One thing I really like about Opal being a Fairy-type leader is this bit in the Pokemon Special manga. One of the questions asked before the battle is her age. The 'correct' answer is 88, so that's what Sou picked. Opal tells him during their gym battle that yes, he was correct, but the 'correct' answer isn't always the 'right' answer. Typical fae-style trickery and manipulation of words.

I'm surprised Josh didn't mention this, but Ninetails is the only Okami boss that actually attempts to mess with you while you are drawing. For those that don't know the game, this is a MUCH bigger deal than it sounds. Amaterasu is the sun goddess, the protagonist of the game that we never see. That white wolf is just her avatar. When the scroll rolls out and we paint on it to affect the world, that is quite literally the goddess herself, FROM A HIGHER PLANE OF EXISTENCE, painting things to affect the plane of reality below her. The game more or less has a fourth wall within a fourth wall. The innermost layer is the game we all see. Theayer outside of that is where Amaterasu's true form exists that paints things into existence. And then one layer beyond that is us, the real people playing the game. The fact that Ninetails is capable of not only being aware of the scroll being rolled out but also being able to ACTIVELY INTERACT WITH IT is genuinely terrifying. It implies that she is so powerful that she can perceive and interact with a plane of existence heretofor only ever even inhabited by THE highest-planar capital-G God in their reality, and genuinely borders on, if not actually IS, fourth wall awareness and minor manipulation of. If that isn't fae-like phenomenal cosmic power, I don't know what is.

This goes alongside the story buildup with her posing as Rau and tricking you into giving her the Fox Rods before assassinating Himiko, as well as tricking you into potentially killing what seemed to be the only way to reach Oni Island (The Water Dragon). I wouldn't doubt that Ninetails was just reading the script and planning ahead for it

Another point about Opal - she’s looking for a successor, and although the questions during her battle are part of an “interview process”… the player isn’t quite what she’s looking for. Then you escort her to Hammerlocke and come across Bede, one of your rivals, proud of his battling skills to the point of conceit, though still bitter about getting kicked out of the League by his adoptive father. In other words… just “twisted” enough to grab Opal’s attention. You could say Opal… _spirited him away_ after that.

Her home is even in a fairy like forest glimmwood where some of the NPC's say fairy type pokemon like to play prinks on travelers leading them astray there was even an episode in the anime where those gremlin like fairy pokemon spend half an episode pranking Chloe when she went to the glimmwoods

I can't remember if Yoshida or anyone ever explained the naming choice, but from playing Shadowbringers, I've had two theories behind it. 1) The pixies are wholly neutral in that they don't have a gender, using they/them in reference to themselves and other pixies. So using the masculine title of "King" and the name Titania was the devs' way of keeping their leader as such. 2)More based off the area Il Mheg used to be (Voeburt), and just a personal theory, Titania (which just means giant, great one) was the title used by the pixies for their leader. The usage of "King" on top of that could be a result of their living in good terms alongside the Kingdom of Voeburt, or even adopted as a form of remembrance for the kingdom after its fall (it is actually confirmed that the pixies did try to save the citizens from the corruption, though unsuccessful and ultimately turning many into plants to keep them in some way "alive") Again, I'm not sure if either are the actual answer here, but it's been fun to think about why King Titania is named as such

Actually, there is a reason why they call Titania the ‘king’ of the fairies. It has to do with the old King of Voeburt, before it became the fae kingdom thanks to the flood of light. Seeing Titania fight the light warden brought back the imagery of the old King of Voeburt, and in his honour changed the title ‘the Ruler of the Fairies’, to ‘King of the Fairies’. Combine that with the Fae not having a concept of gender and you end up with what we have.

Yeah, soon as they announced X/Y and the new Fairy type, I was already well-versed-enough at the time to have called one of their major weaknesses of Steel thanks to the Celtic myth of the Changelings. As the story goes, you would hang a metal fork over the crib of babes in order to keep fae from spiriting them away to their mound, whereby the child would be raised to become their new queen (which, fun fact, is what the Fairy Queen of Wind Waker being in the visage of a child is in reference to...kinda dark when you start thinking about...things... Things I will ABSOLUTELY not mention on this...let's say "family-friendly" platform...*shudders*... O.o) But yeah, I do love that their strengths, weaknesses, and resistances are all in relation to mythology. :)

