asugi (Gaius) and Caeldori (Cordelia).

Finally......I've been waiting years for this. Seriously, I asked for this list over 8 years ago on Top Ten Video Game Skeletons. Still, better later than never and all these entries are pretty good choices.
@archmageeldran2567Күн бұрын
One thing I like about these videos is that GS takes the time to quantify what he is looking for in these entries especially with magic users which is something that various creators have taken in a variety of directions and have combined various elements from different magic archetypes. Here are just a few of my thoughts on the characters listed here. Witchwood is honestly a great starting point as she feels like the most archetypical witch and just a great base for the future characters on this list. Kamek is a prime example of how magic users have been combined over the years and how switchable the tropes associated with them are because depending on presentation he would feel more like a wizard or a witch depending on the game I feel. With regards to Ultimicia I admit that she feels more like a sorceress rather than a witch just due to her outfit fitting the former quite well and because her vibes to me feel a lot more sorceress that witch. Gruntilda is a nice example of combining witch tropes with a more kitchen sink approach to setting building where it is more about fun creative ideas rather than anything else. Aunt Ethel is a great showcase of the variety of horror settings like Forgotten Realms offers and how they can tell different stories. She is also a great example for this list of job species being creatures defined by being a race of people devoted to a profession. Think Proud Warrior Race characters but more part of their basic biology. I-No and Bayonetta are imo strong examples of modern witches as they are about embracing more modern culture alongside their witchness while properly balancing all those aspects of the character even though I feel like design wise the witch part gets a bit overshadowed. Ranni I think on this list is the one who best embodies the idea of witches breaking the norms of their world. Specifically in this case from a magical sense considering how her plan is by nature very experimental and never been done before. Morrigan is interesting because as far as I understand it she is one of the few on this list where her story is about finding out what she wants to do with her powers and knowledge rather than using those to carry out whatever ambitions she currently has. Melinoe is arguably the biggest example of how witches have evolved over the years and showcases how different that power fantasy is from someone like Zagrius who embodies imo a more male power fantasy.

Here's a fun Christmas story for those of you who are disappointed that this list is coming out in December instead of October. In Italy there's a story about a witch named Befana who fulfills the actions of Santa Claus, the story goes that Befana was cleaning her house when she met the three wise men who wanted directions while heading towards Bethlehem, while she didn't know where the messiah was they asked her to join them on their journey but she said no. However, Befana changed her mind but had no idea where to look, so now she flies over Italy looking for the Lord while also dropping off presents for the children of Italy.

Some honorable mentions: Green Mage (from Everhood): He's basically Sans but as a -wiza,- I mean, a _mage._ He knows a lot about the Cat God and even accepts you killing him because he wants to move onto the next life (this game follows budhism) however, he wants a Final Fight firs and it is glorious. Did I mention that he has an entire D&D campaign as part of his story? Hilda (from Stella Glow): In this game singing was made physically impossible by God, save for a few girls that _she_ chose to represent her on Earth, these girls are called Witches and represent the five Elements (Water, Wind, Earth, Fire and Time). Hilda is the Time Witch. Long story short, she tried to beat God to protect humanity but failed and in the present she decided to create a group called the Harbringers to do one thing only: Crystalize humanity. Her intention? To reduce humanity's number so God wont wake up (if you have seen Gurren Lagann, she might sound a lot like the Spiral King). However, by the second half of the game she has to join forces with the protagonist to defeat God once and for all. By doing this, she also apologizes for all the people she hurt with her missguided but well intended plan. The Witch (from Slay the Princess): She can only be met on a Episode II that comes from an Episode I where you were cruel to the Princess. However, she meets at least two of the three requirements: - Intention: To finally escape the cabin and also, to kill you as well. - Persecution: The player themselves. They are the Witch precissely because you hurt her enough for her to hate your guts. However, interestingly enough, you yourself could also make her met the last requirement... - Coalition: Also the player! If yourepent for hurting her, then you can actually get one of the most beautiful Endings this game has to offer.