I know it won't happen but the Fairy Festival is such a good exploration of the allure and darker nature of Fae You fight a whole group of Fae, though long emaciated between LobCorp and Ruina, they're rather hideous and have grown desperate for sustenance. With no more employees to lure and prey on, they take to each other to survive. Need more Fae? Try the Realization Rematch, where Wingbeat maintains the faster and evasive aspects of fae while turning her Predation into even more of a positive. Not to mention Limbus Company's continuation of the trend with the Faelantern and the Fairy Gentleman

My honorable mentions: Blizzaurus (Super Princess Peach) Maleficent ain't the only fairy that can turn into a dragon. The Chamberlain's Shadow (Fairly Oddparents Shadow Showdown) With all the FOP references in this video, it only feels appropriate to mention a boss from one of the games. Fairy Godmother (Shrek 2 The Game) You fight this two-faced pixie twice in the game, the first time in the potion factory and the second time as the final boss. Hinozall (Yo Kai Watch 2) It's funny to Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino insert himself into the game as a Yokai.

Long story short on Clownpiece. She's the subordinate of Junko, an immortal fox spirit thing. And Hecatia who had such a horrible fashion sense that she became the Queen of hell. Who was juiced up by the former in a war against the moon. Which is its own complicated story involving Yukari manipulating everyone into it. Just to assert her dominance on the moon people who wanted to invade Earth after the Moon landing. Clownpiece stomped the entire Lunar capital singlehandedly and started wearing the American flag as a way to show her supremacy. And to stick it to the Moon people. She then got whupped by Reimu and now leaves as a NEET in the basement of the Hakurei shrine alongside Shinyoumaru and probably Suika.

I LOVE Queen Sectonia's battle themes; the first time I heard "Moonstruck Blossom" I was genuinely moved to tears by the first few notes. And that first phase...woof...a menacing pipe organ after Ganondorf's own heart before blasting in to that bombastic heavy metal chaos that'd set Sonic a-head-banging; literally this theme alone inspired a fight between two characters from a story I'd been working on for over a decade. You wanna hear something funny about Queen Sectonia, btw? Her voice actress is Kirby's. O.O Heh, and yeah, Empress of Light is practically the embodiment of "I'm respawning in 20 seconds, stay alive!" Also, minor aside, The Moon Lord is referred to as being Chthulhu's brother in the official Terraria lore...a bit...weird, then, that you fight his eyes and his brain, but...eh...semantics. X3

A huge Honorable Mention: Green Mage (from Everhood): He's way more than a simple mage. He's a trickster, he's connected to the arcane (as can be seen with all the connections he has to the Cat God) and he does use magic. He even plays D&D with the player! And that last Boss fight with him (aptly named "The Last Fight") is just sublime. He's the only boss to shoot a non-note projectile (in the form of summoning Lightning mid-fight), a feat only very few Rhythm Bosses can boast about.

Just a fun fact for everyone: Remember how Josh explained about the reason why Fairy types are weak to Steel? Well, if you’re wondering why they are weak to Poison…blame Peter Pan. In theatrical versions of Peter Pan, Hook attempts to poison Pan, but Tinkerbell grabs and drinks the poison herself to save him. Leading to…the fourth wall breaking bit where Peter asks the audience to clap to bring her back to life. (Yes…that’s where that trope came from.)

Even before encountering Titania in FF14, you have to obtain a bunch of key items to unlock the seal trapping Titania inside the castle. One of the key items is in the possession of the Fuath, a type of fey that resemble frogs in waistcoats. Even after defeating their leader Aenc Thonh of the Lengthsome Gait, the Fuath take a liking to the player character and deside to make them one of the Fuath. How? By attempting to drown the player character by flushing them into the lake. The only reason it fails is because in the previous expansion Stormblood the player character receives a blessing from a tribe of turtle people called the Kojin that permanently gives the player character the ability to breathe underwater.