There's one thing you forgot to mention with the Bayonetta entry. As a child, she was actually pretty powerful, and we see that in Bayonetta 1. When Luka was put in charge of watching Cereza, he couldn't see the fight going on nearby, but Cereza could. When she realized this, she took off her glasses, enchanted them, and then handed them to Luka so he could see what she saw. For someone who wasn't trained in the arts, she was still able to use magic like it was nothing.

Recently I got into Dnd lore, so I already knew about the hags' method of reproduction, it's both fascinating and horrifying; you could say it's fascifying! Speaking of hags, around this time of year my country, Italy, gets visited by one: the Befana, sometimes known as the Christmas Witch, who on the 6th of January fills stockings with candy for good boys and girls, and with coal and onions for the naughty ones. In certain versions of her lore, the Befana is implied to not be human, but a faerie with a crone-like appearance, and I personally like to imagine her as a hag who rejected the ways of her sisters and tried to do good. She also checks two of the characteristics shown in the countdown: she had the INTENTION of bringing gifts to the newborn king, but since she couldn't find him, she instead built a sense of COALITION with other children by giving them the courtesy.

Just got a few quick clarifications on the Ranni segment, specifically at 36:09 Ranni getting a moon of her own isn't an Empyrian thing and is instead a thing tied back to her heritage as the princess of the Carian noble house. It was explicitly Rennala who facilitated Ranni's meeting with the Dark Moon in a ritual done to mimic her own meeting with the Full Moon that gives Rennala her power over Raya Lucaria. Malenia and Miquella, the other empyrians in Elden Ring, aren't ever associated with the Moon at all aside from their relationships with Radahn. Feels a bit more appropriate for her powers to her sorcerer mother, don't you think?

I honestly was expecting Bayo to be left off the list because of how "un-witch-like" she is at a glance, very pleasant surprise though!

I'm probably one of the few guys who wasnt drawn into Bayonetta by the sex appeal. What drew me in was getting to kick the shit out of dozens of enemies in various over-the-top ways. Thats why Bayonetta Origins, the one title in the series that is completely devoid of sex appeal (for obvious reasons) has a place on my top 10 list. The combat is fun as hell, and Cereza is a cinnamon roll who deserves all of the headpats.

Same here. I played Devil May Cry first and was drawn into that style of fighting, so I eventually gave Bayonetta a try. The sex appeal didn't hurt, though. It just wasn't the main reason.

Here’s hoping next Monster Month that those (traditionally) little green tricksters make the cut!

My ONLY Complaint about this video is the handling on Ranni’s segment, basically forgetting that she also had a coven that had Iji, Selivus, and Blaidd, basically her official familiar

That intro, how long did it take to write? Keeping up the rhyming scheme has definitely got to bite

This is now the second time I accidentally stumbled upon a premiere of a video from this channel. Unexpected but cool non the less.

I'd like to shout out Magilou from Tales of Berseria. Most of the women who spellcast aren't actually witches despite sometimes being called so (hi Rita) but Magilou? Just fkin look at her. Witch hat, dress, familliar, uses guardian spirits to fight with, can absorb magic and was even next in line to become a part of the Abbey's higher ups until she said no and walked away. She's silly, bombastic and I love her, especially her skits where she ropes each character into a magic show.

14:38 Isn't just a reference but it is her name. Ultimecia's japanese name is arutimishia, which would be more accurately translated to Artimesia. It's likely a translation error that caused this as she is known as Artimesia in both German and Italian.

Hey Oscar, I have a Question.... Since you already did something with Monster HUNTERS, I've been trying to decide a good name for a VS battle score of Simon Belmont vs Geralt. Do you have any name ideas?

Not sure if worth a mention. Ellen (The Witches House) Everything horror that has happened was from her, and much is explained in the book "The Diary of Ellen".

About the Kamek/Magikoopa thing: I have a theory - I'm nust sure where it came from - that in reality, there is only one Magikoopa: Kamek. All of those other Magikoopas you see? Those are Kamek too. One of the spells he has shown is the ability to duplicate himself, and that's what I think is going on here. Kamek has duplicated himself so many times, that none of them even know who the original is. The are all Kamek, and they are all the original.

Ranni's lunar connection isn't because of her being Empyrean, her lunar connection comes from her birth mother, as she's royalty from Raya Lucaria, who have lunar connections as opposed to Marika's solar/golden light connections.