Definitely needed that disclaimer at the start because yeah Fae is basically used the same way as demon or yokai to refer to a wide range of very different sorts of supernatural beings, heck some terms you think are specific are even varied like elves, kobolds, gnomes, pixies, trolls, etc...can have a thousand different variations and still count as that. Ghosts and demons though are specifically funny in this context given how some fae in pop culture get depicted as ghosts so often, Banshee and Dullahan especially. And attempts to reconceptualize the fae with changes in culture and religion resulted in some of these changes, (and finding the pre-Christian truth can be hard when we are dealing once again with cultures that had a habit of not writing things down and the ones writing things down being Christian authors centuries after the entire region had already converted), so we end up with stories like Eve hid some of her dirty children from God so God turned them into the Hidden people, or fallen angels, or people that died and weren't evil enough for Hell or good enough for Heaven became fae, which obviously wouldn't be in the pre-Christian sources, and even concepts like Light and Dark elves or the Seelie and Unseelie have distinct Christian influences where otherwise a good and evil split doesn't seem to exist. Heck there is a case of a man sentenced to death for claiming he had sex with a Bergsra *think mountain nymph* because the church declared these neutral nature fae to be succubi. Honestly one could do a whole rant of various religions reconceptualizing the gods and spirits of other religions and beliefs as lesser spirits, demons, and monsters (its usually negative) to incorporate the locals and their beliefs into this faith. In fact the ghost and demons thing even translates to modern ghost hunting, cryptids, and supernatural beliefs, as many "ghosts" would have been labeled as fae in the past. The lady in white, the white gown and long black hair, the lady in the mist would usually be seen as some sort of "elf", or fairies. Poltergeist activity would have been attributed to house brownies and boggarts and such being upset, things going missing was the same, and even seeing apparitions might have been seen as sprites playing tricks (disguising themselves as the dead to scare people), same with all sorts of noises and tapping windows etc...as fae tricks. Even Shadow People would have been seen as Land Wights and Dark Elves. Some of these have the feel of again reconceptualizing something into one's familiar belief system while others it feels like simplifying it all under one umbrella term, which fae basically is as well.

Did the poem actually say that the Jabberwock could ONLY be defeated by decapitation? Curiosity really. The other fae bosses from Bayonetta are also really great, specially Lukaeon and Strider, and even if their version of Jabberwocky didn't get beheaded its still totally awesome. 7:55 Also the Tim Burton's adaptation of Alice in Wonderland is actually really great and very underrated. To me at least, they did managed to adapt in a very creative and fluid way the classic story nto something more "realistic" and dark without losing their book essence, after all fairy tales during the much older days were not that family friendly like they are nowdays. Just saying.

Fun Fact: Clownpiece, due to her torch's power to inflict madness gives her the odd trait of being affected differently by the difficulty level. Basically, if you're on the hardest setting then she's really easy, and if you are on the easiest setting then she becomes really, REALLY hard! Some would even go to claim that Easy mode Clownpiese is one of the hardest bosses in the franchise!

For anyone wondering about thr end of the Clownpiece section… the number 9 is associated with Cirno due to POVF since in its institution guide Cirno was labeled with a number 9… AND THE DIRECT TRANSLATION OF WHAT THE DESCRIPTION FOR THE NINEBALL ICON WAS AND I QUOTE “BAKA(IDIOT)” hence the association between Cirno and the number nine

In Okami, by the third Orochi fight you should have a tier 5 weapon upgraded. It's also the perfect fight to finally use those exorcism scrolls you've forgotten.

Good to see Veran included on here. A villain who gets things done and fights hard even when you hit her with her allergy to Mystery Seeds. Definitely superior to Onox. As with every mythical being it includes, the Megami Tensei series makes the Fae quite deadly, but only one of the Tuatha De was broken enough to seek to slay all the gods and remake the entire universe into a primal state, seeking to return all such beings to the forces of nature they were before humans started antromorphizing them- Dagda. The puppet master behind the protagonist's resurrection as a godslayer from the very beginning of SMT4A. If you don't choose his path he doesn't take it well, crippling you by withdrawing his power from your body while bombarding you with Bless and Curse moves. All you can do is try to hang on until his mother Danu steps in and... creates a brand new less-nihilistic Dagda on the spot to stop you from dying? Yeah, even original Dagda raised an eyebrow at such an action taken by the 'good guys'. No one's hands are clean in these games.

If I recall correctly, the Empress of light in Terraria has been deemed, the single most dangerous boss to fight, worse than the moon lord and worse than the duke (Doom fish). Also that one shot Josh mentioned? It's not because she gets a crazy damage buff, it's literal 1 shot no-protection mechanics. You can ONLY DODGE, NO TANKING. ...and yet people still claim she's too easy, go get the apocalypse mod, and have a smack down with three custom bosses all at the same time, one of which literally force your player character into a limited box to restrict movement.

Honestly, just stay mobile and position yourself well. Empress has a very consistent attack pattern and I've learned it. Moon Lord's a much more chaotic fight that, on average, is more challenging to me.
